Situation in Europe right now! (June 2023) - Infolurker - 06-10-2023

Oh they are getting real frisky Europe. The German dream is gone.

No houses for you... unless you are the elite.

Illegalizing the building of single family houses. Go live in multi-tenant apartment peasants... Get in your chicken cages.

The bulk of Germany's population has lived in apartment buildings since the industrial revolution, or then-abouts.

Single family homes, while by no means uncommon, are much less common than in the USA.  And new construction of such houses is expensive with the land they sit on being very expensive.

The German real estate clique has gamed the situation for years, and produced stunningly high property prices and rents in popular areas to live (meaning areas with lots of jobs).*

Typical German family house is a 1950s-1960s structure.  Most were designed such that entire floors could function as apartments and were rented out to pay the mortgage on the house.  Typically, houses are passed on to the next generation because the costs of building a house new are formidable.

The latest sting, on existing homeowners, is to force them to conduct expensive upgrades on the house (replacement of all windows with new, "greener" models, etc.) if they wish to sell their homes.

Typical German who lived in their own houses tended to detach from societal turmoil.  They had it made and that was all that mattered to them.  But now, the leftism in Germany is becoming much more aggressive and going after the homeowners.  That will lead to repercussions.

* - there is a flip side to this; in areas with little employment (rural areas of east Germany for example), property prices are much lower ... but people are fleeing from those areas vice going there.

Cheers

Getting to a point where normal folks haf'ta declare their Sovereignty.

Germany (though I believe what Cav just said) doesn't have enough land to go around from what I could see when I was there. They use the land very efficiently. I certainly didn't see any that was going to waste.

It is not so much that Germany doesn't have the land, it is a consequence of how the land is managed.

Private individuals don't own forest land in Germany -- all state property.  Zoning, until recently, tended to keep the use of land the same -- forests, agricultural, urban etc.  This policy kept urban sprawl to a minimum, but also meant that new land tracts for houses were uncommon.

The houses built in Germany are usually three stories.  If a story is not rented out, it is used by one generation of the family.  As a generation aged, they would move a floor up.  Thus, there could be three generations of a family (old, middle aged, young with children) living in the same house.  It sounds like happy, solid families ... but the details of how ownership get transferred are ugly (as in formal contracts being signed that specify what the gaining family will do for their parents in exchange for ownership of the house).

But the recent trend is an attack on house owners in the name of "saving the environment".  The apartment dwellers have been treated as a lower class forever; those people are used to their lot now.  The house owners are now getting pressure from radicalized bureaucrats.  The squeeze play is working its way up the social ladder.

Cheers
