A few pages from Bible Symbols (1908) which has, as the subtitle eloquently explains “the choicest passages of God's word put in the fascinating garb of pictures”.

Quote:Frank Beard (1842–1905) led many lives before designing hieroglyphic bibles. A successful political cartoonist by the age of seventeen, he drew one of the most widely reproduced Civil War satires, and was hailed as “the father of the American cartoon” by the Los Angeles Times in 1895. Deaf since childhood, he became a sought-after raconteur, famous for delivering “chalk talks”, lectures illustrated by rapidly drawn visuals. Touring the nation, his “sparkling, genial discourse about the mysteries of picture-making” — as a contemporary brochure described the act — entranced audiences almost as much as his lightning-quick pen. As he aged, politics gave way to an interest in religious education, and his belief in the transparency of visual communication led him to illustrate bibles in a pictographic idiom.

Beard’s first foray into this artform was Picture Puzzles, or, How to Read the Bible by Symbols (1899), followed by the more traditionally illustrated One Hundred Sermon Pictures (1902), and several editions of the volume on display above, Bible Symbols (first published in 1904). He did not invent the hieroglyphic bible — rather, Bible Symbols numbers among the last of this type of book to achieve widespread popularity. According to Benjamin Lindquist, who has written the definitive article on Beard’s life, the earliest known specimen dates to 1687, produced in Augsburg, Germany. As Egyptomania increasingly preoccupied the American mind in the nineteenth century, hieroglyphic bibles became one of the most popular forms of religious literature. The texts and images in Bible Symbols work like a rebus, mixing icons and scripture to provide multimedia access to the word of God. There is an impulse toward the universal here — in a corrupt and fallen world, a new visual language might help recover what was lost when Babel crumbled — and a pedagogic aspect, too. Employed in this way, images become mnemonics, and slow down the eye to inspire deeper contemplation, richer access. Despite questing after timeless truths, Beard was also a fallible man of his era. A hieroglyph of Native Americans stands in for “barbarous people”; a tableau that seemingly connotes “belief” shows people of color crouching before a white missionary. Pictures, just like words, bear a trace of their creator.

June 25, 1982: BLADE RUNNER was released. Acclaimed as one of the greatest science fiction movies ever made, and among director Ridley Scott’s greatest films. Are you ready for the Voight-Kampf test.

"Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it? That's what it is to be a slave." ― Roy Batty

There was a 1974 novel by Alan Nourse titled, The Bladerunner about smuggling medical equipment. Ridley Scott bought the rights to the title, but not the book. During production, Scott did an interview with where he said he preferred British crews because: "When I ask for something, they say ‘yes guvnor’ and do it. Not the case with American crews." This did not go down well with the American team Scott was working with.

One of the big questions and talking points from the film is whether or not Deckard is a replicant. Harrison Ford has said Deckard isn’t a replicant, and Ridley Scott has said he is. There are some hints in the film. At various points replicants are seen with a red glow in their eyes. The only "human" character who is seen with a red glow in their eyes is Deckard.

The character Gaff makes 3 origami creatures through the film: a chicken, a man, and a unicorn. He leaves the unicorn at Deckard’s apartment. Earlier, Deckard has a dream about a unicorn. How would Gaff know this, unless Deckard’s dreams have been implanted – i.e. he’s a replicant?

There are differences to the novel:
- Philp K. Dick makes it clear that Deckard is human. He takes the Voight-Kampff test and passes it.
- The book is set after World War Terminus which has led to mutants called Chicken heads.
- There’s a religion called the Mercers who are psychic.

Here's a scholarly paper: MEDITATIONS ON BLADE RUNNER (2005) by Martin, Michael. Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies.

A giant electrified model of the human brain's control system is demonstrated by Dr. A.G. Macleod, at the meeting of the American Medical Association in New York, on June 26, 1961. The maze of twisting tubes and blinking lights traces the way the brain receives information and turns it into thought and then action.

June 26, 1987: Stanley Kubrick's FULL METAL JACKET was released. The film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel THE SHORT-TIMERS by Gustav Hasford. Hasford served in Vietnam as a combat correspondent with the 1st Marine Division during the Tet Offensive.

Matthew Modine got the "Joker" role instead of Kilmer.

Kubrick and writer Michael Herr worked closely but Kubrick only spoke to Hasford on the phone. He wanted to meet Hasford but Herr said “he’s a very scary man.” Kubrick and Hasford did meet and it went so badly Hasford was kept out of the writing process for the rest of the film.

Billy Don Moyers, gone at age 91. He lied extravagantly about Lyndon Johnson, first about his worth and then about his legacy. And then, like many of his contemporaries in the Johnson administration, he simply refused to go away.  In 2023 he told The Guardian exactly what President Johnson said after LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and talked about losing the South.

After Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Mr. Moyers, not yet 30, became one of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s lieutenants. Time magazine called him "LBJ’s young man in charge of everything". He was named White House press secretary in July 1965. He was a director of the Council on Foreign Relations, from 1967 to 1974. He was also a onetime steering committee member of the annual Bilderberg Meeting. Later a Newsday publisher before becoming an acclaimed television journalist, mostly for PBS.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan "Razin" Caine, shows a test demonstration of the GBU-57A/B MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator) 30,000lb “Bunker Buster” Bomb during today’s press conference at the Pentagon.

Gen. Caine stated that 15 years went into working on the bombing plan for the Fordow Nuclear Facility in Iran, adding that PhDs working on classified GBU-57 “Bunker Bursting” Bomb Program were the “biggest users of supercomputers” in the United States. Before concluding with a statement clarifying that the GBU-57s dropped from B-2s on Fordow “functioned as designed” by the U.S. Air Force.

The fact that General Caine said we had a guy watching the construction of the nuclear sites for 16 years, then made a specific bomb to deal with it, just like in the movie STAR WARS or in TOP GUN: MAVERICK, right down the ventilator shaft, except multiple times is rather astonishing. Apparently, The FORCE was definitely with these B-2 pilots.

The video of GBU-57 Massive Ordinance Penetrator Test was released today which I assume was done to hush up the media about the Iran bombing reports. Fox news had this on loopback this morning.

General Caine on GBU-57:

"Unlike a conventional land-based bomb, you won't see a crater from the impact because they're designed to burrow deep and then detonate."

Also:

"One of the pilots who dropped the bombs on Fordow told me it was the brightest explosion he had ever seen. It literally looked like daylight."

Hmmmmmmm.

