It's National Camera Day. This Navy photographer on USS Bunker Hill (CV-17), has an impressive rig as he prepares for a reconnaissance mission in a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver in 1944. He can shoot with the massive aerial camera or with the Helldiver's rear twin .30 caliber machine guns. Chief Petty Officer Hitchcock used this one over Germany in 1944.
June 29, 1927: For the first time in 200 years, a total eclipse of the sun was seen in Britain. Few people were lucky enough to witness the spectacle, but those in Giggleswick in Yorkshire were able to see a perfect, full eclipse, which lasted for less than 30 seconds. June 29, 1956: Marilyn Monroe married the esteemed US playright, Arthur Miller, in a 4-minute civil ceremony in Westchester County Court House in White Plains, New York State. The bride was 30 and the groom 40. The marriage lasted until 20 January 1961, when John F. Kennedy was sworn in Office as 35th president. No coincidence. June 29, 1967: Hollywood star Jayne Mansfield (aged 34), was killed in a car accident at 2:25AM on her way to New Orleans, Louisiana. Her boyfriend/attorney Sam Brody and Ronnie Harrison were killed as well. Jayne's three children, Mickey Hargitay, Zoltan Hargitay and Mariska Hargitay survived the crash. Contrary to media reports that Mansfield was decapitated are untrue, although she did suffer severe (scalping) head trauma. Hollywood's "smartest dumb blonde" was allegedly intimately involved with numerous men, including Robert and John F. Kennedy, her attorney Samuel S. Brody, and Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli. In America the barriers on the back of all tractor-trailers today are known as Mansfield bars...a safety feature fitted to trucks & lorries after her accident which took the trucking industry years of gov't litigation before finally implementing through years of trial & failure. The crashed car was saved by a private collector in Florida, where it became a roadside attraction in the 1970s, then was on display by the Dearly Departed Tours & Artifact Museum in LA until the COVID-19 pandemic, when it went into storage, and was never seen again. However, you can get a virtual tour. If interested see this Dearly Departed Tours history vid which has a re-enactment of the fatal crash scenario: Homeless in Texas... June 30, 1894: London’s Tower Bridge was officially opened to traffic. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and has become a world-famous feature of the London skyline.
June 30, 1937: The world’s first emergency telephone service “999” was introduced in London. It allowed a caller to contact the emergency services for urgent assistance. All 999 calls are always free. The system was introduced following a house fire in Wimpole Street on 10 November 1935, in which five women were killed. A neighbour had tried to telephone the fire brigade and was so outraged at being held in a queue by the Welbeck telephone exchange that he wrote a letter to the editor of The Times, which prompted a government inquiry. 999: can somebody help? "What Price Bikini?" editorial cartoon by Bruce Russell (1903-1963) published June 30, 1946. June 30, 1946: the goddess "Gilda" went atomic. The world's greatest potential for large-scale destruction has been dubbed 'GILDA,' after the recent movie by Hollywood star Rita Hayworth." - Radio announcer, June 30, 1946. The first test was Able. The bomb was named Gilda after Rita Hayworth's character in the 1946 film Gilda, and was dropped from the B-29 Superfortress Dave's Dream of the 509th Bombardment Group on June 30, 1946 (July 1st in the states). It detonated 520 feet above the target fleet and caused less than the expected amount of ship damage because it missed its aim point by 2,130 feet. In late June of 1946, media hype over the first post-World War II test of an atomic weapon was hitting a fever pitch. News of the imminent Operation Crossroads detonation of the "Gilda" bomb at Bikini Atoll on June 30, 1946 (U.S. time zone) screamed from headlines and blared from radio broadcasts. There was even a (true) story about atomic scientists pasting a pinup photo of screen star Rita Hayworth on the weapon they had named after her hit film. Two weeks after the Able shot: "Extra Added! June 30, 1997: Britain handed Hong Kong back to China when the 99 year lease agreed with China expired at midnight. The lavish ceremony on July 1st 1997 was attended by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Prince Charles and the Chinese President Jiang Zemin. Luckily I got to visit Hong Kong 3 times before this happened. First time I was shocked by how many British girls were living there and all the British pubs/night clubs. I was naive back then, just did not know. Exactly one minute before midnight the Flag of the United Kingdom and the flag of British Hong Kong were slowly lowered to the British national anthem "God Save the Queen", symbolizing the end of British colonial rule in Hong Kong as very final and last time. A hiatus of exactly twelve seconds occurred between the British and the Chinese anthems due to a timing misunderstanding. The missing ten seconds during the Hong Kong handover Congratulations to James Donovan who was presented with the Arctic Star on his 105th birthday last week. Donovan is one of the last men to see Bismarck in action. He was serving aboard HMS King George V when the Royal Navy hunted down the dreaded German battleship in 1941. June 29, 1974: in music history, "Sundown" rises to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song will remain at the top spot for one week and would become Gordon Lightfoot's best-selling single. It is about infidelity, but Sundown is not the woman, but the other man who is pursuing her!
