March 26, 1902: Cecil Rhodes died at age 48. He gained a fortune in diamond mining and founded Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Rhodes scholarships at Oxford are funded from one of his Will's. He was so wealthy he left 5 or 6 separate Wills. Recently there has been a student campaign in Oxford to remove his statue for "white supremacist views". He was but so what, them were different times. His dream was to conquer America (diplomatically) and bring her back under England.

March 26, 1937: Spinach growers in Crystal City, Texas, USA, erected a statue of Popeye. At the time Crystal City produced 10,000 cans of Spinach a day thanks to the cartoon character Popeye the Sailor Man and called itself “World Spinach Capital”. Today is National Spinach Day.

March 26, 1997: A tragic event, and an example of what can go wrong with UFO zealots. Rancho Santa Fe, CA: Two deputies find 39 bodies of identically dressed, androgynous-looking men and women. Autopsies establish that each had drunk a lethal combination of vodka and barbiturates then smothered themselves with a plastic bag.

Videotaped statements left behind explain that the suicides, members of a religious millenarian cult called Heaven’s Gate, were leaving their “earthly vehicles” behind and expect to board a spacecraft trailing Comet Hale-Bopp. It was founded in 1974 and led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles (formerly called Bo and Peep).

The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer announced today that four Royal Navy warships will be fitted with DragonFire laser directed energy weapons by 2027 as part of a £2.2 ($2.8) billion boost to defense spending. The energy needed to fire the DragonFire costs about $10 a shot. Looks impressive:

March 27, 1794: President George Washington signed the 1794 "Act to Provide a Naval Armament" which allowed for the construction of the original six frigates of the US Navy.

Of the six original frigates, only USS Constitution remains and is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat and the world’s oldest sailing vessel still capable of sailing under its own power.

March 27, 1854: The British government, supported by France, Sardinia and the Ottoman Empire, declared war on Tsarist Russia in a conflict that became known as the Crimean War. Britain and France were unwilling to allow Russia to gain territory at expense of the Ottoman Empire. In total, over 500,000 died in the 2.5 year war and all cases, death by disease exceeded the sum of "killed in action" or "died of wounds".

Some members of the Russian intelligentsia saw defeat as a pressure to modernize their society. Grand Duke Constantine, a son of the Tsar, remarked:

"We cannot deceive ourselves any longer; we must say that we are both weaker and poorer than the first-class powers, and furthermore poorer not only in material terms but in mental resources, especially in matters of administration."

March 27, 1943: HMS Dasher (D37), a British Royal Navy Avenger class aircraft carrier sank after an internal explosion. The death toll of 379 out of 528 crew, was one the highest in British home waters. The British blamed the bad design of the stowage and handling, while the US blamed the disaster on poor RN petrol-handling procedures.

The government of the time, eager to avoid damage to morale and anxious to avoid any suggestion of faulty American construction, tried to cover up the sinking. For two years the local media were ordered by the gov't to make no reference to the tragedy. Decades later, controversy still surrounds the incident because the cause of the explosion has never been determined, and there have been allegations that the recovered bodies of crewmen were secretly buried in mass graves.

Dasher was built by the Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Chester, Pennsylvania. The ship was originally named Rio de Janeiro, intended for passenger/cargo service with Moore-McCormack Lines. She was converted to an escort aircraft carrier in the Tietjen & Lang shipyards New Jersey and commissioned into the Royal Navy on July 2, 1942 under the ‘Lend Lease’ scheme.

USS Constellation.  What a savvy smart looking design.  Bit of a navy theme going on throughout.  Like it.

HMS Dasher.  Tragic for those on board.  My thoughts are an ammunition explosion caused by the 250 lb or 500 lb bombs below the lift.  Bomb booster and/or fuse contacted within the hanger space setting off a massive chain reaction.  Possibly caused by a failure to secure the bomb loads after de-ammunitioning the aircraft.

Ship movement in swell.  Bomb stowage and trolley stowage poorly contained.  Movement causes an object, albeit a trolley handle contacting a booster or fuse.  Just one of those mothers going off would be enough to set all aircraft and munitions ablaze.

Kind regards,

Quote:Putin issues Arctic warning to NATO

The US-led NATO bloc views the Arctic as a “bridgehead” for future conflicts and is actively training troops to operate in the far north, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Speaking at the International Arctic Forum in Murmansk on Thursday, he stated that Russia would do its best to uphold its national interests and sovereignty in the region.

The number of Russian forces deployed in the Arctic is bound to grow to meet the growing challenges there, Putin said.

“We are, of course, concerned by the fact that NATO countries as a whole are more frequently designating the far north as a bridgehead for possible conflicts, practicing the use of troops in these conditions, including their new recruits from Finland and Sweden,” he declared.