Gen. Dan Caine gave a step-by-step recounting of how Patriot crews shot down Iranian missiles. US and Qatari air defenses intercepted Iran's ballistic missile strikes on Monday night at Al Udeid Air Base. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said officials believe it's the largest single Patriot engagement in US military history. Sorry Ukraine, all were expended.

The Trump Department of Defense seems to realize that it is not only important to win the war, it is even more important to win the legend. Thus it is retelling stories about recent engagements in the manner elders might have told it by the campfire in the days of old.

In my recollection, it was when they told us the Hunter Biden Laptop was "Russian disinformation".

According to my analysis, that makes Hunter Biden an unregistered Russian Spy, since he is the one who planted the alleged "disinformation", but no one in the intel community noticed that at the time, and to date he has not been prosecuted for his foreign espionage activities.

Chronicle of America

In 1761 between the mystery schools & secret societies were putting forward a kind a female deity that they called "Columbia" which was the actual name for America. Some claim it was Amerigo Vespucci where we got the name "America" but we don't really know and he never personally took credit for the name. He was a traveler but the interesting piece about him is he had his own printing press. Going back into the Templar history their name for their kind of New Atlantis was MERICA. The Egyptian/Templar/Mason name for Sirius is Merica.

Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking. And when she passes, each one she passes goes, ah.

"The Girl From Ipanema" popularized Brazilian bossa nova in the United States and beyond, thanks to the singing of Astrud Gilberto. It was the first song she ever recorded. It brought her worldwide recognition, but not royalties. Astrud Astrud Gilberto born Astrud Evangelina Weinert (March 29, 1940 – June 5, 2023) was a Brazilian samba and bossa nova singer and songwriter.

Today is National Sunglasses Day. President John F. Kennedy donned a pair of shades when he visited USS Oriskany (CVA-34) in June 6, 1963. Perhaps he needed to protect himself from the bright glare of the "rainbow sideboys" who greeted him!

The most frequently used ship names in US Navy history are USS Ranger (10), USS Enterprise (9), USS Washington (9), USS Wasp (9), USS Hornet (8), USS Morris (8), and USS Niagra (8). The US Navy also has an experimental unmanned surface vessel in Ghost Fleet Overlord named USV Ranger. The Royal Navy and its predecessors have had 39 vessels bearing the name Swallow.

Ghost Fleet Overlord is a U.S. Navy program developing large unmanned surface vessels (USVs) to enhance naval operations through autonomy. Launched in 2018 with the Department of Defense, it tests vessels like USV Ranger and Mariner for surveillance, logistics, and combat roles, reducing risks to human crews. Achievements include long-range autonomous transits, such as 3,200 nautical miles to Japan, and integrating advanced systems like virtualized Aegis. However, full autonomy is not yet achieved, requiring some human oversight, and integrating USVs with manned fleets remains complex. Costs and long-term strategic value are also under scrutiny. The program continues to evolve, balancing potential with many ongoing challenges.

June 27, 1971: UK’s 1st National Scrabble Championship was held in London. It was the brainchild of writer Gyles Brandreth and supported by the game’s manufacturers J. W. Spear & Sons. The winner was Stephen Haskell, a teacher, with an aggregate of 1,345 points. The tournament is held annually since its inception in 1971 (except 1995, 2020, & 2021). The youngest champion was 15-year-old Allan Saldanha in 1993.

Gyles Brandreth is a British broadcaster, writer and former politician. He has worked as a television presenter, theatre producer, journalist, author & publisher.
In 1971, author and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth visited Bristol Prison whilst conducting research for a book and noticed the inmates playing Scrabble; at around the same time, he also saw the Royal Family playing the game in a British TV documentary. He placed a small ad in The Times inviting anyone interested in taking part in a National Scrabble Championship to contact him. Hundreds replied, and after he contacted the game's owners at the time, J. W. Spear & Sons, the Championships were born.

No wonder the Washington Evening Star went out of business (bankrupt in 1981)... It was announced on June 27, 1980 that 902nd Military Intelligence officer Martin W. Barry, a signal supervisor at Fort Meade, won $3,500 in the Pruzzle contest. 6.5 years earlier he had a close encounter.

The very spooky 902nd Military Intelligence Group at Fort Meade is responsible for carrying out proactive counterintelligence activities worldwide. Its mission includes detecting, identifying, assessing, countering, neutralizing, and exploiting foreign intelligence entities and insider threats to safeguard the Army and Department of Defense forces, information, and technology.

In 1978 Joseph W. McMoneagle was assigned to the Headquarters of U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) in Arlington, Virginia, where he culminated his career acting as a Special Projects Intelligence Officer with the 902nd Military Intelligence Group for the remainder of his service.

The U.S. Army recently marked the activation of the new Army Counterintelligence Command with a ceremony on July 28, 2022. As a result, the 902nd Military Intelligence Group was inactivated in a separate ceremony held earlier that day. This step was taken to align Army counterintelligence efforts with the protection of Army and Department of Defense modernization initiatives. They still exist today, just rebranded under a new name.

As ALWAYS, where you find spooky UFO encounters, you will find human spooks lurking in the shadows.

Peter Thiel, in a new interview, says the Antichrist couldn't be an "evil tech genius," but instead would be someone like Greta Thunberg. Thiel's Founders Fund currently has billions invested in AI surveillance firms like Palantir and Anduril.

Naturally, the real Antichrist is the person who would seek to stop Skynet, not the one trying to create it (or the technology itself)! Greta was brought up 11 times!! Thiel’s obviously smart but damn he’s weird. I think his rigid belief in Catholicism limits his world view and as such is a dangerous person to hold power.

Peter Thiel and the Antichrist

I've never seen any super rich dude more obsessed with the antichrist than Peter Thiel. This guy is like a super villain from a movie in real life. Is he trying to sound like this? Or does he just have no self-awareness? Most people at least try to hide that they are pure evil. Incredible that he's linking himself to Francis Bacon. All the world's a stage.

The whole DOGE destruction of government? Thiel wanted to do that during the first Trump term. Curtis Yarvin’s influence over the Republican Party? Thiel funded him and pushed his ideas for decades. Vice President JD Vance? Thiel funded his entire career and political rise.

Unfortunately, the Failing Times does not get into any of this. Instead, he simply gives Thiel a platform to deliver his usual talking points. For example, Thiel brings up Charles Manson and LSD and hippies, as he has been doing for years. But the more relevant pairing in a discussion with Thiel is Curtis Yarvin and LSD & hippies. From a recent New Yorker profile of Yarvin:

Quote:Politically and culturally, Yarvin was a liberal—“a big old hippie,” as Tanner [Yarvin’s ex-girlfriend] put it. He had a ponytail, wore a silver hoop earring, dropped acid at raves, and wrote poetry.