LA City Council saves Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home from demolition Troubling updates about the "saved" Marilyn Monroe house: in an exclusive with gossip blog TMZ, “sources close to” property owners Milstein-Bank say they “feel violated by the ruling and don't want to be forced to sell,” intend to fight the designation in court, and allege the property has a leaky roof which the owners do not intend to repair, as “the new designation makes it very complicated.” However, doing structural work that does not change a landmark’s appearance is not complicated: one need only apply for a standard LADBS permit and Office of Historic Resources will sign off. Not repairing a leaking roof would, in effect, lead to demolition by neglect. July 1, 1908: SOS was adopted as the international distress signal. In Morse code, SOS, is signified by 3 dots, 3 dashes, then 3 dots (· · · – – – · · ·). SOS was chosen because it could not be misinterpreted as being a message for anything else.
I don't know when/who started it, but when I was in the Navy, "SOS" stood for "Shit On a Shingle", military slang for chipped beef on toast. It sucked, I hated it, we all did. I always opted for peanut butter & jam sandwiches. July 1, 1914: the ships of the U.S. Navy officially became DRY under General Order No. 99 signed by Secretary of the Nay Josephus Daniels. Most ships spent the previous night having parties and mock funerals. British, French, German, and Dutch sailors rushed to any nearby American ship to help consume the last of the booze. July 1, 1989: Cher began shooting the video for "If I Could Turn Back Time" on board USS Missouri (BB-63). The Navy's hopes of using it as a recruiting tool were dashed when Cher changed into a revealing leather strap outfit that caused the video to be banned by several TV networks and the Navy admirals decided no more thinly dressed celebrities onboard warships. Well, with their recruitment quotas at a historical low, maybe they should rethink that idea. Today is Indiana Jones Day! The Indiana Jones franchise began when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg met to discuss making a movie based on the classic adventure serial DON WINSLOW OF THE NAVY. Lucas wanted to make a B movie modeled on those serials and conceived The Adventures of Indiana Smith, featuring a daring archaeologist named after his Alaskan Malamute dog. Spielberg hated the name Indiana Smith. Lucas shelved the Indiana Smith project to focus on creating his own space opera, Star Wars (1977). Lucas and Spielberg ultimately decided to create the original character of Indy. Don Winslow of the Navy is a 1942 Universal Pictures Serial film based on the comic strip Don Winslow of the Navy by Commander Frank V. Martinek. It was theatrically released in January 1942. IMDB | The 4 hour film is on Youtube. Don Winslow of the Navy (comic strip) was an American comic strip created by Frank Victor Martinek and was distributed mostly by the Bell Syndicate from 1934 to 1955. The title character was a spy-chasing lieutenant commander in Naval intelligence. The comic strip led to a radio adventure serial that began in 1937, as well as film serials that began in 1942. Original comic book stories also appeared in Fawcett Comics titles starting in 1943. Although created primarily as a Navy recruitment and propaganda tool, the strip received high marks from Coulton Waugh for “excellent suspense, and ingenious, spine-joggling situations.” Ron Goulart credits Don Winslow with "intrigue, spychasing, beautiful women, and villains with names like Dr. Centaur, the Dwarf, and the Scorpion." Maybe the Navy should resurrect this comic as a recruitment tool! Prince & Princesses of the Holy Roman Empire During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the thirteen colonies from Great Britain in 1776 actually occurred on July 2, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain's rule. July 2 was the day the Declaration was adopted but the 4th was the day it was published and first signatures were attached to it. John Adams thought July 2 would be marked as a national holiday for generations to come. The late historian Pauline Maier also said that arguments over the how to celebrate the Declaration arose between the Federalists (of John Adams) and the Republicans (of Thomas Jefferson) and that the Declaration and its anniversary day weren’t widely celebrated until the Federalists faded away from the political scene after 1812. Jefferson and Adams both passed away two days later, on the Fourth of July, 1826. The word Latin word compos (perhaps derived from the adjective indeclinable potis, 'capable', 'he who can') is generally used with the genitive of that which the subject is in possession of: the mind (mentis), the soul (animi), the self (sui). In today's speech, and especially in the field of law, the expression is used with the negation 'non compos mentis' to indicate a person who is insane or who is in defect of his full mental capacities and, therefore, cannot be held responsible for his actions. Happy 4th!
