July 21, 1967: The ‘Little Man’ of North Carolina

Ronnie Hill, 14 years old, of Pamlico County, North Carolina, sends a color photo of what looks like a little man in a spacesuit standing in front of a spherical UFO to a New York magazine editor. It winds up in the hands of John A. Keel. Ronnie tells him the UFO landed in his backyard. Keel gathers affidavits from Ronnie’s teachers, parents, and the local 4-H club, and submits the photo to "several professional photographers" in New York, who cannot find evidence of a hoax.

Soon, however, Keel has doubts and the photo is revealed to be that of a small model positioned in front of an egg.

Quote:The study of the UFO phenomenon is, at times, a highly contradictory one. UFO enthusiasts will fight to their last breath to convince the world that a certain case, which has no physical evidence behind it, is absolutely true; yet, on other occasions, cases which have at least something physical to them are ignored.

For instance, we have the case of a boy named Ronnie Hill, aged 14, of Pamlico county, North Carolina. On the fine summer afternoon of 21 July 1967, he was playing in his family’s garden, apparently alone, when a strange scent filled the air. It was so bad that it made his eyes start to tear; he became suddenly concerned that this malodorous aroma had to do with the spaceship landing in a nearby field. Thinking, and quite rightly, that no one would believe him if he told them he’d seen a flying saucer, he ran inside to get a portable Kodak camera.

Returning to the scene, Ronnie saw that the spaceship, a spherical white thing that he estimated to be about 9 feet in diameter, had indeed come to rest in the nearby field. Ominously, from behind the craft stepped a creature clad in a shiny silver suit, with spindly, thin legs and an oversized gnome head. It carried a black object that it inserted into the ground, withdrew, and then returned to his ship, which departed for points unknown. In the ship’s wake, Ronnie could smell something similar to propane gas, but the thing that scared him the most was that this whole nightmare scene played out in absolute, dead, total silence. No birds chirping, no insects whirring, no nothing.

At first glance, this is the sort of alien encounter that occurs every day. Well, supposedly occurs every day. Fodder, perhaps, for the tabloids? Not so! Because Ronnie Hill, in a feat of either courage or total stuttering foolishness, snapped a picture of the space monster before he returned to his ship and departed for the stars.

Incontrovertible proof that space aliens have appeared on earth to kidnap her dirt and startle her children? Perhaps. Perhaps not. There are several noteworthy things about the photograph:

ETMN--

One bit about the critique of the photo.  In the top version of the photo, trees -can- be clearly seen, although I agree there is practically nothing to judge scale with.

The doll or whatever it is looks like one of those old-time dolls of a baby, the kind that looked more grotesque than loveable.

I wish, though, there had been more information on why Keel came to doubt the authenticity of the photo.

Be nice if an ageing Ronnie Hill stepped forward today to comment on the affair.

Oh, and that "eggshell" -- look at it ... it appears to have contours or running along its length.  Maybe a gourd of some kind ?

Interesting discussion of the photo and why it is deemed fake here:

This page claims the alien was a doll wrapped in aluminium foil.

July 25, 2023: The RAND boys issue a 62-page report titled Not the X-Files: Mapping Public Reports of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Across America in which it presents a “geographic analysis of 101,151 public reports of UAP sightings in 12,783 US Census Bureau” designated places based on National UFO Research Center cases.

The authors find that the reports tend to cluster within 19 miles of military operations areas where the Air Force or Navy engages in combat maneuvers, air intercepts, and low-altitude tactics.

Key Findings

A review of 101,151 public reports of UAP sightings in the United States from 1998 to 2022 found an inconsistent relationship between the nearest military and weather installations and self-reports of UAP sightings.

The models used to conduct the analysis showed that reports of UAP sightings were less likely within 30 km of weather stations, 60 km of civilian airports, and in more–densely populated areas, while rural areas tended to have a higher rate of UAP reports.

The most consistent and statistically significant finding was that reports of UAP sightings were more likely to occur in areas within 30 km of military operations areas, where routine military training occurs.