Moscow has been “closely monitoring” the situation in the region, and has taken “an adequate response approach by increasing the combat capabilities of the armed forces and modernizing military infrastructure facilities,” the president explained.

“I would like to emphasize that Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic,” he said, adding that Russia will not tolerate any encroachments on its sovereignty and will “reliably protect” its national interests.

Putin has said US President Donald Trump's plans to take control of Greenland are "serious."

Putin has expressed concerns regarding increasing geopolitical competition in the Arctic, particularly in light of U.S. intentions toward Greenland. Speaking at an Arctic forum in Murmansk, Putin noted that U.S. interest in Greenland has historical roots, referencing past American attempts to acquire the territory. He emphasized that the U.S. is likely to continue advancing its geopolitical, military, and economic interests in the Arctic region.

Putin highlighted Russia’s apprehension about NATO countries viewing the Far North as a potential zone for future conflicts. He stated that Russia would respond by bolstering its military capabilities in the Arctic to safeguard its sovereignty and national interests.

Clip of 1929’s "High Treason" takes us to the hi-tech future of 1940.

Sci-fi film about women who unite to prevent financiers from engineering a second world war. A glimpse into the future. An imaginative, thrilling, romantic story of life and love in 1940. New York and London bombed from the air. Giant battle cruisers of the skies raining destruction upon earth. Passenger trains blown up in a tunnel under English channel. Marvels of science that would tax the ingenuity of a Jules Verne. (Print Ad-Hepner Gazette-times, Hepner, Oregon; 29 May 1930). The pistols used by both sides are Mauser C96 pistols.

Made in separate silent and sound versions. While a mute negative of the sound version had been kept by the UK National Film Archive since 1981, it was thought that all sound elements were lost. However, a 35mm fine-grain nitrate print of the sound version was found in 2005 on Vashon Island, WA, by the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association and was preserved by the US Library of Congress.

Spot the shimmer. First, recognize what your Unique Butterfly is.

“Anaxia” is a mythic underworld, the likes of which haven’t been seen in a cinema since the surreal, 80s-infused dustbowls of Conan the Barbarian and Dune. In the dark world of Oskexis, The Golden Mystic (Eleonore Toulin) hunts the rogue Oskexian Pixies (Misha and Shaya Keyvanfar), for a rare elixir stolen from her master, Lord Cabirio (Bruno Toulin). The pixies are like the daughters of Xena and Hercules; toying with their male overlords, their spells cast in neon blasts like an old Sega machine, shimmering in and out of view.

March 29, 1975: U.S. Senator from Arizona Barry Goldwater announces that he has visited Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio in an attempt to find UFOs hidden there, but that Air Force officials prevented him from entering one particular building. Goldwater says that he is convinced that the U.S. government is hiding UFOs.

It should be noted that Goldwater was a Major General in the U.S. Air Force Reserve until 1967.

Quote:Barry Goldwater and Curtis LeMay

I thought that I would expand on this disagreement about what Barry Goldwater (seen here)knew and what he said about UFOs and the possibility of a crash outside of Roswell. I published a copy of the letter that Goldwater had sent to Kent Jeffrey in which Goldwater mentioned the Roswell case. Skeptics believe, and I’m not sure they’re incorrect, that Goldwater assumed that the Roswell debris was housed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base but he didn’t know.

Let me take a moment to explain that. Kent’s letter was from 1994, after Roswell had entered the national psyche. Jeffrey had asked about the Roswell case, so we can draw no specific conclusion from this, other than the answer might have been tainted by either the information in general circulation or by the specific questions asked by Jeffrey.

To continue in that vein, we know that in 1994, in an interview conducted by Larry King and broadcast on CNN, Goldwater said, "I think at Wright-Patterson, if you could get into certain places, you’d find out what the Air Force and the government does know about UFOs. Reportedly, a spaceship landed. It was all hushed up. I called Curtis LeMay and I said, ‘General, I know we have a room at Wright-Patterson where you put all this secret stuff. Could I go in there?’ I’ve never heard General LeMay get mad, but he got madder than hell at me, cussed me out, and said, ‘Don’t ever ask me that question again!’

While this quote does little to confirm the crash at Roswell, and it was conducted in 1994, it does establish that Goldwater asked LeMay about the "Blue Room" as it has come to be known, and that LeMay "cussed him out." Remember, some skeptics (okay, CDA specifically), had questioned this part of the story.

So, it proves that LeMay was capable of "cussing out" a friend and a United States senator. This would suggest that the topic discussed, and here we know that it was UFOs and the "landing" of a spaceship. This would suggest that there was a point that friendship ended and LeMay was talking to Goldwater as a superior officer to a subordinate.

