The comic book was the brainchild of American Nazi Party stalwart John Patler who was responsible for both the story and illustrations. The book was distributed by the Dallas branch of the ANP, which was run by married members Robert and Mary Surrey. In 1966, Rockwell moved the Party's business operations from party headquarters in Arlington to Dallas due to the seizure of its assets by the IRS in late 1965. So it's likely that the comic book was issued in 1966 instead of the 1965 date typically cited. Adverts for other Party paraphernalia include a ‘Boat Ticket to Africa', Stormtrooper magazine, and swastika armbands, all available from the Dallas branch.

Quote:On the morning of February 20th 1971 millions of Americans were enjoying what was shaping up to look like a totally normal day. People woke up, ate breakfast, and made their way to their daily obligations of school or a job expecting nothing out of the ordinary. One of the many adults spending that morning at work was Wayland S. Eberhardt, a civilian teletype operator with the National Emergency Warning Center at Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colorado. One of Eberhardt’s routine tasks was to run scheduled tests from the Emergency Broadcast System. It was a task that had been completed many times by the fifteen-year veteran of Cheyenne Mountain but on that February morning a simple mistake brought the entire county to its knees in a matter of seconds.

Founded in 1963, the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) was designed to transmit an Emergency Action Notification (EAN) across both television and radio which would allow the government to quickly reach the American people should an unspeakable situation arise. In the event of an emergency, an EAN was to be initiated by the National Emergency Warning Center located at Cheyenne Mountain and using teletype tape a message would be sent to Telex machines located in every broadcast station in the country that was part of the EBS. Each of these messages was accompanied by a code word that had to be looked up in a book or verified against a list of words inside a sealed envelope to ensure that it was genuine. These code words changed daily and the EBS was tested twice a week at specifically scheduled times to assure preparedness. On February 20th 1971 at 9:33 A.M. Eberhardt fed a tape into a teletype transmitter sending a message to 5,000 radio and 800 television stations across the United States. The problem was that he fed the wrong tape into the machines, one that told everyone to brace not for a test, but for news of an actual emergency.

All over the nation broadcast station Telex machines rang out bell sounds warning that an EBS message was coming. The words on the paper chilled those who read it to the bone:

“MESSAGE AUTHENTICATOR: HATEFULNESS/HATEFULNESS

The EBS message received by stations, code word “Hatefulness”

Undoubtedly made even more sinister by the code word of that day, “Hatefulness”, the message sent the readers into a state of panic as they quickly clamored to verify the term to make sure that this was definitely not a drill. When the code word was authenticated the fear became widespread. David Skinner, the news director of WEVA in Emporia, Virginia later told a reporter: “I thought I was going to have a heart attack trying to open that damned envelope. I haven’t felt that way since John Kennedy was killed.” Another station manager later said he and his coworkers felt as if they were experiencing the attack on Pearl Harbor all over again. Even though the code words matched there was still some confusion, was it a coincidence that the EBS warning happened to come out at the same time as the scheduled test? Some argued that if it was an actual emergency the bells that warned of the incoming message were supposed to ring more times than they had that morning. Other stations could not locate their lists to authenticate the code word and others simply refused to go off the air as instructed. Broadcasters and listeners waited together in fear wondering what could have happened that was serious enough to trigger a real warning from the EBS. Where was the President with his message? Were we at war? Was there an unavoidable nuclear attack on the horizon? In a country that was still dealing with the looming threat of the Cold War anything seemed possible.

Panic was also running wild at Cheyenne Mountain where people were desperately trying to get the word out that the emergency message was in fact a mistake. A new message was sent out telling stations to ignore the previous warning:

However, the cancellation message was also supposed to have a code word to verify it and without that code word, “impish”, the warning was to be ignored. At 9:59 A.M. the National Emergency Warning Center tried sending another message to ignore the warning and decided to use the code word “hatefulness” again. Since this was the same code word found in the original warning the stations again ignored the message. Finally, at 10:13 A.M., nearly forty minutes after the crippling EBS message went out, a new message containing the correct code was sent:

A failed attempt to cancel the warning using “Hatefulness” a second time

The country gave out a collective sigh of relief, waited for their nerves to calm, and returned to their day. Secretary of State Melvin Laird stated that there would be an investigation of what caused the false alarm and the Pentagon released a statement saying:

“The Office of Civil Defense is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the transmittal of the erroneous message. The National Emergency Warning System is located within the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain complex but is not a NORAD function. It is operated by the the U.S. Army’s Strategic Communications Command. This is a civil defense action and not a military one.”

