I learned a lot about myself during that time.
I learned that I did not need to go along to get along. That family and community, when strong and committed, is all I need.
I learned that I had too many “things”, and that they were only of value to me. And that the memory has more value than the thing.
I also learned that I had a darn good immune system, which allowed me to care for the sick without fear.
I also learned that I liked the company of a lot of folk that were classified as scum. In fact I grew fond of being a member of the scum group.

The Authoritartian Left very much wants us to forget all about those dark days... and that is the exact reason we should NOT forget about them. If we can be nade to forget, then they can rewrite history and make themselves look better than they were. But I was there. I KNOW better.
As the Jews say of the holocaust, "Never Forget".
