Quote:Something strange happened on the Isle of Wight in the early 1970s. Two children encountered an entity so bizarre, so inexplicable, that even decades later, the details remain chilling. It wasn’t a ghost. It wasn’t an alien—at least not in any form we recognise. It was something else entirely.

Locals whispered about it. A few researchers took note. But the story of the Sandown Clown remained on the fringes of the unexplained, tucked into odd corners of UFO lore and Fortean footnotes.

Until now!

On the evening of 7th June, in the shadowed heart of Bembridge Fort, something extraordinary is happening. For one night only, we’re opening the vault.

The Mystery of the Sandown Clown (Declassified)” is more than just a talk — it’s an unveiling.

We’ll be presenting never-before-seen documents, private correspondence, and official records that have lain hidden for decades. This isn’t second-hand speculation or recycled internet lore. This is new. This is raw.

Among the revelations:
  • First-hand testimonials from eyewitnesses who have never spoken publicly before.
  • Insight from ex-Ministry of Defence UFO desk staff, now free to discuss what they encountered.
  • Unearthed sketches, statements, and strange anomalies tied to the original case—and possibly beyond it.

Some of what we’ll reveal raises more questions than answers. Some of it will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. And some of it might just change how you view this peculiar island forever.

The event will take place in the atmospheric Magazine Theatre and Exhibition Space at Bembridge Fort, surrounded by ancient walls that have seen their fair share of secrets.

With just 45 tickets available, this is an intimate gathering for the curious, the courageous, and the committed seekers of truth.

The Mystery of the Sandown Clown (Declassified)

The "Sandown Clown," also known as Sam, is a mysterious figure encountered by two young children in Sandown, Isle of Wight, UK, in May 1973. The children described the being as a cross between a clown, a robot, and an alien, with unique features like triangular eyes, a square nose, and yellow lips. Sam reportedly lived in a self-made metallic hut and invited the children in, engaging with them for nearly half an hour before vanishing without a trace.

One of the weirdest of paranormal accounts, but the Isle of Wight has a number of them!

The approximate location near the airport.       The Isle of Wight.                                     The described 'hut'.

I just recalled the 2023 thread that was already here on RN about Sandown Sam!

As is often the case with encounters, commonalities with other cases are difficult to perceive.  But IMO perception is what this encounter is all about.  It has been speculated that whatever it is that people encounter in such reports frames the witness' perception in terms of objects and concepts with they are already familiar.  Robots and clowns are notions which fascinate children, and it may have been the case that the children who had this encounter were at least familiar with what clowns and robots are ... thus serving as the "framing structure" for their perception of the encounter.

I don't doubt these children encountered the paranormal, but their visual perception of the event may not have at all matched the reality of it.

One curious bit.

I read the original BUFORA article about the "Sam" encounter.  Later, in the same issue, there was a mention of a fellow in Georgia in 1977 who saw a ship land and from which beings emerged.

They were also described as having very white skin and no necks, that is, the heads sat on their shoulders.  As well, they were described as having "beautiful" clothing ... colorful, with frills, something like the children described regarding "Sam". And they had shoes with tips that turned up ... fae-like in a way.