As for the crew in Cheyenne Mountain, Eberhardt was severely shaken up by his mistake and later told newspapers that he genuinely did not know how he accidently fed that message into the machine. The chief of the National Emergency Warning Center did not fire Eberhardt, but took the entire episode as evidence that he had to find a way to make the system foolproof. His solution? To move the actual emergency message tapes away from their location next to the transmitter and seal them in envelopes inside a nearby cabinet. It proved to be a simple and effective solution.

Quote:Hellstrom's Hive is a 1973 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. It is about a secret group of humans who model their lives upon social insects and the unsettling events that unfold after they are discovered by a deep undercover agency of the U.S. government. Dr. Nils Hellstrom, an entomologist, is a successful film maker and influential scientific advisor with strong political ties. Living and working with a small staff on a farm in rural Oregon, he attracts the attention of an unnamed government organisation when documents are discovered that hint on cult-like activities and a secret weapon project.

An operative from the government is sent, but is quickly assassinated by Hellstrom's operatives. Further operatives are sent and it is revealed that the farm is situated above a vast system of tunnels and caves, hosting a hive-like subterranean society of nearly 50,000 specialized hybrid human-insect workers. Hellstrom, thanks to advanced bioengineering, has been the appointed hive leader for more than 100 years. He is completely convinced of the superiority of the hive and its abandonment of conventional morals and ethics: sexuality or violence, indeed, any individual action, is rated strictly whether it strengthens or weakens the hive as a whole. The government spies soon learn the hive has progressed to using sexual "stumps," both male and female — "the stump of a human body from about the waist to the knees" — as a method of harvesting "wild" genes or maintaining certain breeding lines when the individuals are no longer trustworthy members of the hive. The hive have also developed a secret weapon that it will use to displace humans as the dominant intelligent species on the planet.

The story is told from various perspectives of members of both the nameless organisation investigating the farm and plotting against each other, as well as Hellstrom and several high-ranking hive members collectively dealing with the threat of being discovered and probably extinguished by "the wild ones". In the end, the hive's weapon project is ready to protect the hive and the upcoming 'swarming' - the gradual displacement of individual-based humanity.

David L. Wolper's quasi-documentary film The Hellstrom Chronicle, released in 1971, was the inspiration for Herbert's novel. In an interview with Tim O'Reilly, Herbert stated: "I said, 'In terms of what we want now, as we think of our world now, what would be the most horrible kind of civilization you could imagine?' And then I said, 'Now I will make... [the members of that civilization] the heroes of the story, by taking negative elements of the surrounding society and treating them as the villain.' That creates a very peculiar kind of tension."

Stanton observed that if such subpoena actions were allowed, there would be a "chilling effect" upon broadcast journalism.

For his efforts in that situation, Stanton was awarded one of three personal Peabody Awards (the others coming in 1959 and 1960). He also shared two other Peabodys that were awarded to CBS as a network.

The date of this statement was February 26, 1952. Rather, it was in reference to the results of an investigation by the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Waste. Congressman Hebert was the chairman of that subcommittee.

Ironically, two decades later, it was this same Congressman Hebert who filed afairness complaint with the FCC against "The Selling of the Pentagon" ; the same Congressman Hebert who condemned CBS News and the documentary as "un-American" and "Goebbels-like"; and the same Congressman Hebert who was so instrumental in persuading the Investigations Subcommittee of the House Commerce Committee to undertake its investigation of CBS in the spring of 1971.

After about ayear of research, filming, and editing, "The Selling of the Pentagon" was first broadcast on February 23, 1971. It focused on the Pentagon's public relations efforts, which ranged from distributing propaganda movies to holding military demonstrations around the country. As is usual with television documentaries, relatively few viewers (only several million) watched the initial broadcast.

The New York Times reviewer and many other television critics praised the broadcast. (It was given all the major awards that year.) But others criticized it—including Congressman Hebert, Vice President Agnew, and Melvin Laird, the secretary of defense. CBS News, in its regular news broadcasts, reported these criticisms.

The controversy it engendered was so great that we decided to re-broadcast it amonth later. This time, the audience was half again as large as it was for the first broadcast. At the end of the second broadcast, we included atwenty-two-minute addendum, which included statements by some of the documentary's main critics, and a five-minute reply by me. In it I said:

No one has refuted the essential accuracy of "The Selling of the Pentagon." In a ceremony at NASA Headquarters, Omar Paganini, foreign minister of Uruguay, signed the Accords on the behalf of the country. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and other officials from both the United States and Uruguay attended the signing.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to introduce space cooperation as a new chapter in the robust bilateral agenda between Uruguay and the U.S.,” Paganini said in a statement about the signing, calling it “the beginning of a new bilateral track” of cooperation between the countries.