There is another quote, this one from the April 25, 1988 issue of the New Yorker, that is also interesting because it predates the explosion of Roswell information. True, Charles Berlitz and Bill Moore’s The Roswell Incident had been published, but its circulation was limited to those interested in UFOs and its importance to the outside world was confined to UFO enthusiasts.

That doesn’t mean that there couldn’t have been contamination, just that it isn’t as easy to establish. In the New Yorker magazine, Goldwater is reported to have said, "I used to receive a hundred calls a year from people who wanted me to get into the Green Room [clearly he means the Blue Room] at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, because that's where the Air Force stored all the material gathered on UFOs. I once asked Curtis LeMay (seen here) if I could get in that room, and he just gave me holy hell. He said, 'Not only can't you get into it but don't you ever mention it to me again.'"

In a web search I did find a couple of spots where it was reported that Goldwater had said that when he asked LeMay he was told, "Not only no but hell no. And if you ever ask again I’ll have you court martialed." I was unable to establish an original source for this, but I remember seeing it printed in one of the tabloids.

Yes, I know that’s not a good source, but they published a copy of the letter in which Goldwater made the statement. I have not found my copy of that. I saw it a number of years ago.

So, where does this leave us? Well, we have multiple sources which quote Goldwater (including letters he wrote himself) referring to the Roswell case specifically and to a UFO landing generally. We have him talking about it being highly classified, so high classified in fact that he could not gain access as either a United States senator or an Air Force major general. And he confirmed in those sources (I’m thinking the New Yorker and the Larry King broadcast would be hard to dispute) that LeMay cussed him out.

The only thing we can’t establish is if this referred to the Roswell UFO crash. It certainly suggests that there are some highly classified secrets out there that deal with UFOs and some sort of physical evidence from them. It also opens the door for the Roswell case... Goldwater did use Roswell in his later communications.

We also see some of the interesting dynamics at work here. LeMay, as a general (meaning four stars) read the Riot Act to his subordinate, a major general (meaning two stars). He made it clear that the major general would not be allowed to refer the material. Friendship, on this point, did not matter.

Had Goldwater attempted to do an end run by using his power as a senator, he would have had no more luck than he had as a major general. Powerful though he was as a senator, that simply didn’t open the door into this highly classified arena. Goldwater had the grace, and the intelligence, not to push it farther. He knew that was important enough to be kept secret and the moment that one senator was brought in, then others would want to know and at that point the secret was out.

Contrary to what the skeptics say, the situation has been established with a proper documented record. We know the story of Goldwater and LeMay is true, and, according to Goldwater, it concerned UFOs. What we don’t know is if it related directly to Roswell. I suspect it does, and Goldwater suspected it did, but that just doesn’t get us to the end.

March 29, 1975: Jewish-American mobster Shondor Birns is assassinated in a car bombing in Lakewood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Astoundingly, despite losing both legs and incurring severe burns all over his body, Birns lived for about an hour after the explosion. The bomb containing C-4, caused Birns to be blown several feet through the roof of the car and his torso landed near the passenger door.

His severed legs landed 50 feet away and other smaller parts of him were scattered all over the place. A chain link fence between Christy's Lounge and St. Malachi Church caught many of the smaller fragments of flesh and bone. At first glance, they resembled steaming pieces of meat. What an epic gory scene that must have been.

Greene was a true Irish badass. After the Waterloo Road bombing failed to kill him, Greene played up the stories of the Mafia's failed assassination attempts to his benefit. His bravado and flamboyant behaviour only added to his growing aura of invincibility and power in the urban legends of the Cleveland criminal underworld. Greene granted interviews to local television stations; for a newspaper photographer, posed proudly in front of a boarded-up window of his destroyed apartment building; and during a televised interview said to one television reporter:

The luck of the Irish is with me and I have a message for those yellow maggots. That includes the payers and the doers. The doers are the people who carried out the bombing. They have to be eliminated because the people who paid them can't afford to have them remain alive. And the payers are going to feel great heat from the FBI and the local authorities ... And let me clear something else up. I didn't run away from the explosion. Someone said they saw me running away. I walked away.

The luck of the Irish ran out. Police suspected hitman Danny Greene planted the bomb that killed Birns however, he too was later killed by a car bomb planted by Los Angeles crime family enforcers Ray Ferritto and Ronald "Ronnie the crab" Carabbia. Greene was a US Marine in the early 50s and taught Marines how to be artillerymen. Greene & his second wife had five children. His son Daniel Kelly is currently serving as a city councilman for the city of Cleveland.

