Well, someone decided to up the stakes and took out a Dam (Nova Kakhovka, Ukraine) & screams of ecocide on the Russian regime are in the headlines today.

June 6, 1962, Otto Preminger's classic political drama ADVISE & CONSENT, adapted from Allen Drury's 1959 Pulitzer Prize bestseller, opened at the Criterion and Sutton theaters in New York City. Peter Lawford was cast because Otto Preminger valued his access to the Kennedy family. Lawford was John F. Kennedy's brother in law, and JFK was also a massive movie buff who loved having a film crew around the White House. This was one of a number of Preminger films that challenged both the Motion Picture Association of America's Production Code and the Hollywood blacklist. It pushed censorship boundaries with its depiction of a married senator who is being blackmailed over a wartime homosexual affair, and was the first mainstream American movie after World War II to show a gay bar. Preminger confronted the blacklist by casting left-wing actors Will Geer and Burgess Meredith. It was the first of five films in which Preminger cast Meredith.

Quote:LONDON — It’s around the year 1480, and a wandering English bard walks into a bar. What does he say to the crowd of drunken peasants gathered inside?

A series of irreverent jokes about incontinence, killer rabbits and binge drinking, according to new literary research. The study, published in the Review of English Studies on Wednesday, found that a medieval tome known as the Heege manuscript is no ordinary notebook: It actually includes the comedy script of an unnamed traveling entertainer, otherwise known as a minstrel. The revelation means the manuscript provides, perhaps for the first time, a direct glimpse into the long-forgotten oral tradition of English minstrel acts.

These comedy routines are the medieval equivalent of late-night talk shows, said James Wade, the Cambridge University expert behind the study. The manuscript was probably transcribed around 1480 in England’s Midlands region by Richard Heege, a family tutor; literary experts previously considered its contents to be of uncertain origin.
“It gives us a glimpse into live comedy and entertainment in the Middle Ages that would otherwise be lost,” Wade said, noting some of the similarities between the minstrel’s jokey style and comedy that remains popular today.

The performer’s jokes paint a lively picture of late-medieval English humor, inverting everyday scenes for comic effect and frequently showing peasants and kings being stung by their own stupidity or greed.
In one pamphlet, titled “The Hounding of the Hare,” dimwitted peasants set out to hunt rabbits. In the chaos and confusion of the chase, the hunters end up preying on each other instead. The scene is so topsy-turvy that one of the peasants becomes terrified that the rabbit will murder him, rather than the other way around.

At one point, the tale goes like this (all stories here translated by Wade from Middle English):

June 7, 1960: BROKEN ARROW, a BOMARC (Boeing Michigan Aeronautical Research Center) surface-to-air missile on alert at McGuire AFB, New Jersey, caught fire. The high-intensity blaze melted the 10-kiloton W40 warhead and caused significant plutonium contamination of the surrounding soil that was not properly cleaned up until 2004.

Yes, nuclear missiles for air defense! Several types deployed around dozens of large US cities from the 1950s into the 1970s, all to protect against the vastly over-hyped threat of a Soviet nuclear bomber attack. Initially planned for 52 sites, BOMARC missiles were ultimately deployed at just eight US Air Force bases in Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia from 1959-72, and at two Royal Canadian Air Force bases in Ontario and Quebec from 1962-72.

June 8, 1940: the German battleship Scharnhorst scored one of the longest-range naval gunfire hits in history when a projectile struck HMS Glorious from almost 15 miles away. Very impressive. Scharnhorst and sister ship Gneisenau then moved closer and fired several salvos that sank the carrier with over 1200 lives lost. HMS Glorious was originally a battlecruiser and rebuilt as an aircraft carrier during the late 1920s.

On June 8th, the commanding officer of Glorious was sailing to Orkney Islands, Scotland to hold a court-martial of his Commander, who had refused an order to carry out an attack on shore targets due to ambiguous target info.

June 8, 1967: 34 crew members were killed and 171 wounded when USS Liberty was attacked by Israeli forces. The official story: Israel apologized for the attack, claiming that the Liberty had been mistaken for an Egyptian ship. Too badly damaged to be repaired, the Liberty was scrapped. There is evidence that IDF Gen. Sharon ordered the attack knowing that the ship was a US naval vessel.

You’ve got mail! June 8, 1959, in a publicity stunt crafted by the US Postmaster General and the Navy, a Regulus I cruise missile carried—in lieu of its nuclear warhead, 3,000 identical pieces of "missile mail" launched from the USS Barbero (SS/SSA/SSG-317 Balao-class submarine) to the Naval Auxiliary Air Station at Mayport, FL.