July 30, 1952: Saucer Sam — RAF Oldenburg, Germany
Flight Sgt. Roland Hughes of No. 20 Squadron RAF is on a training flight in a de Havilland Vampire FB-9 jet fighter and returning to base at RAF Oldenburg, Germany...

...when he sees a “gleaming silver, metallic disc” drop down from above and fly alongside his aircraft for several seconds before speeding off.The object is about 100 feet long. Its surface is shiny “like tinfoil,” highly reflective, and “without a single crease or crinkle in it.”

On August 5, Hughes is ordered to fly to RAF Faßberg for further questioning. He arrives and finds a number of officers, including his commander and the UK Minister of Supply, Duncan Sandys (Winston Churchill‘s son-in-law), who asks Hughes how many beers he had before his saucer sighting. The Air Commanding Officer then reveals that the object had also been tracked on radar going faster than any known aircraft.

This convinces Sandys that the case is a serious one, a view that he communicates to Lord Cherwell (Frederick Alexander Lindemann, 1st Viscount Cherwell), the government’s chief scientific adviser, in a letter, saying there is "ample evidence of some unfamiliar and unexplained phenomenon."

"The UFO experience stayed with Sgt Hughes for the rest of his life, but he could never understand why his three colleagues failed to see the flying saucer. Before he died in 2009, at the age of 79, he confided in his son that he wondered ‘if it had some means of stopping the others from seeing it and only allowed me to see it’.!"

"In official papers Duncan Sandys implied that his interview with Sgt Hughes turned him from a sceptic into a believer in flying saucers. Responding to the sceptical Lord Cherwell, he said he had no doubt Sgt Hughes ‘saw a phenomenon similar to that described by numerous observers in the United States."

"Mile wide" delta-shaped UFO made two US F-14 fighter jets disappear in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.

Quote:(Case Files Revealed : The UFO Art of James Nichols).

On December 28, 1988, at approximately 7:45 pm, a large triangle craft roughly the size of a baseball field was seen moving steadily along in the region near the naval air station in Puerto Rico, according to many witnesses (over a hundred). Three F-14s intercepted the moving UFO and apparently tried to force it to change its course. As the navy fighter planes engaged the large craft, it slowed down its forward speed almost to a standstill. One plane, in particular, stayed mostly to the right of the UFO and another stayed behind the UFO making close approaches at times. The third plane apparently stayed a bit farther out.

The F-14 in the rear came close to the object, but as it flew either over or under the object, it was not seen again. Small red lights were also seen at times flying outside the large craft and may have served to protect the craft. It was as if the fighter plane had somehow been drawn into the large craft. The second aircraft made a sweep closer to the large object and was seen by one ground witness—using binoculars—to suddenly disappear—possibly being taken in by the UFO.

The third F-14 reportedly high-tailed it out of the area on afterburner with glowing red lights chasing after it apparently in pursuit, according to ground witnesses.

August 4, 1987: like a "flying fairground" in England.

10:00 p.m. Gordon Baker and two others watch two cross-shaped objects pass slowly and silently over his home from northeast to southwest in Exmouth, Devon, England.

Describing it like a “flying fairground” at 38,000 feet, he watches a jet aircraft fly underneath it. They watch it for 15 minutes until it disappears on the horizon. Observers in Lympstone and Budleigh Salterton also see the object.

Two huge, delta-shaped objects are seen making successive passes over Plymouth, Devon, between 10:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Observations were also made in Bude, Cornwall, and Exeter, Devon, where they were apparently tracked on radar.

Anyone know that Wilson voice? John Lear or Richard Doty?

"The government is a multi-headed dragon and sections of that change every four years. So, you have this constant change going on of musical chairs. So, if a group is going to indeed control this information in some fashion, it has to be a group that is in place continuously. With that kind of control comes the danger always. Who watches the watchers?"

August 14, 1952: The CIA’s special UFO study group meets for the first time and is given a summary (probably written by A. Ray Gordon, project officer of the CIA’s Physics and Electronics Branch) of UFO history, an analysis of Project Blue Book, and a discussion of explained sightings and theories about unexplained sightings.

Gordon is also mentioned in the March 6, 2024 AARO Report (pg 16)