"I have told you that the spirits of darkness are going to inspire their human hosts, in whom they will be dwelling, to find a vaccine that will drive all inclination towards spirituality out of people's souls when they are still very young, and this will happen in a roundabout way through the living body. Today, bodies are vaccinated against one thing and another; in future, children will be vaccinated with a substance which it will certainly be possible to produce, and this will make them immune, so that they do not develop foolish inclinations connected with spiritual life—‘foolish’ here, of course, in the eyes of materialists."

March 30, 2025: A view of the final moments of Spectrum Flight 1 from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway.

Quote:Spectrum Rocket’s First Orbital Attempt Ends in Controlled Crash

March 30, 2025, Isar Aerospace‘s highly anticipated first orbital launch of its Spectrum rocket ended in failure on March 30th, as the vehicle lost attitude control and crashed back to Earth approximately 30 seconds after liftoff. Despite the dramatic end to the launch, the German space startup declared the mission, dubbed “Going Full Spectrum,” a success, citing the valuable data gathered during the brief flight.

“Our first test flight met all our expectations, achieving a great success. We had a clean liftoff, 30 seconds of flight and even got to validate our Flight Termination System.” said Daniel Metzler, CEO and Co-founder of Isar Aerospace. “Now it’s time to analyze all data, learn, iterate and be back on the launch pad as soon as possible.”

The Spectrum rocket, designed to be a cost-effective and flexible launch vehicle for small and medium-sized satellites, lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway at 6:30 a.m. Eastern. This launch marked a significant milestone, representing the first orbital launch attempt by a commercial entity from continental Europe outside of Russia. The rocket, powered by nine in-house developed Aquila engines using liquid oxygen and propane, aims to offer competitive launch services to the growing small satellite market. Isar Aerospace’s strategy focuses on a modular design and streamlined production to reduce launch costs and increase launch cadence.

The initial ascent appeared nominal, but approximately 25 seconds into the flight, the rocket began to exhibit instability. Shortly after the launch webcast announcer mentioned the planned pitchover maneuver, the vehicle started to tumble. Within five seconds, the rocket completely lost control and descended rapidly, impacting the ground near the launch pad and resulting in an explosion. Isar Aerospace executives later confirmed that the flight termination system was activated at the 30-second mark, leading to a controlled descent into a designated area in the sea.

While the loss of the vehicle is a setback, Isar Aerospace emphasized the successful achievement of its test objectives.  The company highlighted the collection of crucial flight data, which will be used to analyze the cause of the failure and improve the Spectrum rocket’s design for future missions. An investigation involving Isar Aerospace, Andøya Spaceport, and Norwegian regulators is now underway to determine the root cause of the anomaly. The launch pad itself sustained minimal damage. Isar Aerospace remains optimistic about its future launch attempts and its position within the growing European space sector.

These events underscore the challenges of space exploration. Another German rocket system, the Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) One, suffered a setback last year with a launch from SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland. A static, hot-fire test was performed in August 2024 which unfortunately ended in failure. Reportedly, there was a fuel leak that led to the destruction. The launch pad, an expensive piece of engineering, suffered minimal damage. There is currently work underway to build a new first stage and testing that stage. RFA is attempting a first launch in 2025.

SpaceX started out the same with many rocket failures. Everybody has to relearn the art, even the Germans.

Busy day harvesting Spaghetti!!

On 1 April 1957, a news segment was broadcast about the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest with footage of Swiss peasants harvesting spaghetti strands from spaghetti trees. Many viewers were taken in and phoned in asking how to grow their own spaghetti trees; they received the reply "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."

BBC tells a tale of a family in southern Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the fictitious spaghetti tree, broadcast at a time when this Italian dish was not widely eaten in the UK and some naive Britons were unaware that spaghetti is a pasta made from wheat flour and water.
It was considered one of the best April Fools' hoaxes of all time.

68 years later and BBC continues to fool many with their home grown propaganda; funded in part by USAID.

The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, located in southeastern Ukraine near the city of Enerhodar, on the southern shore of the Kakhovka Reservoir along the Dnieper River. It has six reactors with a total net capacity of 5,700 megawatts (MW), making it not only the largest in Europe but also one of the largest in the world. It was seized by Russia in 2022.

Quote:A hoax that shocked the (in the sense of networking still mostly American) world.

It was 1984, and the world was still in the middle of the Cold War, so any form of network connectivity to any East Block country, let alone the USSR, was unthinkable and considered a direct threat to (US) national security, as was the idea of modern computer technology (Digital Equipment Corporation's 'VAX') being in the hands of the Soviets. Konstantin Chernenko was prime minister of the USSR, General Secretary of the Communist Party and head of the 'Politburo' (the body that had the real political power in that time).

