While cleaning out their late mother's California loft last Christmas, three brothers made a life-changing discovery under a pile of faded newspapers: one of the first Superman comics ever made.

An original copy of the June 1939 first edition on the Man of Steel's adventures, it was in a remarkably pristine condition.

Now it has become the highest-priced comic book ever sold, fetching $9.12m (£7m) at auction.

Texas-based Heritage Auctions, which hosted Thursday's sale, called it the "pinnacle of comic collecting".

The brothers found six comic books, including Superman #1, in the loft underneath a stack of newspapers inside a cardboard box and surrounded by cobwebs in 2024, Heritage said.

They waited a few months before contacting the auction house, but once they did, Heritage Auctions vice-president Lon Allen visited them in San Francisco within days, according to the auction house.

The brothers, who have chosen to withhold their names, are "in their 50s and 60s, and their mom had always told them she had an expensive comics collection but never showed them", Mr Allen said.

"It's a twist on the old 'Mom threw away my comics' story."

Their mother had held onto the comic books since she and her brother bought them between the Great Depression and the beginning of World War Two, Heritage said.

Mr Allen added that the cool northern California climate was perfect for preserving old paper.

"If it had been in an attic here in Texas, it would have been ruined," he said.

That helped CGC, a large third-party comics grading service, give this copy of Superman #1 a 9.0 rating on a 10-point scale, topping the previous record of 8.5.

And at its sale price of over $9m, including buyer's premium, Superman #1 easily beat the previous highest-priced comic book ever sold by $3m.

Action Comics No. 1, the 1938 work that first introduced Superman, sold for $6m last year.

The youngest brother said in a press release by the auction house that the box had remained forgotten in the back of attic.

"As the years unfolded, life brought about a series of losses and changes," he said. "The demands of everyday survival took centre stage, and the box of comics, once set aside with care and intention, was forgotten. Until last Christmas."

He added: "This isn't simply a story about old paper and ink. This was never just about a collectible.

"This is a testament to memory, family and the unexpected ways the past finds its way back to us."

November 26, 1864: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (pen name Lewis Carroll), presented Alice Liddell with the story of Alice's Adventures Under Ground that she had inspired with illustrations by Carroll, dedicating it as "A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer's Day". The published version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is about twice the length of Alice's Adventures Under Ground and includes episodes, such as the Mad Hatter's Tea-Party that do not appear in the manuscript.

If you're wondering what happened to Con Air plane used for in-flight scenes in the movie, it crashed into Mount Healy, in Denali National Park, killing all three flight crew on Aug 1, 2010. The Jailbird C-123 used during the filming of the taxi scenes is now on display at Wendover Airfield which was also used to film the scenes of Lerner Airfield.

He was also accused of being the mastermind for the bombing of Cubana Flight 455, a Cuban civilian airliner, on October 6, 1976 in which all 73 people on board were killed.

"Rear Adm William F. Raborn, director of the fleet ballistic missiles program said today the Navy has solved all the basic problems in the development of what is believed to be the world's first solid propellant IRBM, the ship-based Polaris."


Raborn resigned from the CIA on June 30, 1966, having served for only fourteen months as DCI and touted as a total failure. I live almost exactly on the 37th parallel. I mean, I could spit off my porch and hit it dead square in the middle. It's this huge black line running from horizon to horizon, east to west. So, being that close to the 37th, nowhere near the 38th, my car battery ought to be ok, shouldn't it?

Still not buying no 'lectric cars, though. I've never figured out what to do with all the time I'd be wasting every time I wanted to fill the tank back up. Gasoline takes a couple minutes, but that 'lectricity, that takes hours! I don't relish the notion of making a 6 hour trip to see the grand kids into a day-and-a-half long affair each way, just in travel time, y'know? I don't know if I even have a picnic basket big enough to pack the sammiches for such a trip!

It's bad enough that my car booster has a li-ion battery in it. Every time I have to boost a car, I have to leave it plugged up overnight to get a charge back on it. I can't imagine trying to rely on that technology to power the whole damned car!

It was a tourist hotspot in the 1940s and the 1950s to improve Santa Claus, which received publicity through the writings of American novelist and famed science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein and U.S. pioneer restaurant rater Duncan Hines. Characterized in 1988 as "a little roadside place on the west shoulder of U.S. Route 93."

Back in 1988 you could of bought the whole town for $52,500. In 1995 Santa Claus became a ghost town. The remaining structures in the abandoned town were torn down sometime in early 2022. All that remains is rattlesnakes and dust in the wind.

"Time is slowing down" is an often made observation that the pace of cultural change is less rapid in the 21st Century than it was in the latter part of the 20th Century. Fashion, music, design, architecture etc are seen as less volatile, contain less novelty, than before.

It's a hindsight experience in some ways: you probably had a landline in 1994, read magazines, watched analog TV, commuted daily to work and listened to the RADIO. People smoked indoors. People bought newspapers and read books on the train. Time is still changing, just the medium you see it in has changed.


That's why (I'm guessing) it's hard to talk about 21st Century pulp. It doesn't quite have the shock or the strangeness of the old. The past doesn't feel like an undiscovered country there, even though we are a quarter of the way through the current century. We may need a new word for our more recent digital nostalgia, something that captures the oddness of times past, the way pulp was a shorthand for mass market printing and the types of entertainment that found a home there.



One simple word I can think of is "gizmo." Jean Baudrillard's work uses it to refer to everyday, functional technological objects that in a consumer society become signs of status, style or coolness rather than just tools. His concept of simulation, where signs and copies replace the real (ex. hyperreality), shows how these gizmos, media, and digital trends create a world where the representation becomes the reality, famously inspiring The Matrix.

Although there's always been gizmos, the idea of a 'gizmo lifestyle' picked up pace once the World Wide Web developed and expanded: the internet became a thing you 'did' rather than a tool you used or a place you visited. It was a lifestyle choice and a cultural signal. Those days are long gone - perhaps LLMs are the new gizmo lifestyle for a few, but it may take a little longer for it to gather the heady aroma of nostalgia that pulp seems to have.

I've noticed many Youtube comments are the island of lost souls sifting the debris field of a dead culture.
