A joint resolution was introduced on the first day of the 2025 Maryland General Assembly session to exonerate settlers accused of witchcraft nearly 400 years ago.
Del. Heather Bagnall, D-Anne Arundel County, is the sole resolution sponsor that would require the state government to formally apologize to colonists who faced witch trials prior to the nation’s independence.
Quote:At least seven individuals were accused of or indicted for the crime of witchcraft, at least two individuals were convicted, and at least one individual was executed in the Providence of Maryland prior to the American Revolution,” the resolution says.

The two-page initiative was pre-filed on October 28, just days before Halloween. The resolution says constitutional protections were absent during colonial Maryland witch trials. Del. Bagnall's effort characterizes these prosecutions as a “miscarriage of justice,” adding that the witch trials unfairly led to “community strife and panic.”

I guess this wouldn't hurt.
not a priority though.

Talk about your "cold cases" - 400 years ago? How can they prove now that the individuals were NOT witches, after 400 years?

It appears that 5 of the 7 were already exonerated - at their trials - so a new "exoneration" would be a bit redundant, wouldn't it?

As for those convicted, in addition to the above lack of evidence after 400 years that they were NOT witches, if they've already been convicted, doesn't that require a pardon from the governor rather than an exoneration? I think that exoneration ship already sailed with the conviction...

From your link:

Quote:Meanwhile, Del. Szeliga questioned who would benefit if the resolution were passed.

“I think it’s more leftist, Hollywood elitists trying to get a foothold, making Maryland a genie pig for these ultra-extreme, radical feminist movements that are going on,” Del. Szeliga said.

Biden will issue a post-pardon on Jan 20th.

I guess it will be 400 years by the time some of these democrats apologize for their Trump witch hunt.

one of the handful of evil Republicans in the Maryland assembly pointed out that this took place during the colonial era; the laws and courts were under the auspices of the British Empire.
so if there is to be a pardon it must come from London.