One of the brightest galaxies in planet Earth's sky is similar in size to our Milky Way Galaxy: big, beautiful Messier 81. Also known as NGC 3031 or Bode's galaxy for its 18th century discoverer, this grand spiral can be found toward the northern constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The sharp, detailed telescopic view reveals M81's bright yellow nucleus, blue spiral arms, pinkish starforming regions, and sweeping cosmic dust lanes. But some dust lanes actually cut across the galactic disk (left of center), contrary to other prominent spiral features. The errant dust lanes may be the lingering result of a close encounter between M81 and the nearby galaxy M82 lurking outside of this frame. Scrutiny of variable stars in M81 has yielded a well-determined distance for an external galaxy - 11.6 million light-years.

Countries receiving grants and loans: United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Sweden, Iceland, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, and West Germany + aid to China. Roughly 25% went to Britain, 19% went to France, and 11% went to West Germany. To receive aid, recipients had to agree to work toward free trade agreements within Europe and with the United States.

For European Recovery: The Fiftieth Anniversary of the Marshall Plan

It did help to kick start the post-war European economy, leading to the 1950s boom, particularly in West Germany. Over the next four years, Congress appropriated $13.3 billion for European recovery.

The Marshall Plan was not entirely based on an affinity for Western Europe. Countering the Soviet Union was a goal of the Plan, as the Soviets had reneged on agreements to allow Eastern European nations to hold free elections. After the Potsdam Conference in July 1945, US President Harry S. Truman had a distrust of Soviet premier Joseph Stalin and embarked on a policy of containment. This would be strengthened in 1949 after the victory of the communists in the Chinese Civil War. The American policy of containment was simple: to contain communism within its existing borders.

April 3, 1975: Vietnam War: Operation Babylift, a mass evacuation of children in the closing stages of the war begins.

From Saigon in a shoebox: Australian 'Operation Babylift' orphans reflect 40 years on

Quote:Numbers vary but it appears that at least 2,000 children were flow to the United States and approximately 1,300 children were flown to Canada, Europe and Australia.

Tragically, one of the first official government flights of Operation Babylift was struck down by disaster. A C-5A Galaxy plane - at that time the largest airplane in the world - departed with more than 300 children and accompanying adults. 40 miles out of Saigon and 23,000 feet up in the air, an explosion blow off the rear doors of the giant craft. The flight controls were crippled and decompression filled the plane with fog and a whirlwind of debris. Few could get to oxygen masks as the overcrowded transport aircraft had been prepared for 100 children, rather than the 300 passengers who had ultimately been loaded aboard.

In what has been called "a remarkable demonstration of flying skill," the US Air Force pilots were able to turn the plane back toward Saigon. The damaged plane crash landed 2 miles from Tan Son Nhut airport. It skidded about 1000 feet, bouncing up again for about half a mile, and then hit a dike and broke into several pieces upon final impact. Parts of the plane burned nearby, coated with oil from the crash. Rescue helicopters arriving quickly from Saigon were unable to land in the water of the surrounding rice paddies. The crew members, nurses, and volunteers (some of them wounded themselves) waded through the mud carrying the children to the helicopters hovering nearby. They had to shield the wounded with their bodies as winds from the helicopter rotors tossed the aircraft debris and smoke though the air.

Sadly, in what was one of the worst aircraft disasters in history at the time, more than half of the children and adults aboard the craft died. Almost everyone in the bottom cargo compartment was killed - the majority were children who were 2 years of age and younger. Seven FFAC adoption volunteers were killed in the crash, along with service members. Many of the 170 or so survivors were injured. Among those who survived unscathed was a baby (Melody) who was profiled in the press because of her subsequent adoption by actor Yul Brynner.

Little Time to Mourn : The Flights Continue

Many people in the United States viewed the Galaxy crash as another in a long series of tragic events surrounding the ill-fated war in Vietnam. At Tan Son Nhut airport, there was no time to mourn, for the fall of Saigon was near. A Pan American Airways Boeing 747 chartered by Holt International that day carried 409 children and 60 escorts, apparently the largest planeload of the Babylift. Reports vary, but it appears that 1200 children were evacuated in the 24 hours following the Galaxy crash, including 40 of the surviving children.

April 3, 1981: The Osborne 1, the first successful portable computer, was unveiled at the West Coast Computer Fair in San Francisco, California. It was developed by Adam Osborne and designed by Lee Felsenstein for the Osborne Computer Corporation.

Super light-weight at only 24.5 lb (11.1 kg), cost US$1,795, and runs the CP/M 2.2 operating system. It is powered from a wall socket, as it has no on-board battery, but it is still classed as a portable device since it can be hand-carried when the keyboard is closed. Bet you didn't see any women lugging that anchor around. LOL.