Uruguay does not have a significant space program, but announced last year plans to establish a national space agency. Uruguay has hosted the headquarters of Satellogic, a company developing a constellation of Earth observation satellites, although the company said in September it planned to redomicile the company in the United States to allow it to compete for U.S. government business.

The signing took place as part of bilateral ministerial meetings between the United States and Uruguay. In a readout of those meetings, the U.S. State Department said the United States “agreed to support Uruguay exploring civilian and commercial space industries,” but did not elaborate on those plans.

“The United States and Uruguay share a commitment to democracy and peace, and now, we expand these principles in the cosmos to commit to the safe and transparent exploration of space,” Nelson said in a statement about the signing.

Uruguay is the 36th country to sign the Accords, established in 2020, and the second in as many weeks after Greece signed the documents Feb. 9. The signatories range from countries with advanced space programs to those like Uruguay that are only starting to develop space capabilities.

The Artemis Accords outline best practices for countries to follow in space exploration activities, building upon the Outer Space Treaty and other international agreements on topics ranging from registration of space objects to utilization of space resources.

Hong, a professor in Yonsei University’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, worked with colleagues to grow beef cells inside of rice grains coated in fish gelatin and familiar food-grade enzymes. The end result: a bowl of rice that has 8 percent more protein than a normal serving and produces the same amount of carbon emissions as the grain crop, a staple food for about half of the world’s population. The findings were published in a paper that Hong co-authored in the journal Matter this month.

“I’m a polymer engineer, and not a nutritionist or food expert,” Hong said. “An 8 percent increase in protein may not seem significant, but the fact that actual animal protein can be consumed through rice is important.”

“This is the vision that the whole field is aspiring toward, for sure,” said Amy Rowat, a professor of integrative biology and physiology at the University of California at Los Angeles. “The million-dollar question is, when will we see this in your grocery store? I think we are still some ways away.”

For at least 10 years, scientists around the world have been looking for the right “scaffolding” — what some call a “microcarrier” — upon which they can raise cultured animal protein and fat cells. In 2013, a scientist from the Netherlands attracted international attention when he grew a hamburger patty in a Petri dish and then presented it for a guest to eat it on live television. The beef patty cells were harvested after they proliferated on the surface of inedible microbeads.

Cultivated meats have attracted billions of dollars in investment but are still costly to produce and difficult to scale. Only two countries in the world — the United States and Singapore — allow consumers to buy them. Some companies are working on new, hybrid products: for example, plant-based meat with animal fat incorporated for taste. But even sales of plant-based meat alternatives have slid after a strong market debut.

At least half of all U.S. adults in a 2023 survey said they were “not at all likely” to try lab-grown meat. Among them, 56 percent said it “just sounds weird,” and nearly half said they weren’t convinced eating it would be safe.

“Definitely, one of the hurdles is public perception. … The taste and disgust factor is something that comes up often,” Rowat said. “If you call a food ‘lab-grown,’ that is not an incentivizing factor and it doesn’t really convey how the meat is actually produced.”

“But if you eat Doritos, for example, so much science is poured into that food — and people are more willing to accept it.”

For now, Hong’s rice is not ready for supermarket shelves, but he hopes to tinker with the ratio of protein and fat cells to maximize its nutritional value and improve the taste, which carries flavors of almond from the muscle protein cells and butter from the fat cells. It doesn’t quite taste like beef, he said, because there is no blood.

“If I were a chef,” he said, “I may have to use some seasoning to make it feel very delicious.”

What a lab-made meat-rice hybrid says about the future of food

Those employees will focus on generative AI projects, an increasingly key priority for the company.

Elon Musk, head of Tesla Inc., also celebrated the move. He shared a post on the X social media site with a saluting emoji and a cigarette.

The decision to ultimately wind down the project is a bombshell for the company, ending a multibillion-dollar effort called Project Titan that would have vaulted Apple into a whole new industry. The tech giant started working on a car around 2014, setting its sights on a fully autonomous electric vehicle with a limousine-like interior and voice-guided navigation.

But the project struggled nearly from the start, with Apple changing the team’s leadership and strategy several times. Lynch and Williams took charge of the undertaking a few years ago — following the departure of Doug Field, now a senior executive at Ford Motor Co.
