Book of the Dead unearthed in Egypt - BodhisattvaStyle - 10-25-2023

I have been keeping an eye on all of the anciet artifacts that are being dug up recently. It has been about a  year since anything really interesting has popped up, so I thought I'd go ahead and share this.

  • Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered an ancient cemetery that has stone sarcophagi, coptic jars and even a "Book of the Dead" scroll.

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a 3,500-year-old cemetery that contains a "Book of the Dead" papyrus.

The cemetery, at Tuna al-Gebel in central Egypt, dates back to the New Kingdom (circa 1550 to 1070 B.C.) and contains mummies, sarcophagi, amulets and numerous "shabti" (also called ushabti) figurines that were meant to serve the deceased in the afterlife, according to an Arabic statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The "Book of the Dead" papyrus found in the cemetery is about 43 to 49 feet (13 to 15 meters) long. Archaeologists from the ministry have been excavating the site since 2017 and found the cemetery recently.

statement contained little information on the newly found copy of the "Book of the Dead." It is not clear which exact texts it contains or with whom it was buried. No photographs of the "Book of the Dead" papyrus were released, and members of the team that discovered it did not respond to requests for comment.

The fact that the team hasn't responded isn't surprising. I wish they had taken (or released) some photos. . Having read the Key of Solomon and The Lesser Key of Solomon I would love to see one these actual scrolls of, "The Book of the Dead." I haven't heard about copies of any scrolls like this surfacing in a long while, so I thought this was neat.

Not that I'm into conjuring spirits and messing around with the dearly departed; just an area of study I've been working on for about a year now.

I am curious if we'll hear anymore about it, or if this story will dissappear soon. Either way....tis the season for spooky things. Happy Halloween-week, Rogue-Nation!

That's a significant time within the Egyptian history and please keep us updated on any curses that may arise.

I just thumbed through "The Book of the Dead" for the first time.

Not at all what I expected.

I think I may have watched too many movies.  Laughing

Honestly, I was expecting something like the movie The Mummy, or Evil Dead Lol Something with more kick to it.
I had actually just read The Key of Solomon, and that wasn't what I had expected either. That was a very interesting read. That book plays like a witchcraft guide, but I believe it would be considered more white magic (or good magic as a posed to evil magic).
The Book of the Dead, as much as I could tell in a hour of thumbing through it, reads pretty straight forward as Funeral/ceremonial instructions along with what to say to this god (and who they are) at this level, and so on. Simply presenting this item to this god and saying this prayer/admonition to reqch the next level. It actually does read like a text book to paradise; as the Egyptians saw the afterlife. Just sort of cut and dry though.

As am sitting here trying to put into words how I see TBotD it actually kinda reads like the Bible, but with funeral/burial instructions included.

Don't get me wrong, its interesting, and I will go back and give it a solid read. I was just expecting something darker, I guess. It honestly wasn't much different of a text than the Bible, in a way. Just multi-god and ceremonial entrance into paradise.

Like I started this post off with...I may have watched too many movies in my life. (ha)

A manual for the afterlife is a big deal.

Just a hundred years ago they were finding Wonderful Things ! In the valley acording to a certain Howard (kevin) Carter .

I would highly highly recommend The Tutankhamun deception by Gerald O'farrell    for intrigue and sculldugery!  .

The hoard of Jewels from the cemetary of the APES ! at the time it sold to the rockefellers or Rothchild's for a half a million , how Carter had called Wallis Budge from New York to read papyrus scrolls from inside the kilts of sentinels in  tomb Kv 62 and weeks later when budge was nearly in Egypt get told it was a mistake .

When Carter was fired from the dig the death mask we see today on display and marked as Tutankhamuns death mask was found hidden inside a crate of whisky uncatalogued and ready to be spirited away .

And all this from a man who took 10 years to catalogue the contents of that tomb ..

That above book will really open your eyes

Wow, interesting.
It seems like I remember something about this in school. I'll put that book on my reading list. Thanks
There was so much mystery to the Egyptians. So much we still haven't figured out. And probably never will.