As InfoWorld stated in an April 1981 front-page article on the new computer after listing the included software, "In case you think the price printed above was a mistake, we'll repeat it: $1795". [$6,273 in 2025]

I'd like to hear about the Osborne Mujahideen story; most certainly the State Dept./CIA was involved.

In September 1981, Osborne Computer Company had its first $1 million sales month. Sales were hurt by the company's premature announcement of superior successor machines such as the Osborne Executive, which replaced the Osborne 1's 52 column screen with an 80 column screen. This phenomenon was later called the Osborne effect. From 1982 to 1985, the company published The Portable Companion, a magazine for Osborne users.

“This is an anti-fraud amendment. All over where we go, people say, why can't you stop illegal immigrants or others from coming here?"

"And the number one answer we give our constituents is when they come here, they can get jobs, get benefits against the law because of fraud."

"If you believe you want to stop fraud in immigration, you have no choice but to support this amendment."

The amendment Schumer so passionately supports here would add additional security features to the Social Security card. This bill would increase the number of border patrol agents by 5000 over the next five years.

I guess it was too much to ask the White House to put the Liberation Day tariffs in alphabetical order. Russia is not on this list because sanctions from the Ukraine war have already rendered trade between the two countries as near zero. Canada and Mexico are omitted as the previous fentanyl tariff levels (25%) will remain in effect so there is no update.
A minimum rate of 10% for listed countries, and "discounted reciprocal rate" meant to be half of what the Trump Admin believes would be fair.

The 34% tariff on China is ON TOP of the previous 20%. Meaning the rate on China will be 54% when these tariffs take effect.

The baseline import taxes will take effect after midnight Saturday and  the higher duties will kick at 12:01 a.m. on April 9, according to senior administration officials.

The dollar trade numbers are from US Trade Deficit by Country 2025

"Discounted reciprocal tariffs" refer to a trade policy where a country imposes tariffs on imports at a rate that is lower than, but proportional to, the tariffs that other countries apply to its exports. The term "reciprocal" indicates that the tariffs are set in response to the trade barriers imposed by trading partners, aiming to mirror or balance them. The "discounted" aspect means that instead of fully matching the other country's tariff rate (e.g., a 1:1 match), the imposed tariffs are reduced—often to a fraction, such as half—of the rate charged by the other country.

Quote:PROPHETS, NOMADS AND A FOURTH TURNING ACCELERATING TOWARDS A BLOODY CLIMAX

“In retrospect, the spark might seem as ominous as a financial crash, as ordinary as a national election, or as trivial as a Tea Party. The catalyst will unfold according to a basic Crisis dynamic that underlies all of these scenarios: An initial spark will trigger a chain reaction of unyielding responses and further emergencies. The core elements of these scenarios (debt, civic decay, global disorder) will matter more than the details, which the catalyst will juxtapose and connect in some unknowable way. If foreign societies are also entering a Fourth Turning, this could accelerate the chain reaction. At home and abroad, these events will reflect the tearing of the civic fabric at points of extreme vulnerability – problem areas where America will have neglected, denied, or delayed needed action.” – The Fourth Turning – Strauss & Howe

“Don’t think you can escape the Fourth Turning the way you might today distance yourself from news, national politics, or even taxes you don’t feel like paying. History warns that a Crisis will reshape the basic social and economic environment that you now take for granted. The Fourth Turning necessitates the death and rebirth of the social order. It is the ultimate rite of passage for an entire people, requiring a luminal state of sheer chaos whose nature and duration no one can predict in advance.”
– Strauss & Howe - The Fourth Turning

I believe the chaos, confusion, conflict, and collapse of confidence portends a prolonged period of discord as this Fourth Turning accelerates towards its denouement. The numerous neocon forces in the EU and US attempting to prolong and broaden the Ukraine conflict, along with the Zionist efforts to provoke a war with Iran, have pushed the world to the brink of a new global conflict. All previous Fourth Turnings were decided by an all-out bloody war, and this one is likely to experience a similarly tragic outcome.

I agree, this one will be prolonged. This is also a 400 year great cycle. These Fourth Turnings can go on for two or more decades, before finally settling in to the new regime.

The Day Doc Died | by E.M. Burlingame

We stagger into this life blind,
chewing on our own ignorance,
watching the addicts at the corner
mumble their sad, sloppy soliloquies.
We steal their scripts,
wear their shoes—
too big, too busted—
limping toward the light
of some dive called Life.

Then you showed up,
Val, dragging your pack of shadows:
Holliday, spitting blood and grinning at the reaper,
Iceman, cold and cocky as a blade,
Morrison, torching himself in a haze of words and whiskey,
Billionaire, Saint, Teen Idol, Heister, all the many more.
You wore them like a beat-up coat,
made us think we could pull off the same trick—
made us forget you were just some bastard
with a union card and a landlord to dodge.

