If Trump is indicted over Mar-a-Lago shenagians, he won't be the first presidential candidate to be prosecuted by DOJ. As Adam Hochshild, author of American Midnight: The Great War, a Violent Peace, and Democracy's Forgotten Crisis details on Skullduggery Podcast. That distinction belongs to Eugene Victor "Gene" Debs, 5 time Socialist Party candidate, who was charged, convicted and imprisoned for violating the Espionage Act due to his opposition to World War I. Debs was among the high-profile targets of one of the most ferocious episodes of repression in U.S. history orchestrated by the administration of Woodrow Wilson, with starring roles played by a young J. Edgar Hoover and the U.S. Supreme Court, including of all people, Oliver Wendall Holmes, who wrote the opinion (Schenk v US) upholding the constitutionality of the Espionage Act (before later changing his mind.) But there are a few surprising heroes to the story most notably, a Labor Department official, Louis Post, who challenged Hoover's attempts to deport "radical" immigrants. In another surprise twist, Hochschild discusses the president who commuted (not pardoned) Debs' prison sentence.
