ARkStorm (for Atmospheric River 1,000) shows geologic evidence indicating that other "megafloods" occurred in the California region in the following years: 212, 440, 603, 1029, c. 1300, 1418, 1605, 1750, 1810, and, most recently, 1861–62. Scientists believe the California flood of 1605 to be the worst flood in the region in the past 2,000 years. Depending where you read, historic recurrence of, on average, every 100-200 years...150-200 years...and a 2022 update. So, we are perhaps overdue. ARkStorm Scenario. Are we prepared? The ARkStorm scenario led by the USGS and hundreds of scientists and experts from many disciplines details impacts of a scientifically plausible storm similar to the Great California Storm of 1862 in the modern day. The scenario led to several important scientific advancements and will be used by emergency and resource managers to improve partnerships and emergency preparedness.
