Here’s how it happened...

Paul Buchheit (@paultoo) had wanted Google to launch a web-based email service. He was employee #23, joining 3 months after Google had left its garage office.

Internally, some thought email might be a distraction from the search business. He also suggested Google's former company motto "Don't be evil" in a 2000 meeting on company values, after the motto was initially coined in 1999 by engineer Amit Patel.

A story about Google’s email plans was published right before the launch:

Naturally, when Google put out its own official release, some thought it was a joke.

Netscape was founded April 4, 1994.

Microsoft was founded April 4, 1975. Here’s how it got started...

1981:

Bill Gates and Paul Allen were high school friends in Seattle. They had a passion for programming. It inspired them to build a business before Microsoft.

It was called Traf-o-Data.

It analyzed traffic on the roads. And it set the stage for an even bigger software opportunity.

They read about the Altair 8800, made by an Albuquerque company called MITS.

It didn’t look like much, but it would become the first successful PC.

Gates and Allen pitched Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) on an idea.

They felt users should be able to program Altair in BASIC. Gates and Allen pitched MITS on developing a BASIC interpreter. A deal was struck and they moved to Albuquerque.

This was company headquarters in Albuquerque, NM

And Microsoft began creating BASIC versions for other computer makers.

Gates had a minor setback when he was arrested for a traffic violation. But Microsoft’s lucrative software licensing business kept growing.

The team was growing too. Here’s a staff photo from 1978.

Another turning point came in 1981. Microsoft created the operating system for IBM’s new PC. IBM had hoped to sell about 240,000 computers in its first 5 years. It ended up selling 3 million.

A decade after launch, Microsoft’s sales topped $140 million. Bill Gates told his Harvard professor that he would be a millionaire by the age of 30. He became a BILLIONAIRE at 31. By 1987, Gates had become the world’s youngest billionaire.

Wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper had an interesting film career. The strangest movie from his filmography has got to be the cult classic "Hell Comes To Frogtown" released Jan 1988.

'Hell' is the name of the hero of the story. He's a prisoner of the women who now run the USA after a nuclear/biological war. Results of the war are that mutants have evolved, and the human race is in danger of extinction due to infertility. Hell is given the task of helping in the rescue of a group of fertile women from the harem of the mutant leader (resembling a frog). Hell cannot escape since he has a bomb attached to his private parts which will detonate if he strays more than a few hundred yards from his guard.

KTLA made the first live nationwide television broadcast of a nuclear test from the Nevada Proving Ground—Shot Charlie, a 31-kiloton airdrop from a B-50 bomber.

Clip 1 | Clip 2Clip 3

Note that in the first clip (unlike in most archival and fictional films of nuclear explosions), the sound of the explosion does not occur at the same time as the flash. In this instance, it takes 44 seconds to be heard as sound travels much more slowly than light.

The second clip is actually from a different nuclear test in Nevada broadcast on KTLA one month later (possibly Shot Easy, on May 7, 1952). Still worth watching, especially for clearer image of the mushroom cloud and the reporter’s extremely excited live commentary.

The third clip above features New York Times reporter William L. Laurence—the only journalist to witness the Trinity test on July 16, 1945—discussing and comparing that first nuclear test to this one, and describing in fairly technical detail the mechanics of a nuclear explosion.

April 25, 1983, the Soviet Union released Yuri Andropov's reply letter to Maine elementary school student, Samantha Smith. Smith had written in 1982 asking the Russian leader if he was going to "vote to have a [nuclear] war." Smith died in a plane crash in 1985.

Yuri Andropov Letter to Samantha

Samantha Smith (June 29, 1972 – August 25, 1985) was an American peace activist and child actress from Manchester, Maine, who became famous for her anti-war outreaches during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.

After the release of Russian leader Yuri Andropov's response letter, Samantha Smith appeared on Nightline, The Tonight Show (twice), Donahue and other shows. After touring the Soviet Union, she wrote a book, "Journey to the Soviet Union". In 1984 she appeared with a Simon LeBon poster on "Charles in Charge."

At the time of her tragic death in a plane crash (her father also died), she was a cast member in Robert Wagner's ABC series LIME STREET. She appeared in 5 of the show's 8 episodes - all aired after her death and there is a dedication to her in the credits of the pilot.

