When P.M. emailed me the following story, I knew that I would have to blog about it, because just when you think the Nazis are dead and gone and no longer play any active role in world events and deep politics, they're back, and no, for those of you suffering from terminal cases of Trump Derangement Syndrome, I don't mean his administration, alarming as some of his policies may be (like, for example, the sovereign wealth fund and its heavy use of the crypto-currency scam). No, I mean real, honest-to-badness Nazis, like Klaus Barbie, and his connection to South American neo-Nazi groups and drug cartels:

Notice that this story first ran a couple of days ago in Germany's well-known Der Speigel magazine, and that it exposes the relationship between Lyons, France's Gestapo chief, Klaus Barbie, to a major Latin American drug cartel:

Quote:Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie was deeply involved in setting up one of South America's most important drug cartels, according to a report Friday by German news weekly Der Spiegel.

Dubbed the "Butcher of Lyon" for his wartime torture of prisoners, the former Gestapo chief in the occupied French city fled to South America after the end of World War II.


Barbie was eventually arrested after being tracked down by France's most famous Nazi-hunting couple, Serge Klarsfeld and his wife Beate, the BBC reported. He was extradited from Bolivia to France in 1983 and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 on charges of crimes against humanity.

Barbie died in prison in 1991.

According to Der Spiegel, Barbie -- living under the alias Klaus Altmann -- became a security adviser to drug baron Roberto Suarez after the two men met in the 1970s.

But much later in the article we get this intriguing revelation:

Quote:A CIA dispatch from May 1974 seen by Der Spiegel reveals that the agency's officers already suspected Barbie of involvement in the drug trade, the magazine said.

Roberto Suarez's son-in-law Gerardo Caballero told Der Spiegel that "Barbie helped us a lot, including in working together with Pablo Escobar," the Colombian drug kingpin.

Barbie was recruited as an anti-communist agent by American Secret Services after the war, and the United States later apologized to France for helping Barbie evade justice.

Der Spiegel has previously reported that Barbie was also active as a secret agent for West German intelligence in Bolivia.

The magazine said he was recruited in late 1965 in the Bolivian capital La Paz and given the code name "Adler" ("Eagle").

Note how these last sentences are carefully revealing, and what they reveal: firstly, they reveal that Barbie was an intelligence asset of the United States after the war, as an "anti-Communist"; secondly, they reveal that he also became an agent for West German intelligence, the Bundesnachrichtendienst, at that time still under the watchful controlling eye of its founder, former Nazi General Reinhard Gehlen, who headed the Wehrmacht's military intelligence unit for the Eastern Front, Fremde Heere Ost (Foreign Armies East). And finally, note that Barbie was also connected with, and was "security advisor" to several Latin American drug cartels. He was, in effect, a kind of Nazi International consigliare to the criminal drug underground.

But again, all of this has been known for some time. Indeed, Henrik Kruegger outlined much of this US Intelligence-Nazi-drug cartel connection in his classic 1970s and 1980s book on the topic, The Great Heroin Coup, and how this was all connected to the Clowns In America's restructuring of the international drug trade in view of the impending collapse of the American war effort in Vietnam. I briefly outlined these same connections in my book The Nazi International, which relied on Kruegger's work.

So the story is not new.  And this raises a question: why revive this whole connection now? What is the purpose? Is it mere distraction, an attempt to get people to "see Nazis" everywhere? Or is it something else?

It's in answer to that last question that I propose some rather unusual high octane speculation. There are two factors on the geopolitical stage that need to be born in mind in any attempt to answer this question: (1) Mr. Trump's statements and executive orders that have placed the Mexican drug cartels on the international terrorism list, a signal message to the other Latin American drug cartels, and (2) the incoming German coalition government's attempts to lock the Alternativ fur Deutschland, now the largest political party in Germany, out of power and to tar it with the brush of being a Neo-Nazi organization, even while it races into a coalition with Die Linke, an ultra-radical left party that is mostly a "makeover" of the old East German Communist Party.  Strange bedfellows indeed for the Christian Democratic Union, the party of West Germany's first post-war Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, who definitely was not a Communist.  So why revive the story now?

That depends on who is driving the story back into the public consciousness. The most obvious candidate is the German government itself, and its direct links to media organs like Der Spiegel, a magazine with clear connections to the government and its intelligence agencies, much like the "newspapers of record" in the United States. Think of Der Spiegel as Germany's version of American intelligence's "mighty Wurlitzer" and "Operation Mockingbird".  It puts out what "the German powers that be" want people to be thinking about. And right now, the German government wants to tar the AfD with the "far right brush", and that, in Germany, means Nazis. It could, similarly, be the United States and the Trump administration itself, but for very different reasons, namely, to remind people of the very real, and very nasty, links that the Latin American drug cartels have: not only to Communist China, but also to that hornet's nest, that postwar cesspool, of the Nazi International as I have called it. That extra-territorial "state" spread throughout the world, and funding its operations precisely through such arrangements with the drug cartels. The two - international fascism and international criminal undergrounds - piggyback on each other to a great extent, as Mr. Kruegger revealed in his classic study.

But the third possibility is that it is coming ultimately from that nexus between the cartels and that fascist/Nazi international itself, as a warning, perhaps, to Mr. Trump to remember what he proposes to tango - and tangle - with. This view has a significant thing to commend it, since the story appears both in German and the USA at more or less the same time. As noted, that implies an infrastructure of influence in both countries that the intelligence nexus between them, via that postwar Nazi International, can provide. Its appearance now would suggest that that whole nexus still survives and operates in the current world.

But whatever one's view of this - whether it reappears now because of its utility to the German, or the American, or the post-war fascist causes - I highly doubt its reappearance at a time when we're seen power outages across a wide swath of Europe, the election of an American pope, a lawsuit filed against the Vatican bank by a Roman Catholic archbishop, hostilities between India and Pakistan, all at the same time, is purely accidental and coincidental.
