Alien lima beans - BodhisattvaStyle - 01-05-2024 I have a weird question that I can't seem to find an answer to anywhere. This is something I've never seen before and don't know what to make of it. I figured I'd bring it to the fine folks here. I had some dried baby lima beans, store bought, and I was all set to cook me some good ol rice beans and cornbread (shout out to the southerners), and so I went ahead and soaked my beans. I had a full bowl of water (plenty) and about a cup, maybe cup and a half of beans in the water. I put the bowl in the fridge, and happened to glance at them just now and something weird had happened. First off, all the water was gone. I'm a chef, so yes, I had plenty of water. The beans had soaked all that water up, clumped together in one big mass, and every bean looked like a chewed up piece of bubble gum. They had only been soaking for about an hour. I've soaked a lot of beans in my time, and have never witnessed this. Anybody come across this before? What the * happened to my beans? Alien lima beans? Cause that's what it looked like. Looked like it formed into a brain. ![]() I'm still gonna cook them. Just wondering if any of you have seen this before. RE: Alien lima beans - GeauxHomeLittleD - 01-05-2024 I have never had that occur, and I usually soak beans anywhere from a few hours to overnight depending on if I'm cooking them on the stove or in the crock pot. At the very least I parboil them and let them soak for an hour or so afterwards if I'm short on time. Very strange! I'm starting to wonder if they were actually real beans. Could these possibly be lab grown beans. GMO's? Whatever the case, it;s wEiRd! I am thinking that they were not real beans but more of that fake stuff they have been slipping us for a while now. RE: Alien lima beans - Ninurta - 01-05-2024 I've never heard of that, either. However, I've never dealt with lima beans as in I've never cooked them, not on purpose. I usually deal with pinto beans, kidney beans, black beans, and the like, beans that look like beans and taste like beans, There is a reason they used to call the old C-ration meal of "ham and lima beans" ham and motherfuckers, and there is a reason guys would trade those for anything, anything at all, that wasn't ham and lima beans.. I feel certain that lima beans were only placed on Earth by Satan to torment our souls. I have seen overly-dried pinto beans wrinkle up like old people as they soaked, probably due to differential absorption between the skins and the meat of them, but I've never seen them clump up and look like a brain. I'd probably get that out of my refrigerator before it starts talking, . RE: Alien lima beans - BodhisattvaStyle - 01-05-2024 (01-05-2024, 11:22 PM)Ninurta Wrote: I've never heard of that, either. These are baby limas. How the f did you know I was making ham with them? Lol Must be that remote viewing thing, huh? ![]() (01-05-2024, 11:22 PM)NightskyeB4Dawn Wrote:(01-05-2024, 10:27 PM)GeauxHomeLittleD Wrote: I have never had that occur, and I usually soak beans anywhere from a few hours to overnight depending on if I'm cooking them on the stove or in the crock pot. Update on the "mutant beans." I just finished up dinner. The beans were actually good. Didn't notice a difference in flavor, really. However, when I cooked the beans, they went back to their original form!?!?! So weird... Fantastic, man! It's always fantastic! Is that "Stay-Hold" hair spray? Quote: It might be the thing I mentioned with the pinto beans then - differential absorption between the hulls of the beans and the "meat" of them. If that's the case, then I can only theorize that when you cooked them, the added heat may have caused the "meat" to swell enough to re-fill the hulls again, maybe by increasing the absorption of the water? .