And then Yarvin, embraced by Thiel, went on to develop a scary political theory that is proving far more influential than anything Manson ever imagined. The vice president of the United States quotes Yarvin and follows him on Twitter. Manson could never have dreamed of such White House clout.

Here is a sampling of headlines:

Some other real questions the New York Times could have asked Thiel:

Curtis Yarvin, the pro-monarchy extremist who wants to end American democracy, has been getting a lot of attention. You have supported him for decades, and now his ideas are being adopted by the Trump administration. DOGE, for example, was directly inspired by Yarvin’s RAGE (Retire All Government Employees). How do you explain your current relationship to Yarvin, and do you consider DOGE a success? Do you agree with Yarvin that we need a system besides democracy, and what would that be?

And how about, You have said the Antichrist will be someone who speaks about Armageddon nonstop in order to seize totalitarian power. Peter, you talk about Armageddon, apocalypse and the Antichrist with an alarming frequency. Your surveillance company, Palantir, is developing a trove of data on American citizens that resembles the totalitarian Big Brother from Orwell’s 1984. By your own definition, aren’t you a good candidate for Antichrist?

Also, you’ve spent years warning that liberal democracy is collapsing and that Silicon Valley is spiritually bankrupt. Yet you've made billions from both. Is your critique sincere, or is it just another BS branding strategy to consolidate wealth and power while appearing "contrarian" or anti-establishment?

You have invested in Seasteading and Pronomos Capital, which seek to create new corporate-governed cities to compete with existing democratic nations. Trump’s so-called Freedom Cities clearly match this idea, which reflects Yarvin’s idea for "Patchwork" nations and Balaji Srinivasan’s idea for so-called Network States. Why is this idea important to you, and how far do you think it will get under Trump?

AMERICA? You have long warned against the supposed dangers of multiculturalism and democracy. Now, decades later, you're funding candidates and thinkers who openly challenge those same ideals. But the United States is a multicultural democracy. What’s your endgame, and does the USA still exist in that future?

You often speak in religious and apocalyptic terms, but you fund people and movements that thrive on chaos, disinformation, and authoritarianism. Are you trying to save the West, or are you accelerating its collapse in hopes of rebuilding something more to your liking?

The Sovereign Individual: Mastering the Transition to the Information Age is one of your favorite books. You wrote the preface to the 2020 reprint of the book — a very apocalyptic work that predicted the rise of crypto and the fall of nation-states. Why is that book so damn important to you? And do you think its prophecies are largely on track?

You seem weirdly terrified of death. Are you going to die someday, or do you have other plans to live forever? Do you believe in reincarnation?

But NYT columnist Ross Douthat of "Interesting Times" podcast does not ask any questions about the eXtreme Silicon Valley ideologies which now hold a lot of influence in American politics. Instead, we get a bland repeat of the same bizarre ideas Thiel promotes in all of his interviews. The word "democracy" doesn’t appear once in the transcript.

When "journalists" offer platforms instead of scrutiny, tech-bro billionaires like Thiel get to launder fringe ideologies into public discourse while evading the tough important questions.

The growing cult worship of media propped up characters like Deus ex Elon & his fellow billionaire pals (Bill Gates, Bezos, Peter Thiel), Greta, Dr. St Fauci and the many celebs, to the worship of Pharmakeia is a strong indicator of societal demise into the false light of Lucifer...the master deceiver.

I heard Palantir was at the heart of the IAEA’s program for keeping tabs on Iran’s nuclear compliance.

Trump mentioned the Paperclip being invented in 1817. However, the so-called modern paper clip was invented in the 1890s. Everyone laughs and fact-checks it.

That’s the bait.

What happened in 1817?

President Trump Participates in the One, Big, Beautiful Event - 6/26/25

Temporal Misdirection: He invokes "paperclip" and ties it to a wrong year on purpose. But 1817 isn’t random, that year marks the reforming of the New York Stock Exchange Board. A lot of what Trump does publicly and clandestinely is about the NY Stock Exchange. He’s connecting Paperclip (covert deep state machinery) with 1817 (the origin of centralized American capital power). He’s collapsing the industrial, financial, and covert into a single symbolic event.

James Monroe was inaugurated as the fifth U.S. president on March 4, 1817, marking the start of the "Era of Good Feelings," characterized by relative political unity and economic progress under the Democratic-Republican Party.

Operation Paperclip Signal:

Most minds will automatically goto Operation Paperclip. The post-WWII operation where the U.S. secretly absorbed Nazi scientists. These were the engineers of the nuclear bomb, Rocketry, MKUltra, Aerospace, DARPA.

That "paperclip" is a symbol of hidden state power, of turning evil into utility, secrecy into empire.

Trump’s invocation is a subconscious red pill:
What began as foreign dark science became the root of our modern shadow state.

1817 as the Genesis of Capture:

1817 marks the first formal fusion of state and market via the NYSE. He’s pointing to the origin of:

- Market narrative control
- Monetary manipulation
- Institutional collusion

So we arrive at Paperclip = hidden control infrastructure
1817 = the seed of financial capture

Together they say: The system you live in was engineered by covert design, through both finance and hidden tech. And it started much earlier than you think.

The Paperclip Is You:

The ultimate message?

You are the paperclip.

A manufactured tool, bent into shape, used to bind things together that should never have been connected - then discarded without thought. Trump is showing that history is not a linear sequence, it’s a circle of loops and callbacks.
And the people - us - are trapped in it unless we decide to decode the hidden agenda and break out of the Matrix.

Final Translation:

Trump didn’t misspeak. He planted a trigger.
And those who laughed missed it.
Those who looked closer woke up.

1817 was not about the paperclip.
It was about who controls the world and how long they’ve been doing it.
The real message isn’t in the paperclip. It’s in the glitch it causes.
That's your weekly wacky conspiracy.

Herodotus asserts that if the Persians decided something while drunk, they made a rule to reconsider it when sober. Authors after Herodotus have added that if the Persians made a decision while sober, they made a rule to reconsider it when they were drunk.

The Babylonian Talmud contains the passage, 'wine enters, secret goes out'. It continues, 'in three things is a man revealed: in his wine goblet, in his purse, and in his wrath'.

Round, round with the glass, boys, as fast as you can,
Since he who don't drink cannot be a true man.
For if truth is in wine, then 'tis all but a whim
To think a man's true when the wine's not in him.
Drink, drink, then, and hold it a maxim divine
That there's virtue in truth, and there's truth in good wine!