July 3, 1982, HMS Conqueror arrived in Scotland while flying a Jolly Roger to signify the sub's successful operations during the Falklands War. In the new documentary "THE CONQUEROR: HOLLYWOOD FALLOUT," Utah resident Mary Dickson shares some gems from the A.E.C. prepared book "Atomic Tests in Nevada" (Government Publishing Office, 1955). I was walking around these parts in 2016-17, barefoot. I'm sure they cleaned it all up by then, right?! A former FEMA director Louis O. Giuffrida introduces a pre-broadcast screening of ABC's THE DAY AFTER to FEMA staff on Nov 14, 1983. In 1970 while at the US Army War College, Giuffrida wrote a thesis (PDF) titled "National Survival—Racial Imperative", outlining a military contingency plan for the forcible relocation of some 500,000 black militant Americans to concentration camps in the event of a national emergency involving racial strife. Though debatable as the thesis states it would take 14 years to relocate them forcibly and appears to question if this is even realistic given the history of Japanese internment camps. His thesis became available after a journo filed a FOIA in 2014. He resigned as FEMA director following a congressional fraud investigation. Several years after leaving FEMA, Louis O. Giuffrida consulted on security matters for Lyndon LaRouche's defense team in his mail fraud trial. Proponents have cited a contingency plan (Rex 84) drafted in part by U.S. Marine Colonel Oliver North calling for the suspension of the Constitution and the detainment of citizens in the event of a national crisis. This was aimed at left-wing activists, not the libertarians and right-wingers generally associated with FEMA theories. This has been linked to a 1970 document by Louis Giuffrida. Project 908 saw FBI agents, working effectively undercover for FEMA, detailing large warehouses, automobile facilities, Masonic temples, Elks lodges, casinos, camp sites, Coca-Cola bottling plants, Indian bingo halls, country inns, furniture stores, and other potential relocation facilities. In Arkansas, agents lined up a meeting with Walmart executives to discuss using the company’s huge stores for Project 908, explaining as a cover that they wanted to learn crisis management techniques from companies that had large centralized leadership. In May 1983 under National Security Directive 95 (signed by Reagan), Giuffrida & others established another 'Crisis' management project called "MEDUSA". CRISIS INFORMATION AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CIMS) : PROJECT MEDUSA (PDF) 1984 correspondence between Louis O. Giuffrida & CIA deputy dir John N. McMahon: (note Project MEDUSA): Archive.org (FEMA Dir Giuffrida's letter to CIA attached at link about a secure vault constructed for ALL intelligence, but need secure computer terminals within the vault...he recommends a SAFE IBM system) In another project under same name, "MEDUSA" (Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio) is a portable directed-energy non-lethal weapon designed by WaveBand Corporation in 2003-2004 for temporary personnel incapacitation. i.e. Crowd Control. In 2005, Sierra Nevada Corporation acquired WaveBand Corporation. The weapon is based on the microwave auditory effect resulting in a strong sound sensation in the human head when it is subject to certain kinds of pulsed/modulated microwave radiation...according to the Navy — SBIR/STTR Search Database. SBIR = Small Business Innovation Research STTR = Small Business Technology Transfer The project received a positive initial evaluation from the US Navy. However, Sierra Nevada Corporation had discontinued (we are told) the project as of 2008, "possibly because it may have been shown to permanently damage human brain tissue". Hmmm, Havana Syndrome, anyone? CIA black magicians also covered in "Military Neuroscience and the Coming Age of Neurowarfare” (2017) by Armin Krishnan, citing Gordon Thomas book "Journey Into Madness: The True Story of Secret CIA Mind Control and Medical Abuse” (1989) BTW, Sierra Nevada Corporation is of at this moment building the new NextGen National Airborne Operations Centers (NAOC) aka Doomsday plane. Though not expected to be delivered until July 2036. So, the 50 year-old EMP hardened Boeing E-4B "Nightwatch" Doomsday plane will just have to make do. Here's a nice quote from Paul Linebarger, the father of modern psychological warfare: Psychological Warfare By Paul M. A. Linebarger (1948). Linebarger studied both Allied and Axis propaganda efforts and concluded that the British were superior, because they disguised their propaganda as news. Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger (July 11, 1913 – August 6, 1966), better known by his pen-name Cordwainer Smith, was an American author known for his science fiction works. Linebarger was a US Army officer, a noted East Asia scholar, and an expert in psychological warfare. Although his career as a writer was shortened by his death at the age of 53, he is considered one of science fiction's more talented and influential authors. July 5, 1943: USS Strong (DD-467) was sunk by Japanese destroyer Niizuki, from a distance of 13 miles and is believed to be the longest-range torpedo kill in history. LT Hugh Miller (Jan 10, 1910 – June 21, 1978) washed up on Arundel Island, a Japanese-held island. Though wounded, alone, and without a rifle, he launched a 39 day-long guerrilla campaign using grenades he found on a dead soldier. He eliminated enemy patrols and several machine gun nests before being rescued. Although he was put forward for the Medal of Honor on two occasions, it remained elusive. He received the Navy Cross bestowed on him by Eleanor Roosevelt for his Rambo style actions plus 2 Silver Stars, 6 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, and an additional 27 distinct individual and unit awards. Hugh B. Miller – Left For Dead In The Pacific Lt. "Rose Bowl" Miller Graduates from Gridiron Glory to WWII Legend July 5, 1946: National Bikini Day! Or Atomic French Bikini's for Peace! French engineer Louis Réard introduced the modern bikini, modeled by 18-year-old Micheline Bernardini, wearing the first bikini with a newspaper-print design in Paris 1946, while displaying a matchbox capable of holding the entire outfit. It was assumed that public reaction would be similarly explosive. None of Paris's fashion models would wear Réard's creation, so he hired Bernardini, a nude dancer from the Casino de Paris. The Paris fashion press suggests that the bikini gets its name because it looked as if its wearer is emerging in tatters from a nuclear bomb blast, wearing what little is left over. Or perhaps the combination of half-naked south sea islanders coupled with the atomic impact strikes a chord in the haute couture, and reminds them that atom bombs reduce everybody to primitive costume. Réard simply states, "Bikini--smaller than the smallest bathing suit in the world." Named for the famous Bikini atom bomb "Able" test of four days earlier. Bernardini posed at age 58 in a bikini for photographer Peter Turnley, in 1986. She's still alive today at age 96. Nicki Giles, in The Marilyn Album, Gallery Books, New York, 1991, attributes the two B&W photographs to Bruno Bernard from July 19, 1946; this session was a test to advertise first-aid products. The June 1946 issue of Laff Magazine featured a very early photo of Marilyn Monroe in a modest bikini... While most people associate the bikini, in all its forms, as a contemporary piece of fashion, surprisingly, there exist close analogs to the bikini that date as far back as 5600 BC in what is known as the Copper Age when human civilization began to first settle into large cities. A period that predates Ancient Mesopotamian cultures, Ancient Egypt, and other early recorded histories by several thousand years. Afternoon Tea (1912) by Charles Bittinger (American, 1879–1970). Joint Task Force One Dollar bills, front and back; Bikini & Kwajalein: A "Short Snorter" issued by USS Mount McKinley (AGC-7), the control ship for Army/Navy Joint Task Force one (JTF-1), Operation Crossroads in 1946. There were 90 ships which participated in the atom bomb test. The Operation Crossroads Short Snorters were part of Joint Operations Task Force One in which 37,000 sailors and 5,000 airmen participated in "watching" the world's 4th and 5th. nuclear explosions at Bikini Atoll on July 1, 1946 and July 25, 1946. A short snorter is a banknote which was signed by various persons traveling together or meeting up at different events and records who was met. The tradition was