By now most people who have thought about such a subject realizes it is not what is right but what is left after a conflict that tells and justifies the tale.

I had read about a bottleneck of human diversity and population that happened in prehistory, which I thought was hundreds of thousands of years ago. I believe they thought it was a super volcano or some huge natural disaster.
This sure sounds like men going to war and not coming back. It makes sense with the agricultural revolution and the sedentary lifestyle that comes with it.

Could have been a plague of some kind that started on the battlefields and killed very quickly those who didn't die in battle.

Explanation: It also made the entire world smell like rotten eggs, from the sulphur gas emitted, for ten years straight.