July 1, 1931: American pilot Wiley Post and his Australian navigator Harold Gatty became the first people to circumnavigate the globe in a single-engined  Lockheed 5B Vega named the Winnie Mae after travelling 15,747 miles in the record time of 8 days and 15 hours and 51 minutes. Charles Lindbergh called Gatty the "Prince of Navigators."

Wiley Hardeman Post (November 22, 1898 – August 15, 1935) known for his work in high-altitude flying, he helped develop one of the first pressure suits and discovered the jet stream. On August 15, 1935, he and American humorist Will Rogers were killed when his aircraft crashed on takeoff from a lagoon near Point Barrow, Alaska.

July 1, 1975: Former U.S. President Richard Nixon said, in an affidavit to federal court, that he had secretly begun taping Oval Office conversations at the suggestion of his predecessor, President Lyndon Johnson, who had said that the tapes “had proved to be exceedingly valuable in preparing his memoirs, and he urged that I re-install the recording devices”. The affidavit was filed as part of Nixon’s suit seeking custody of his records, including the tape recordings, some of which had proved he had ordered a coverup of the Watergate investigation.

July 2, 1881: Garfield Assassinated! Charles J. Guiteau shot and fatally wounded the newly inaugurated U.S. President James A. Garfield in the lobby of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Depot in Washington, D.C., as he yelled, “I am a stalwart and Arthur is now President of the United States!” Guiteau blamed the president for not selecting him for a job at the U.S. Consulate in Paris.

"In the President’s madness he has wrecked the grand old Republican party, and for this he dies."

Comment of Charles Guiteau, eighteen days before shooting President Garfield, quoted from evidence given at Guiteau’s trial, in John K. Porter’s closing speech to the jury, January 23, 1882.

Charles Guiteau likely suffered from mental illness, as many reports of his behavior would attest. Born in Illinois, he lived an erratic life, attempting several unsuccessful careers before turning to the practice of law in Chicago. His wife, to whom he was reportedly abusive, divorced him in 1874 after five years of marriage. In the early 1860s, Guiteau was affiliated with the utopian Oneida Community in upstate New York. He returned to religion with renewed fervor in the late 1870s, styling himself a preacher and theologian, and publishing several sermons as well as The Truth: A Companion to the Bible, which was largely plagiarized from the writings of Oneida founder John Humphrey Noyes.

July 2, 1980: AIRPLANE! was released. "Don't Call Me Shirley!" To get the movie greenlit by Paramount Pictures, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker pitched it as "National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) on a plane" which of course, was far from the truth, but was the only way they could get the studio executives to understand it was a zany comedy.

The screens and computers in the control tower are components of an IBM AN/FSQ-7 Combat Direction Central, built in 1954 to protect the United States from Soviet bomber attack. It was used by the United States Air Force for ground-controlled interception as part of the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) network during the Cold War.

Components of decommissioned systems were sold for scrap and bought by film and television production companies who wanted futuristic looking computers, despite the fact they were built in the 1950s. The components used in this movie were previously used in The Time Tunnel (1966) and The Towering Inferno (1974) among many others. The AN/FSQ-7 was the largest discrete computer system ever built. Each of the 24 installed machines weighed 250 tons. It used a total of 60,000 vacuum tubes (49,000 in the computers) and up to 3 megawatts of electricity, performing about 75,000 instructions per second for networking regional radars.

The Darrow Chemical Company that manufactured 2-4-5 Trioxin in the film is based on the Dow Chemical Company, which in reality manufactured a chemical defoliant in the 1960s, commonly known as 'Agent Orange' (a 50:50 mix of 24d and 245t) and used to strip jungles in the Vietnam War. To avoid being sued by the Dow Chemical Company, the makers of Return of the Living Dead created the name "Darrow," which sounds a lot like Dow when pronounced but wasn't spelled the same.

The nuclear cannon at the end of the film was actually a WWII German Howitzer.

Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale fleshed the idea out into a story: a high school kid is thrown back in time; he meets his parents; his mother falls in love with him. They pitched the idea to Columbia Pictures president Frank Price, and he commissioned them to write a screenplay. They wrote a script and called it Back To The Future, but Columbia rejected it. Zemeckis and Gale showed the script to the Exec Producer of Used Cars – Steven Spielberg.  He said “It was unusual but based on principles like family and the generation gap. It was terrific.”

Spielberg wanted his production company, Amblin Entertainment, to make the film, but Zemeckis and Gale didn’t want to become known as the guys who only got jobs because they were friends with Steven Spielberg. Instead, they sent it round every studio in Hollywood. Columbia said it was “Too sweet.” Universal said “Time travel movies don’t make any money.”And Disney said it was “Too incestuous.” In total, the script for Back To The Future was rejected by studios 44 times.

Unable to sell the script, Zemeckis got a job directing Romancing The Stone. It was a big hit and suddenly, everybody wanted Back To The Future. Zemeckis/Gale took it back to the man who believed in it all along – Spielberg – and struck a distribution deal with Universal.

Fox worked on Family Ties and Back To The Future at the same time. He rehearsed for Family Ties from 8am to 6pm, then went to the Back to the Future set where he would rehearse and shoot until 3:30 a.m. This schedule lasted two months.

In casting the inventor of time travel, Doc Emmett Brown; John Lithgow, Dudley Moore, and Jeff Goldblum were all considered. Producer Neil Canton had worked with Christopher Lloyd on The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension and suggested him. They sent Lloyd the script but, with aspirations of being a serious actor, he threw it in the trash. Zemeckis met with Lloyd and impressed him when he explained his vision for the film. Lloyd then showed the script to friends who all advised him to take it, so he did.

Lloyd told Zemeckis he wanted to base the character on Albert Einstein and a conductor named Leopold Stokowski. Zemeckis liked the idea, and said to go ahead.

Crispin Glover had a reputation for being a little odd. One evening, Lea Thompson went to practice lines. When she got there, she found that all of the rooms were painted entirely black and there was no furniture in the whole apartment except for a steel operating table.

Thomas F. Wilson is school bully Biff Tannen. He improvised lines like "make like a tree and get outta here" and "butthead." Over the years he was asked the same questions by fans so often, he wrote a song that answered them all.

There were many script changes:
- Marty’s surname was originally McDermott
- The climax took place at a nuclear test site in Nevada (storyboards)
- The script ended with George looking at a 1955 newspaper with a pic of Marty and saying "It can’t be. But it is..."

Sid Sheinberg did not like the title Back To The Future and sent a memo to Zemeckis and Gale asking to change it to "Spaceman From Pluto." Luckily, Spielberg stepped in. He replied with a memo that said: "Thanks for your humorous memo. We all got a big kick out of it."

