Swatting incidents IMO are not a laughing matter and can turn deadly in a heart beat .... There really are some terribly sick people in this world IMO.

I do hope (without much faith) they can catch the person who made the call and endangered everyone's life....

I listen to the Joe Pags Show occasionally. I bet he pissed off a caller, he can be pretty mouthy when he doesn't like a caller.

It does happen.

In October of 2014, I had not just one, but two SWAT teams show up and surround my house. One was the local sheriff's SWAT team, and the other was a State Police SWAT team.

This was before we had the infrared cameras, and really is what precipitated their installation. About 10 in the evening, I got one of my "feelings" that someone was mucking around outside the house. So, I got up from my desk and went to the back bedroom, turned out the lights, and looked out the window to see if I could see anything. Sure enough, there was a shadowy man crouching just around the corner of the house. Just a silhouette, I couldn't identify him as a cop at that point.

I grabbed my rifle and headed for the front balcony door, which overlooks the front yard and keeps me elevated. Grace asked me what I was doing, and I told her I was gonna go shoot a motherfucker that was lurking around the house in the dark... which of course got her a bit excited.

I slipped out the balcony door from the living room, and there was just about an acre of armed men in my front yard. Right then, I heard one of them start yelling "GUN! GUN!" and saw muzzles starting to sweep towards me. So I yelled "Y'all hold yer damned horses! and ducked right back inside before they could bring their muzzles to bear. I did see in that instant, that they were all attired in BDU's, but those BDU's had badges attached.

Then I laid the rifle down on the love seat, and raised my hands high enough for them to see they were empty, and went back out to parley. They couldn't get in, and I felt like I could hit the deck if they got excitable before lead started flying... but it never did.

When they saw me again, and saw my hands, then the discussion started, beginning with their demand that I identify myself, which I did. They were puzzled, since I wasn't who they thought I was. Once we got it straightened out, it was discovered that they were at the wrong house. A case of mistaken identity where the 911 caller had given faulty directions. Once that was established, they sent a team across the way to the right house, and got their man.

It didn't help matters that Grace came out like a mad woman slinging shit with a sock, yelling at them that this was "our goddamned house!" I did try to explain the her that shouting at an acre of armed men was not the smartest thing she had done that day, but to no avail. the woman thought they were about to shoot me, and just wasn't having any of that.

But we did get it eventually sorted out, they got their man, and apologized for the mistake - but, had they well-ventilated me, that apology wouldn't have meant much, now would it?

So, it does happen, and a split-second decision can sometimes mean the difference between eating breakfast the next day and leaking all your vital fluids out that night. It wasn't long before we had the cameras installed, so that I could identify "intruders" before sallying forth to meet and greet them.

the cameras have their drawbacks, though. One is that they require electricity to get a picture on the monitor. Right after last year's hurricane, on about the 6th night without power, my car alarm went off at around 5 AM, and I had to go forth to conquer without benefit of knowing who was there. I was, however, seen clearing the area with my AR which has a flashlight mounted on it, and that was enough to put folks on notice around here that I still have enough life in me that if someone fucks around here, they stand a fair likelihood of finding out how that's gonna work for them. Haven't had any trouble since, but I still stay on the alert all night, as i have for years now.
