I got passed by when the last contract positions were let. Maybe a tad more harsh. Pretty sure it involved my age. When you get old it's time to retire. Retirement looks different person to person.
You've got a book to write, so this is more like a transition to another line of work. From what I've seen of you, you'll do just fine. Whatever you do, don't get a wild hair up your ass and go into politics.