In original drafts the time machine was a room that Marty would go into and be zapped back in time. That changed to a 1950s refrigerator that Marty would climb into to go back in time. Zemeckis scrapped the idea when he worried about children climbing into refrigerators.

Zemeckis then had the idea of using a car as it meant the time machine could be mobile. He wanted something that looked futuristic and cool, so the DeLorean was brought in. After the movie came out, John DeLorean wrote Zemeckis a letter expressing his gratitude. The DeLorean time machine was designed by the acclaimed concept artist Ron Cobb and then brought to life by the effects team, headed by Kevin Pike.

Zemeckis hired Alan Silvestri (Romancing The Stone) as composer but Spielberg wasn’t convinced. He heard the orchestra warming up playing a big dramatic and said “that’s it! that’s what it needs to be!” and Zemeckis said, “yeah, that’s the main theme Alan sent us.”

Huey Lewis was asked by Zemeckis and Gale to write a song for the film but weren’t pleased with the first song. Lewis said, “We did this too, but it’s got nothing to do with time travel.” That was The Power of Love, and became a worldwide number 1 hit. Lewis himself has a cameo in the movie as the teacher who brings Marty’s Battle of the Bands audition to an abrupt end.

Music supervisor Bones Howe put out a casting call to find a singer who sounded like Michael J. Fox. Musician Mark Chapman saw the ad, won the part, and that’s who we hear singing Johnny B. Goode. Chapman has his own band, Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. Here he is singing Johnny B. Goode

The film made Michael J. Fox a movie sensation overnight, was nominated for 3 Oscars and raked in $389 million at the box-office, the highest-grossing movie of the year. Today it is regarded as a stone-cold classic.

Happy 249th Independence Day!

July 4th is also marked by the deaths of three founding fathers and early U.S. presidents: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe.
When Adams died on July 4, 1826, his last words were reported to be, “Thomas Jefferson survives.” Ironically, though Adams didn’t know it, Jefferson had died just hours earlier that same day, the 50th anniversary of American independence.

July 5, 1975: Otto Skorzeny, Nazi SS commando who agreed to work for the Mossad after the war, dies of lung cancer in Madrid, Spain. He was 67.

During WWII, Skorzeny was turned down for the Luftwaffe for being too tall; was severely wounded on the Eastern Front; parachuted into Iran to sabotage Allied shipping; led the raid to rescue Benito Mussolini from prison in 1943; attempted to kidnap Yugoslav Partisan leader Josip Broz Tito in Operation Knight's Move; led a mission to imitate American soldiers to spread confusion among Allied lines; and was personally decorated by Hitler many times. He never denounced Nazism, even when working for Mossad.

He was given a Catholic funeral in Madrid on August 7, 1975. His body was then cremated and his ashes were later taken to Vienna to be interred in the Skorzeny family plot at Döblinger Friedhof. His funerals in Madrid and Vienna were attended by both Mossad agents and former SS colleagues who gave the Nazi salute, and also sang some of Hitler's favorite songs. What a trip.

The prominent facial scar on his left cheek is not from war, but a result of dueling during his time in a German fraternity. This type of scar, known as a Mensur scar or bragging scar, was a badge of honor among fraternity members, symbolizing courage and a bond with their peers. Nazi Kurt H. Debus, 1st center director of NASA; later NASA UFO desk, had a very similar scar.

We are sure you will agree it is imperative to end the risk of accidental war from defense forces' confusion over UFO's. Defense personnel, not merely top-level groups, should be told that the UFO's are real and should be trained to
distinguish them - by their characteristic speeds and maneuvers - from conventional planes and missiles. This is not in effect today.

Second, the American people must be convinced, by documented facts, that the UFO's could not be Soviet machines.

July 6, 1975: Warren A. Klope shattered the world record for stone skipping after sending a flat rock that bounced 24 times along the waters of Lake Superior. Breaking the former world record of 21 skips, set by Carl Weiholdt of Denmark in 1957, Klope's mark was set at the annual International Stone Skipping Tournament at Mackinac Island, Michigan.

The Guinness World Record for the furthest distance skimmed using natural stone stands at 121.8m for men, established by Dougie Isaacs (Scotland), and 52.5m for women, thrown by Nina Luginbuhl (Switzerland). These records were made on 28 May 2018 at Abernant Lake, Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, Wales.

Fun fact: “stone-skipping” is called different phrases in different languages.

In Czech it’s called “throwing froggies” (dělat žabky).

In Danish it’s called “slipping” (smut).

In Finnish it’s called “throwing sandwiches” (heittää voileipiä).

In Hungarian it’s called “making it walk like a duck” (kacsáztatás).

In Mongolian it’s called “making the dog lick.”

In Ukrainian it’s called “letting your frogs out.”

In Farsi it’s called “bashing Syrians.”

Kurt "The Mountain Man" Steiner holds the world record with "88" skips

It is impossible to go beyond "88" as the stone skips back in time and lost forever.

Since the beginning of the Earth 4.5 billion years ago, Mother Nature has adapted to climate changes. And since the dawn of humanity, we have too.

So why do we, the most powerful civilization ever seen, delude ourselves that a few hotter summer days is a catastrophe that we can't possiby handle? Some of the hottest days ever recorded within the US were in the 1930s...And we're still here, now with air conditioning.

When will the world get to NetZero?

Never. (at least ya better pray we don't, ever)

In the meantime, NetZero is economic suicide.

When will the world start decreasing emissions?

Not within the foreseeable future.

If so, then it seems climate change is inevitable.

We should stop the futile fighting about it and adapt to it instead.

Quote:FOR many years BP have published an annual review of global energy markets. This year the job has been taken over by the Energy Institute, but the analysis of production and consumption of energy by country remains the same.

The latest review published last week confirms what we have known for a long time. Net Zero is further away than ever in the world as a whole. These are the highlights:

- Emissions of CO2 are up by 1.2 per cent in 2024 from the year before;
- Total energy consumption rose by 2.1 per cent;
- Fossil fuel use rose by 1.5 per cent, with its share of total energy dropping only slightly from 87.0 per cent to 86.6 per cent;
- Wind and solar power share barely rose at all – from 2.5 per cent to 2.8 per cent;
- In absolute terms, wind and solar increased by 2.3 exajoules, while fossil fuels went up by 7.6 exajoules between 2023 and 2024.

In other words, despite the trillions invested in renewable energy in recent years, the growth in output last year met only a quarter of the world’s increasing appetite for energy.