We carved those roles into our bones,
mistook the glow of the screen for something real.
Christ, we were suckers—
thought we could be wolves, saints, sons of bitches,
all because you sold it so damn well.
You showed us how to bend,
to be hard and soft and everything else,
and we didn’t even clock it
till the credits rolled for good.

Now the screen’s dead,
the theater’s a goddamn morgue—
sticky floors, flickering exit signs,
the stink of spilled beer and regret.
We’re left with a bottle’s last gurgle,
a jukebox groaning "nobody’s home,"
and the echo of your shape-shifting—
how to play the game
without shattering the glass.

Kilmer, you son of a bitch,
you tricked us into thinking
we could live a dozen lives,
be more than the dirt we’re stuck in.
Now the curtain’s a shroud,
and we’re out here,
raw and unscripted,
fumbling lives you made look easy.

The world’s a duller, cheaper hustle without you.
We’ll raise a cheap whiskey to the void,
to the man who was never really there—
just the ghosts he left smoldering in our guts.
Rest easy, Doc.
You showed us what we could be,
and today, we’re all choking on the loss of it.

Even the A-10 had a Doc Holiday tribute. Salute.

RWJ Foundation is a philanthropic organization focused solely on health. Named after the founder, Brigadier general Robert Wood Johnson II born April 4, 1893. Upon his death he left the bulk of his $400,000,000 estate to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He was one of the sons of Robert Wood Johnson I, the co-founder of Johnson & Johnson.

At the outbreak of World War II, Johnson's work in identifying products needed by the war effort resulted in the Permacell division of J&J inventing DUCT TAPE by a Navy mom for sealing ammunition boxes. J&J simply took their existing cloth medical adhesive tape, added a waterproof plastic layer with a more aggressive adhesive, and produced it in olive drab green to match the ammunition cans.

The word "internet" was coined in December 1974 by researchers at DARPA and Stanford. Syd Mead's Running of the 200th Kentucky Derby  - painted a few months later, in early 1975 - is far as I know, the very first artwork in which the word appears.

April 5th is National Nebraska Day. Named in honor of the Cornhusker State, the Virginia-class pre-dreadnought battleship USS Nebraska (BB-14) had one of the most unusual camouflage schemes ever applied to a U.S. Navy ship.

In simplified figures, for every $100 spent for the U.S. War Program in 1942: $23 went to planes; $21 went to tanks, guns, and ammo; $12 went to transport equipage; $10 went to naval ships; $9 went to factories; $8 went to bases; $5 went to merchant ships; $4 went to food exports; $3 went to pay; $1 went to housing; and $4 went to miscellaneous war expenditures. "The 30 million school children of the nation accounted for approx one and one-half million tons of scrap metal, or about 100 pounds apiece." "In the fall and summer of 1942, cars were being moved out of auto graveyards at the average rate of 450,000 a month." Other salvage drives initiated during 1942 also produced spectacular results. America made scrap a household word and built new stockpiles of rubber, copper, tin, paper, silk and fats... By the end of the summer of 1942, American metal-working manufacturing plants had practically completed the change-over from production of normal peacetime products to production of combat material and the other goods and supplies needed to win this mechanical war." You best get busy Europe if you want to beat Russia. Meh, it's a lost cause.

As of the most recent estimates for 2025, the number of American children (ages 0–17) in the United States is approximately 73.1 million. More than the entire population of the UK. I don't believe we could pull off what those folks & kids did back in 1942. Call it a day and we'd all just die.

The Manhattan Project officially started on August 13, 1942 and in that above linked report there is of course no mention of uranium, plutonium, atomic nor any nuclear facilities. The total cost of the Manhattan Project is often cited as $1.89 billion in 1940s dollars ($23 billion today). For context, the project’s cost represented about 0.4% of the U.S. GDP at the time (GDP was around $223 billion in 1945) and consumed roughly 1–2% of total U.S. military spending during the war, which exceeded $300 billion overall. These funds were appropriated through secret congressional allocations, often buried under vague budget lines to maintain secrecy, with oversight from the War Department under General Leslie Groves.

The origins of MKULTRA can be traced to a memo dated April 5, 1950, when DCI Roscoe Hillenkoetter signed off on Project Bluebird, which evolved into Artichoke and eventually MKULTRA. This DCI would go on to become a big hit among UFO & NICAP fans.

April 4, 1958: Cheryl Crane (14), daughter of actress Lana Turner, stabs to death organized crime figure Johnny Stompanato, her mother's boyfriend, in self-defense; crime later ruled a "justifiable homicide."

