Modern letters of Marque - 727Sky - 04-17-2025
Let's talk about issuing Letters of Marque in the modern era... and why American pirates might not be as crazy of an idea as it seems. Calling all pirate wannabees ! I want to know how the payment schedule will work and do Drones count ??
Way back when Privateers could own "cannons" would this mean we could buy 105s and 155s for our paddle boats... Heat seeking moisture missiles or drones might work best with less recoil ?? !!
If this goes through I might start a flag company as no respectful pirate wannabe can sail forth into battle without a show of colors IMO.. In this case the Red flag with all its meaning might be very popular ??

It is an interesting concept. I do understand privateering but didn't know it was still permitted. Well, in the US anyway.
I can't see it occurring other than close to coastlines with friendly ports.
Might work with the capture and seizure of vessels in the drug war and subsequent rewards for the trafficked goods. Would like to see it with illegal fishing boats off our coast but would the cost of such for a privateer would surely outweigh the profit as those boats/junks are sunk and or burned.
Gone are the days when a crew captured a prize and sailed it back to port to share in the profits of such.
Maybe if Elon can get his Starship program up and running, space pirates might be operating in LEO capturing sats and other secret operational wartime operations in orbit. Hmmm. Maybe the Chinese Space Station.
I'm sure there would be a lot of 'cadets' willing to do the job.

seeing that pmc's / mercenaries are just about a step above or the same as a privater / pirate. it doesn't surprise me none to see it being a consideration.

Technically, there's a difference between pirate and privateer. The pirates are the ones acting without letters of marque, purely on their own authority and in their own interest, so they are not safe from being hung even in their home countries.
But there are gray areas, when governments want to have it both ways. Drake was endorsed, but only after the event. Raleigh had king James' backing before he invaded Spanish territory to find Eldorado, but he got disowned and executed when he failed.

P.S. On the subject of identifying labels, you might find it interesting to look up the complex cross-language relationship between "freebooter" and "filibuster". I don't have the details at my finger-tips.

Modern naval warships are so lightly armored these days that a 75-mm recoilless rifle would be a serious threat. Those could be mounted on small craft and avoid the issues with recoil.