started by bush pilots in Alaska in the 1920's and subsequently spread through the growth of military and commercial aviation. If you signed a short snorter and that person could not produce it upon request, they owed you a dollar or a drink (a “short snort”, aviation and alcohol do not mix!). According to the company’s Spam Museum, Ken Digneau, the brother of a Hormel executive, came up with the name — a portmanteau word for “spiced ham” — in a naming contest and got $100 as a reward. The new product was introduced on this day. Austin, Minnesota is "Spamtown, USA". Quote:To keep up Spam sales postwar, the company hired singers to tout the product, and even had a radio show Music With the Hormel Girls. Whatever the reason, it worked: Hormel produced its billionth can in 1959, amid rising sales. And yet the Spam-eating Vikings in the 1970s Monty Python’s Flying Circus skit is the pop culture Spam reference most people will remember. Music with the Hormel Girls Have a listen... Quote:Jay C. Hormel was the SPAM Man. Head of Hormel Foods, he was the canny heir to his father’s canned-meat business. Under him, the company introduced the smooth, spiced pork product known as SPAM right on the cusp of the Second World War. But there was a problem. By wartime’s end, 90 percent of Hormel’s inventory was shipped overseas, as food for American troops and allies. The company now needed to market wartime, tinned food to a peacetime audience. SPAM is extremely popular in Hawaii. It's literally everywhere and mixed in just about every dish you can imagine. WHY? Post WWII the US Gov placed sanctions on Hawaiian residents, restricting the deep-sea fishing industries that were mainly run by Japanese-Americans. Because islanders were no longer allowed to fish, one of the important sources of protein for the islands vanished. So, Spam along with other canned luncheon meats and sardines took its place and apparently still going strong. Had it a few times as a kid and ate it once in Hawaii, never again. July 4, 1986: 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Howard Foote Jr., a Marine aviation mechanic at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro, Calif stole an A-4M Skyhawk, an $18 million military jet, for a 45 minute joyride during which time he performed several impressive aerobatic maneuvers. He had wanted to be a fighter pilot but an injury prevented him from qualifying. He then landed it after making five passes of the runway. His stunt cost him over four months in the brig and an other-than-honorable discharge.
Before entering the Marines in 1984, Foote was a record-holding glider pilot as a teen-ager. His soaring continued in the corps until February, 1986, when he suffered an aerial embolism, a form of the bends, while attempting to set an altitude record. A Marine that deserves to be remembered. Foote tried to fly for Israel and Honduras after his discharge. He later qualified as a test pilot in more than 20 different military and civilian aircraft, and became a contractor to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He holds patents in aviation design and engineering technology. The following video by The History Guy tells Foote’s story. Elon loves to influence that algo...LOL On a more serious note back 3-4 years ago when all this mocking the president when into high pitch fever (which the whole world sees) is actually being driven by big corporate special interests to convince the public that a president is not required anymore. ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.
’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
The adjective "abderian" describes excessive laughter. The word alludes to Democritus, "the laughing philosopher," who was a native of Abdera. He was among the first to develop the atomic theory of the universe. I liked this guy until I found out his nickname came from his hobby of publicly mocking people. Pre-Socratic philosopher Democritus, known as the Laughing Philosopher (presumably because he laughed at man's foolishness) was from Abdera. He is considered by some to be the father of modern science because he, along with his teacher Leucippus, developed an atomic theory of matter that was, as they say, way ahead of its time. Pfew, another hot day in paradise...