There is considerable belief within Hollywood insiders that Lana did the deed and threw her daughter under the bus knowing she would skate. Cheryl at the time of her birth, suffered near-fatal erythroblastosis fetalis due to her mother's Rh-negative blood. Perhaps that is why after EIGHT marriages, Lana only had one child.

Wonder of the Worlds was published in 2005 by Lost Continent Library (Walter Bosley's publishing house), is the first in a trilogy of novels featuring secret agent Harry Houdini facing off against a Martian invasion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the first installment, Wonder of the Worlds, Nikola Tesla, Mark Twain and Houdini pursue Martian agents who have stolen a powerful crystal from Tesla at the historically pivotal 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Along for the ride aboard Tesla's airship are other historical figures, reporters Lillie West and George Ade, as well as Kolman Czito, Tesla's assistant.

On the journey to the Red Planet, the adventurers are treated to a hidden history of conflict between the Earth and Mars, as well as Tesla's stunning knowledge of geophysics of the two planets. Upon arrival on Mars, the team pursues the crystal deep into the underground civilization ruled by Kel, the mad emperor determined to subjugate Earth with the power of the crystal.

Trust is gained in drops and lost in buckets.

What is taught to senior military leaders at our nation’s War Colleges is that a nation’s power emanates from four areas:

- Strength of diplomacy
- Strength of economy
- Strength of its military
- Strength of truthful public information.

All combined to determine power on the global stage.

The USS Nebraska camouflage scheme knocks it out of the park.  Never seen such an effort.  Would be good on a model ship outfit.

A Strategy of Containment: Paul Nitze's NSC-68, the "blueprint of the Cold War" about US foreign policy, a Top-Secret report completed by the Department of State’s Policy Planning Staff on April 7, 1950. It concluded that the only plausible way to deter the Soviet Union was for Truman to support a massive build-up of both conventional and nuclear arms. It suggested that the Govt increase taxes and reduce other expenditures.

Paul Henry Nitze (January 16, 1907 – October 19, 2004) was an American businessman and government official who served as United States Deputy Secretary of Defense, U.S. Secretary of the Navy, and Director of Policy Planning for the U.S. State Department. He is best known for being the principal author of NSC 68 and the co-founder of Team B. He helped shape U.S. Cold War defense policy over the course of numerous presidential administrations.

NSC-68 - Office of The Historian

United States Objectives and Programs for National Security (NSC 68)

Sorcerers and apprentices

Quote:Paul Nitze entered government service during WWII as an administrative assistant to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In 1942, he became finance director of the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, working for Nelson Rockefeller. In 1943 he became chief of the Metals and Minerals Branch of the Board of Economic Warfare, until he was named director, Foreign Procurement and Development Branch of the Foreign Economic Administration later that year. From 1944 to 1946, Nitze served as director and then as Vice Chairman of the Strategic Bombing Survey for which President Harry S. Truman awarded him the Legion of Merit. One of his early government assignments was to visit Japan in the immediate aftermath of the nuclear attacks and assess the damage.

In the early postwar era, he served in the Truman Administration as Director of Policy Planning for the State Department (1950–1953). He was also the principal author in 1950 of the highly influential but secret National Security Council policy paper, NSC 68, which provided the strategic outline for increased U.S. expenditures to counter the perceived threat of Soviet armament.

From 1953 to 1961, Nitze served as president of the Foreign Service Educational Foundation while concurrently serving as associate of the Washington Center of Foreign Policy Research and the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University. In 1956 he attended the Project Nobska anti-submarine warfare conference.

Nitze co-founded the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) with Christian Herter in 1943. His publications include “U.S. Foreign Policy: 1945–1955.” In 1961, President Kennedy appointed Nitze Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. In 1963, Nitze became the Secretary of the Navy, serving until 1967. His many achievements included establishing the first Personnel Policy Board and retention task force (the Alford Board), and obtaining targeted personnel bonuses. He lengthened commanding officer tours and raised command responsibility pay.

Following his term as Secretary of the Navy, he served as Deputy Secretary of Defense (1967–1969), as a member of the U.S. delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) (1969–1973). Later, he opposed the ratification of SALT II (1979).

Paul Nitze was a cofounder of Team B, a 1970s intelligence think tank that challenged the National Intelligence Estimates provided by the CIA.

Nitze was President Ronald Reagan's chief negotiator of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (1981–1984). In 1984, Nitze was named Special Advisor to the President and Secretary of State on Arms Control.

April 7th is International Beaver Day. In 1998, Royal Navy sailors wrote a letter to Navy News to complain that HMS Beaver and other warships named for "fluffy animals" were bad for morale. The sailors believed that "inoffensive, soft and cuddly and occasionally downright dull" names prevented them from making a strong impression on other nations.