The chart below of CO2 emissions shows just what an irrelevant sideshow the richer OECD countries have now become:

While we in the West struggle to pare back emissions at a huge cost to our economies, the developing world, which includes China and India, have been carrying on with business as usual. Since the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, their annual emissions have increased by 20 per cent.

We all know that China continues to use more and more fossil fuels. Despite the misinformation regularly put out by the legacy media, wind and solar power in that country still sits at only 4 per cent of total energy consumption.

It is exactly the same story in the rest of the developing world. They have the sense to realise that only fossil fuels can provide the energy they need to build their economies and give their citizens the standard of living they deserve.

BBC misinformation

I COULD not resist googling ‘BBC China Renewables’! I used the ‘past year’ filter. You would be forgiven for not believing, having read this lot, that China gets only 4 per cent of its energy from wind and solar, a third less than we do here in the UK!

The climate scaremongers: Net Zero is further away than ever

Sir Keir Starmer & his energy secretary Edward Miliband and the Taliban attended the Cop29 climate summit last Novemeber making their own contribution to 'Net Zero' by flying 2,500 miles to what they imagined was a 'bigwig' climate conference. But they were the only bigwigs who arrived. All the others stood them up. And they flew a lonely 2,500 miles home again. Not even the EU queen Ursula von der Leyen bothered to attend.

I suppose a climate conference is ideal territory for Starmer. It is based on words and promises that produce documents promising Change and nothing happens. That is home territory for Sir K. So much better than messy Parliament.

They should hold the next COP climate conference at the South Pole - to show how fast it's melting? LOL. OOps, it does not fit the narrative.

In 2008 Ed Miliband vowed we would 'Lead the World' by reducing carbon emissions. And they'd all follow our virtuous example!

So what happened?

UK is down 44%. But the World is UP 18%.

Nobody really cares about emissions.

"So what happened?"

This is what happened - all thanks to Ed Miliband.

Besotted with the barmy thoughts of a perpetual pre-pubescent doom goblin.

Quote:Ed "Big Daddy" Roth (March 4, 1932 – April 4, 2001) was a trailblazer in the world of custom car design and a key figure in Southern California's Kustom Kulture movement. Born in Beverly Hills, California, Roth developed a passion for automobiles from a young age. His journey into the automotive world began when he acquired his first car, a 1933 Ford coupe, at the age of 14. This early interest in cars led him to study engineering and later serve in the United States Air Force.

Roth's career as an artist, cartoonist, and illustrator paved the way for his iconic status in the hot rod and custom car scene of the late 1950s and 1960s. He gained widespread recognition for his grotesque caricatures, notably the Rat Fink character, which became synonymous with the rebellious spirit of the era.

RE: Meme Scholar with Madness (PhD) - EndtheMadnessNow - 07-10-2025

July 1936: The U.S. is sweltering. The July 1936 heat wave was one of the most intense and deadly heat waves in US history, particularly impacting the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. It was a period of extreme high temperatures and drought conditions, contributing to the Dust Bowl era.

The heat wave of 1936 that broke all records in 15 states during July and August was the final blow to many midwestern farmers who had fought against economic hardship and hellfire heat and drought.

Central Park in New York City hit 106°F on July 9. New York City, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia declared public beaches open all night for the duration, promising not to arrest anyone. City swimming pools lengthened their hours.

Nationally, an estimated 5,000 people died from the heat, or U.S. Department of Commerce lists 4,678 deaths attributed to excessive heat, or the international disasters database EM-DAT lists 1,693 deaths for US & Canada. Nobody really knows other than a lot of people died due to excessive heat. The heat was accentuated due to a prolonged drought that was affecting the region, and poor farming methods which left little vegetation to help mitigate the hot temperatures. In Illinois, many locations saw peak temperatures in excess of 110 degrees at the height of the heat wave, and 121 degrees as far north as Steele, North Dakota with all-time high temperature records established during this period.

July and August 1936, as chronicled in detail by extreme weather historian Christopher Burt in a 2018 write-up at Weather Underground.

As Burt put it:

"All in all, nothing comparable to the heat wave(s) of the summer of 1936 has before or since occurred in the contiguous U.S. It is hard to imagine how people fared without home air conditioning, although there were some rudimentary forms available, such as swamp coolers. Movie theaters were one of the few places where air conditioning provided at least some temporary relief."

Note: swamp coolers only work where the humidity is very low. Although it's better than nothing. Very few had the luxury of air conditioning.

In 2015, researchers at the University of New South Wales in Australia determined that the 1936 heat wave was born of the ocean: specifically, high surface sea temperatures. Areas of the Pacific from the Gulf of Alaska to Los Angeles had warmed in tandem with the Bay of Fundy between Maine and Nova Scotia.
“Together they reduced spring rainfall and created perfect conditions for scorching hot temperatures to develop in the heart of the U.S.,” noted Markus Donat of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science.

July 9, 1982: TRON was released. A groundbreaking blend of concept and digital effects, and a film that launched the career of actor Jeff Bridges, the story of how it came to be is as thrilling as a Light Cycle...

In 1976, animator Steven Lisberger came across the now-classic Atari video game Pong, and couldn’t stop playing it. Fascinated by the idea of computer-generated graphics, he had the idea for a movie set entirely within a digital-based world. Lisberger Studios created a 30-second showreel animation of a character called Tron and, after having a hit with animation Animalympics, Lisberger used the profits to develop Tron into an idea for a full-blown animated movie with co-producer Donald Kushner.

Development of Tron was mentioned in Variety, catching the attention of computer scientist Alan Kay. He got in touch with Lisberger and Kushner, offered his services as consultant, and convinced the two men to use real CGI instead of hand-drawn animations.

Lisberg and Kushner pitched their groundbreaking idea round Hollywood and, after being turned down by MGM and Columbia, Disney invested in a test reel. Impressed with what they saw, Disney greenlit Tron with Lisberger as director and a $17m budget.

Computer programmer Bonnie MacBird worked at Lisberger Studios and had experience in film, having worked as a story executive at Universal Pictures. As such, Lisberger hired her to pen the screenplay for Tron. She wrote a few drafts, and it was finished by Lisberger.

MacBird did make some major contributions, like fleshing out the title character and introducing religious themes. And she went on to marry Alan Kay, after they met on the film. MacBird’s first choice for the lead, video game developer Kevin Flynn, was Robin Williams. Lisberger felt him too comedic and instead cast Thunderbolt and Lightfoot star Jeff Bridges in the role.