July 7, 1908: Ensign Chester Nimitz ran the destroyer USS Decatur (DD-5) aground in the Philippines. He was court-martialed, found guilty of neglect of duty and issued a letter of reprimand. It was a different era, so he was still able to make fleet admiral despite the incident. Blackout, mascot of a Coast Guard-manned landing craft during World War II, shown here wearing his life jacket, participated in the Sicily, Italy, and Normandy invasions. "Blackout" Has Hit Three European Invasion Beaches Even during war time, US Sailors had more fun in taking a break and swim off an Aircraft Carrier in 1943. They use the torpedo nets to block off sharks. For those who don’t know what torpedo nets look like, this is it... Torpedo nets are physical barriers, often made of metal or strong netting, designed to protect ships from torpedo attacks. They are suspended around the hull of a ship and serve as a defense by intercepting and entangling incoming torpedoes before they can hit the ship's hull. July 7, 1947: An alien spaceship supposedly crashed near Roswell, New Mexico. It became known as "The Roswell incident". Space scientists reject the idea it really was an alien craft, but many UFO believers still think otherwise. “See Something, Say Something” It's really amazing how much of this lore and phenomenon is entwined & interlocked in American life which is connected directly to Germany. Planes, weapons, saucers to rockets, space, Mars, politics, fascism, right & left wing tribes, medical field, science, mathematics, "academia", military intelligence, CIA, religion, cults, conspiracy lore to make a life long carrer from, mysticism even more, domination, you name it, you can trace it back to Prussian Germany. Now that is a conspiracy to chew on. Best conspiracy since sliced bread? I wonder why that is. [sarc] July 7, 1928: Sliced bread was sold for the first time by the Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri. Every major innovation since has been called "the best thing since sliced bread." Get a load of that marketing verbiage..."Kleen Maid Bread" versus, "Clean Made Bread"! You might be thinking, but does "sliced bread" also have a connection to German descent?? You bet yer toasted cheeks it does. Meet Otto Frederick Rohwedder, (1880-1960), "Father of Sliced Bread"... 7/7 date is just a coincidence, lol. Never heard of him? Well, you can toast his invention (also literally and figuratively!) and celebrate sliced bread. Bread, of course, has been ubiquitous at meal times for millennia, and the fourth Earl of Sandwich had the bread-and-filling lunchtime meal named after him by 1762, but the world would have to wait until the twentieth century for the convenience of pre-sliced bread. Cutting Edge Rohwedder, was an American inventor, engineer, and businessman who developed the first commercial automatic bread-slicing machine. His father, Claus Rohwedder was born on March 17, 1845 at Von-der-Geest, Germany, where he completed his education, and arrived in Davenport, Iowa in 1866. A jeweler by trade, first developed the idea in 1912 and had a prototype by 1916. The invention was not without setbacks, however. A fire destroyed his model and the blueprints for the slicer, along with the factory that was going to produce the machines, in 1917. Unwilling to leave his idea half-baked, Rohwedder started from scratch. It would be ten years before he had enough dough to try again, but by November 1928, he had a patent (1867377) for the new slicer. The next problem was persuading bakers to try out his invention. They believed that sliced bread would dry out faster than the whole loaf and that people wouldn’t want to buy pre-sliced loaves. Undeterred, Rohwedder figured out a way to wrap the bread to prevent rapid drying (and to keep the sliced loaf together), and he finally convinced a baker friend, M. Frank Bench, owner of the Chillicothe Baking Company in Chillicothe, Missouri, to try the machine. The first loaf of sliced Kleen Maid Bread hit the shelf on July 7, 1928. By 1933, around 80% of bread sold in the US was pre-sliced, leading to the popular idiom "greatest thing since sliced bread". Any Way You Slice It "Television is the greatest invention since sliced bread." — Red Skelton in 1951. Meet the American who invented sliced bread: Otto Rohwedder, hard-luck hawkeye "Where Sliced Bread Came From" A short video documentary with rare eyewitness testimony of people who were alive when it happened. Make sure you have two slices today with wine to cleanse all your problems away. Remembering that time when America Banned Sliced Bread. Wut?! Yes. The year was 1943, and Americans were in crisis. Across the Atlantic, war with Germany was raging. On the home front, homemakers were facing a very different sort of challenge: a nationwide ban on sliced bread. “To U.S. housewives it was almost as bad as gas rationing—and a whale of a lot more trouble,” announced Time magazine on February 1, 1943. So by January 18, 1943, when Claude R. Wickard, the secretary of agriculture and head of the War Foods Administration, declared the selling of sliced bread illegal, patience was already running thin. Since sliced bread required thicker wrapping to stay fresh, Wickard reasoned that the move would save wax paper, not to mention tons of alloyed steel used to make bread-slicing machines. By March 8, the government decided to abandon the wildly unpopular measure. “Housewives who have risked thumbs and tempers slicing bread at home for nearly two months will find sliced loaves back on the grocery store shelves tomorrow in most places,” noted the Associated Press. Wickard refused to acknowledge the ire of both housewives and bakers, saying simply that the savings were less than anticipated and that it turned out there was enough wax paper to go around after all.

During the Battle of Calabria, a 15-inch projectile from Warspite hit the Italian battleship Giulio Cesare from a distance of almost 15 miles. Impressive!