Following her death, both President Ronald Reagan and Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev offered their public condolences. Smith's pen pal, Yuri Andropov had died on February 9, 1984.

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

A documentary on Mosinee's 1950 May Day has been in the works for many years, but I'm not sure what the status is of American May Day.

BASIC (Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) launched on this day in 1964.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen would later get a BASIC manual at their school computer lab.

When they later learned about the Altair 8800, they felt users should be able to program it using BASIC.

They struck a deal with the company.

The Altair 8800 became the first successful PC. And Gates and Allen had a fast growing software business.

An entire Wes Anderson film could be made from this post...

Anyone else get a slight Baphomet vibe tingle from this setup or have I just been too schizo-paranoid for too long?

Although, she is correct, imo. It's just the weaponized 2020s perpetual ritualized hyper-trans social media nonsense has gone way over the proverbial cliff.

Good lord to think this was the woman who got me through puberty watching re-runs, hoping there would be at least one episode her brasserie would slip off.

Off to Hollyweird...

LOL, "existential crisis" my arse. Gee, where & how many times have we heard that idiom in very recent times?

The meltdown Mayday is upon us...

As much as I enjoy watching evil interlocked in internecine combat with existential evil, the WGA could not possibly have picked a worse time to strike. The debt-crippled corporate media behemoths will most likely use the strike to radically downsize all of these money-bleeding studios and trim all future production to the marrow of the bone. As cold as this sounds, if I were a Hollywood hack I'd buy me a ticket back home and learn to code. The other option is to start browsing Amazon for tents because ChatGPT will fill the void.

Hollywood bled out half a trillion dollars last year. Think they care about a bunch of eminently replaceable hacks? Insanity.

Opera.
Bread 'n Circuses.
Rodeos.
Vaudeville.
Radio drama.
Comic books.
Rock 'n Roll.

What do they all have in common? They were some of the biggest moneymakers in mainstream entertainment.

And then they weren't.

Hollywood, the Abyss has reopened.

You're next.

"But, but, bu... I have so many sights to show the world."

Corporate AI is going to make everything and the soul is going to be sucked out of the planet.

Have a listen...

Lyrics:
Quote:Where in the world have you been
It's as strange as I've ever lived
So you're comin' along to the sideshow

I'll be fallin' all over like dominos
For girls are sad in their eyes
They're all standin' around bein' hypnotised
And walkin' me back to the firin' line

Ya smile to get in the door
Ya can't keep it closed anymore
Tell your ma that you're gone to the freakshow

I'm crawlin' all over the carnival
Just scratchin' a stitch in a skin
I'm moanin' for more of the medicine

In the mornin' you're wonderin' where ya been
Just turnin' your back to the ghost
And tryin' to look like you just might know
That all of the good that you've seen
Just went down and into the drain

Oh kids am I straight out for now
In the mornin' I'm gonna find it on out
What in the world can it be
It's as strange as I've ever seen

The girls are dead in their eyes
Just standin' around like they're hypnotised
Who'll follow me back to the freak show
I'm crawlin' all over the carnival
And I am home...

Happy Scorpio full moon eclipse day!

Are we feeling cleansed yet?

This month's full moon will be at its fullest around 1:30 pm EDT on Friday, May 5. The lunar eclipse will begin at 11:15 am EDT, peak at 1:24 pm, and end at 3:32 pm, during which the moon will be partially darkened as it moves through the Earth's shadow. However, this eclipse event will only be visible in places where the moon is above the horizon—so not here in the USA.

80 years ago today—more than two years before V-E Day and Nazi Germany’s defeat—the Manhattan Project’s Military Policy Committee eliminated Germany as the target of the still unproven atomic bomb, selecting Japan’s fleet at Truk Lagoon as the best target.

Choosing the first atomic target – May 5, 1943

According to Groves’s summary of the meeting:

Quote:“The point of use of the first bomb was discussed and the general view appeared to be that its best point of use would be on a Japanese fleet concentration in the Harbor of Truk [in the Pacific, north of New Guinea]. General Styer suggested Tokio but it was pointed out that the bomb should be used where, if it failed to go off, it would land in water of sufficient depth to prevent easy salvage. The Japanese were selected as they would not be so apt to secure knowledge from it as would the Germans.”
“Always” the target?