Acting legend Peter O’Toole was approached to play ENCOM VP Dillnger/Sark, but insisted he wanted to play Tron. In a meeting with Lisberger, O’Toole reportedly stood on a chair and shouted "I can do this!" He said he wanted Tron on his tombstone next to Lawrence of Arabia. Instead, Lisberger turned to RSC-trained David Warner to play the part of Dillinger/Sark, and Bruce Boxleitner (best known for TV hit How The West was won) as Tron/Alan Bradley.

In casting the main female role of Dr Lora Baines/Yori, many actresses auditioned. The most well-known was Blondie singer Debbie Harry, but young American actress Cindy Morgan was hired, being cast just days before production began.

TRON is a debugging command in old dialects of the BASIC programming language. It is an abbreviation of TRace ON. This lead to speculation that is where the title of the film came from. Lisberger said that wasn’t the case, it was merely a shortening of "electronic." Despite its futuristic theme, Lisberger also took inspiration from classic literature. He based some of the narrative beats on Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.

The character name Alan Bradley was based on real life. Allen-Bradley was a company that created factory automation equipment founded in 1903. It was purchased by Rockwell Automation after the film came out.

The cyberspace scenes were filmed in black and white, and the colour manually composited on top afterwards using rotoscoping. Due to the darkened set, Bridges set he felt "bombarded by color" every time he left the soundstage. The actors’ costumes were completely white with black lines drawn on them. This was done to allow the colour to be manually rotoscoped (drawn) on them afterwards.

Almost every shot in the film where we see an actor against a CGI background is static. This is because the technology did not yet exist to adapt the background’s perspective while the camera moved. Often the tripods were nailed to the floor. To make up for this, Lisberger and Director of Photography Bruce Logan made sure to have a lot of animation in the shots that were all CGI. Lisberger called it "a cornucopia of camera movement."

Lisberger wanted British rock group Supertramp to work on the score, but they were unavailable. Instead, Wendy Carlos (famous for her synthesised scores on Stanley Kubrick films) was brought in. Carlos' music was recorded using the Moog modular synthesizer. This was the same instrument she used on her groundbreaking Switched-On Bach album from 1968, and her score for A Clockwork Orange.

Sound designer Frank Serafine processed noises through a Fairlight digital synthesizer to make electronic sounds. The Master Control Program rumble came from Lisberger’s cat purring. And screeching monkeys were used for the noise of the Identity Discs.

When Disney first greenlit the film, many of their in-house animators refused to work on it, fearing that computers would eventually put them out of work. That wasn’t the case entirely, but CGI certainly reduced the number of hand animators employed by Hollywood. Instead of animators, Lisberger had to find other means to design the film. He brought in famed concept artist Syd Mead and French artist Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud to work on costumes, storyboards, and other design work.

Moebius moved to L.A. for three months to work on the film and was mostly given free design reign. He designed Yori’s head cover and, though it gave Cindy Morgan blisters, she said “who's going to question Moebius?”

The famous glow of the costumes was achieved through backlight animation. The shot was photographed normally, then the black lines made transparent. Finally, a light source was shone through the transparent elements, creating the effect.

Four animation studios worked on the film: Magi Synthavision, Digital Effects Inc., Information International, Inc., and Robert Abel and Associates. A TV monitor was set up with a telephone wire, meaning Lisberger could see what they produced – and give feedback – in minutes.

The technology was state-of-the-art for the time. To put it in perspective though, the main computer used for rendering the movie’s digital effects had 2MB of memory and 330MB of storage. Roughly 75,000 frames were used in the animation/compositing process, an astronomical number back then. In the end, there were 1100 special effects shots in the film, 900 involving actors interacting with the digital environment.

One of the famous visuals is the flicker we sometimes see, making it look like the world is glitching. This wasn’t intentional, it was caused by film speeds being used inconsistently. Lisberger ended up adding more to make it seem like it was done on purpose.

In the first act, we see Flynn playing the game he invented – Space Paranoids. The game looks very much like games generated by 3-D graphics engines, even though these wouldn’t be invented for another 10 years.

The programmers' cubicles at ENCOM were filmed with the programmers’ cubicles in the Walt Disney Technology Group. A matte painting was added to make the area look a lot bigger than it actually was.

The moment after RAM’s death, Tron appears from between two walls covered in circuitry. Ather than creating circuits, the walls were covered in the Allies’ World War II reconnaissance shots of Dresden, Germany.

Lisberger didn’t want the film to include violent imagery, which is why characters throw flying discs at one another. The discs were actually frisbees, which animators rotoscoped. And Lisberger hired Frisbee champion Sam Schatz to train the actors.

The light cycles were mostly computer-generated elements. The back of each bike is noticeably less curved than the front. This is because it reduced the power needed to render them. Because the technology of the time could only generate static images, the light cycles had to be moved for each individual frame by entering coordinates. 600 coordinates were needed for 4 seconds of film. This had to be done by hand.

The security door where Flynn, Alan, and Lora sneak into ENCOM is a real radiation door at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California. When carrying out research for the film, Lisberger toured the laboratory and, when he saw the door, wrote it into the film. The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory housed the largest laser in the world at the time, and the laser sequences for the film were all shot there. According to reports, no other movie has been allowed to film there since.

At the time Tron was released, Head of Advertising at Disney was Cardon Walker. He apparently (and bizarrely) didn’t believe in marketing. Where Universal pumped $10m into marketing for E.T. the same year, Tron was given a very small $500,000 budget. As a result, the film underperformed at the box office. On its initial run in 1982, Tron took under $50m at the box office, and some of its $17m budget was written off. Disney released the film again in 1983, and it again under-performed.

The film seemed like a surefire winner for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars, but was disqualified from being nominated. Instead, E.T. won the statue, and Lisberger later said "The Academy thought we cheated by using computers."

Finally… Disney weren’t bowled over by the box office response, but video games based on Tron fared better. Tomy released a handheld arcade game called Space Turbo in 1985. It was inspired by Tron’s light cycles, and was a huge hit at the time.

To be fair to Charles this was a lot of money in the late 1960s when he was probably earning around $150/day to help the CIA and ARPA strategize how to eliminate troublesome Thai citizens. Take note of the "C. A. Murray" at the bottom of the AIR Advisory Panel in the second screenshot below.

AIR is an acronym for the American Institutes for Research, a CIA contractor in that period. They published a white paper in 1967 in which they argued the U.S. must "interdict the flow of competing inputs," aka "assassinating key spokesmen."

The highest temperature ever recorded in North America was measured at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley, CA on July 10, 1913 at 134°F.

Death Valley’s heat record, set in 1913 at 134 degrees, comes under fire

In 2016, California climatologist William Reid studied the record and deemed it bogus and he’s got decades of exhaustive research to back him up.

Hottest I ever seen at this spot was 129 in 2017. I went for a short hike in the oven. Seen lots of unprepared tourists pass out. I had a few beers while watching them flop around wearing flip-flops.

Welp, that heat claimed at least one person and he was a desert expert!

July 10, 1913: (Tonopah Daily Bonanza) Pete Busch Dies Exhausted In Death Valley; Warned by Death Valley Scotty
"I'm going to cross the desert or die in the attempt," one of the best known men in the southern country & recognized as an authority on the perils of Death Valley.
He died.

Unlike poor Pete Busch who attempted to cross the unmerciful desert on the hottest day ever which I'm sure he did not know, these insane marathon runners cross the desert and BEYOND annually during the hottest summer days.

Welcome to the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon which just finished. The most brutal foot race on planet Earth.

Covering 135 miles (217km) non-stop from Death Valley* to Mt. Whitney, CA, the Badwater 135 is the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet, as well as the 135-Mile World Championship. The start line is at Badwater Basin, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in North America at 280’ (85m) below sea level. The race finishes at Whitney Portal at 8,300’ (2530m), which is the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States.** The Badwater 135 course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 14,600’ (4450m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 6,100’ (1859m) of cumulative descent. Competitors travel through places or landmarks with names like Mushroom Rock, Furnace Creek, Salt Creek, Devil’s Cornfield, Devil’s Golf Course, Stovepipe Wells, Panamint Springs, Darwin, Keeler, Lone Pine, Alabama Hills, and the Sierra Nevada.

I happened to be out here one July when this crazy race was ongoing and the runners looked like sun drenched exhausted parched skeletons that would of impressed the grim reaper. Discovered their medic teams that cruise alongside them had bought all the ice from EVERY pit stop store/gas station in Death Valley. Damn, I was pissed until I met this saloon girl who had a secret stash of ice in the backroom. I gave her a big tip and went on my way with a cooler full of ice cold beer.

Prolong exposure & stress in 120+F temps causes your internal organs to start decomposing. Super fit folks usually recover but some internal organ damage remains permanent for life.

However, getting accepted into this race is also eXtremely challenging. Basically you have to be a Viking, dedicate or sacrifice your LIFE to getting in the Badwater madness club. No joke.

Quote:Entry into Badwater is by invitation only, with an application that requires strict qualifying requirements, and extensive details about a runner’s racing history and personal life. A maximum of 100 people will be accepted into Badwater each year which includes a 50/50 split of rookies and Badwater veterans. Organisers look to represent runners from 20 countries, plus 20 to 25 American states, making entry spots all the more competitive.

One man that can attest to this is 31-year-old Rhys Jenkins. After his first application was rejected in 2016, it has taken him 10 years to craft his running résumé to impress the committee. Finally on July 17, 2019, Rhys became the first Welshman to take part, finishing 57th out of 79 runners.

1986 recruiting ad for the Navy's "It's not just a job, it's an adventure" campaign. Even though the campaign heavily featured ships, sailors, and Navy aircraft, studies revealed that the target audience of young men associated the slogan with the Army. LOL.

The Feds have had six years to "fix" the Epstein story and get it just right for the public, and nobody’s buying it. Even the MAGA base smell a rat (or twenty). Just goes to show the Warren Commission is still the MVP: signed, sealed, delivered in less than a year. The cover-up GOAT. The Warren Report only had to stand up til November 3, 1964. The 26 volumes of hearings and evidence were held back til nearly three weeks after the election.

July 11, 1957: The Mint Hotel and Casino opened at 100 Fremont St in downtown Las Vegas, NV.

The Mint is another one of the hotel casinos from Las Vegas's bygone era.  Situated on Fremont Street, most may recall its location as being the home to Binion's Hotel which acquired it after The Mint's closure in 1988. The hotel would eventually close in 2009, a victim of the late 2000's recession.

Opening in 1957, The Mint was another development for Milton Prell whose properties included Club Bingo (1947) which was later remodeled as the Sahara. Prell's involvement would be short-lived as he sold the properties to Del Webb. The following year, plans were underway to build a 22-story hotel tower at a cost of $5 million. By the time of its completion in 1965, the hotel tower was 25 floors and ranked just behind The Landmark as the tallest building in Nevada.

Milton Prell as owner of the Sahara Las Vegas built The Mint Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas in 1957. Sam Boyd purchased a 3% stake in The Mint.

Today, The Mint is arguably remembered most for being part of the setting in Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas which immortalized Thompson's legendary weekend trip in 1971.

The casino appears in the 1964 film "Viva Las Vegas" and in the 1971 Bond film "Diamonds Are Forever." Shortly before its closure, The Mint was filmed in U2's music video "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

Two Norwegian F-16s collided over Rachel, Nevada in the Rachel Playground on July 10, 1986. One plane #684 crashed 75 yards from the trailer park, the pilot safely ejected. An Air Force helicopter arrived in 18 minutes to take the Norwegian pilot back to base.

Quote:The pilot had ejected safely before the crash, and the other jet made it back to Nellis Air Force Base. Needless to say, there was a lot of activity in town following the crash. Residents converged on the area with shovels and garden hoses to keep the grass fires from spreading to the trailers. Jeff Fallis saw the pilot come down in his parachute near the old mill across the highway, and he drove out in his pickup truck to pick him up. As Fallis approached, the pilot held up his hands and said, "I didn't mean to!" Apart from some bruises, the pilot was unharmed.

An Air Force helicopter arrived within 18 minutes of the crash to take him away, and that was the last folks saw of him, although La Rae and Edith later exchanged letters with him. The area of the crash was cordoned off, and the fire in the plane was allowed to burn itself out. Residents were evacuated to the bar (then known as the Stage Stop Saloon & Kitchen) to protect them from the fumes. The next day, a military clean-up crew combed the desert for debris, and the day after that, the wreckage was trucked away on a big flatbed, leaving only a burn mark to indicate where the crash had been.

No one seemed to blame the Air Force for the nearly disastrous event, and the recovery soon turned into a social occasion. Rachel residents prepared a picnic for the clean-up crew on the front lawn of Ralph and Edith Grover. A month and a half later, on Aug. 28, everyone who participated in the recovery was invited back to Rachel for a barbecue. Although the pilot could not be there, he sent a letter of thanks.

The Norwegian Air Force and the pilot sent the town a molded crest, patches, photos, a small Viking ship and letters of commendation, including this one that came with the crest.