Watch the Missile Mail launch:

The letters were addressed to President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, cabinet officers, senior federal officials, every member of Congress, Supreme Court justices, governors, the officers and crew of the USS Barbero, and postmasters general from other countries.

Philatelic souvenir:

Regulus Missile Mail

During a training mission off the east coast, the USS Barbero fired the Regulus I missile a little before noon. It arrived in Mayport (near Jacksonville) 22 minutes later. Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield enthused about the possibilities of hyper-rapid mail delivery, but...

...the exercise (the only one of its kind) also sent a not-too-subtle message to the Soviet Union (and others) that at least with this particular missile—the United States was capable of delivering nuclear weapons on a target quickly and with precision.

The New York Times noted the stunt had been preceded by a proof-of-concept test off the Pacific Coast several months earlier, and that a Jupiter IRBM (Intermediate-range ballistic missile) launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, the previous fall carried a letter to the commander of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency.

The Regulus I was deployed aboard five submarines from 1954-64 and four cruisers from 1955-61, and armed with either the W5 (10-47 kilotons) or W27 (2 Megatons) warhead. It had a range of 500 nautical miles. The Regulus I was retired once Polaris SLBMs became fully operational in 1964. Both Regulus I and Regulus II were used as target drones after 1964 under the designation BQM-6C.

June 8, 1966: one of only two XB-70 Valkyrie Mach 3 6-engine prototype super-bomber aircraft crashed in California following a collision with an F-104 Starfighter during a photo shoot arranged by the Air Force for General Electric, which wanted to showcase the five USAF planes powered by its jet engines.

The collision killed NASA Chief Test Pilot Joe Walker, who was flying the F-104, and Carl Cross, the XB-70 co-pilot. Al White, the XB-70 pilot, ejected and survived, although he suffered serious injuries, including a crushed arm caused by the clamshell-like crew escape capsule.

See it in action:

The B-70 was designed in the late 1950s to replace the B-52, but its vulnerability to Soviet SAMs and the rapid growth of US ICBMs raised questions about its necessity. Despite pressure, JFK limited it to two prototypes in March 1961 and changed the program to a research project. Total cost was $15 billion (in 2023 dollars). Today we have a new bomber that looks like a flying saucer from the 50s.

$700 million per saucer and expected to cost $203 billion over 30 years.

Meanwhile, the remaining 72 Boeing B-52 Stratofortress (BUFF) still roars onward since 1952. That was also a big UFO year.

USS Missouri (BB-63) "Mighty Mo" was the only Iowa-class battleship not to have a turret altered in the 1950s for W23 "Katie" nuclear projectiles. All the W23 projectiles (only 50) were withdrawn from service in 1962. The W23 was 16 inches (406 mm) in diameter and 64 inches (160 cm) long, with a weight given variously as 1,500 or 1,900 pounds (680 or 860 kg) in reference sources. As with the W19, yield was 15-20 kilotons and world's largest nuclear artillery.

There could be a fun episode about all the oddball nuclear weapons. Like the nuclear rifle "The Davy Crockett", Atomic Annie 280mm nuclear cannon, the air to air unguided nuclear "Genie" rocket, the nuclear torpedo, the W54 Special Atomic Demolition Munition "Dam Buster" and now this nuke projectile.

June 12, 1982, an estimated 750,000-1,000,000 people marched through New York City from the United Nations to Central Park to demand a halt to the dangerous, escalating, and expensive US-Soviet nuclear arms race—at the time, the largest political protest in American history.

Here's a 4-page PDF manifesto copy of the original "Call To Halt The Nuclear Arms Race: Proposal for a Mutual US-Soviet Nuclear-Weapon Freeze", which spurred a nationwide movement and led to the unprecedented 1982 march and demonstration.

As Dr. Randall Caroline Forsberg (July 23, 1943 – October 19, 2007), one of the founders of the nuclear freeze campaign and an organizer of the march, said that day, “Until the arms race stops, until we have a world with peace and justice, we will not go home and be quiet. We will go home and organize.”

Robert Richter’s documentary "In Our Hands" released June 12, 1983, produced by 43 volunteer camera teams and 12 volunteer editors and featuring ordinary citizens along with well-known performers and activists—conveys the energy and passion of that unprecedented day. "One million people. One voice: stop the nuclear arms race. The largest peace demonstration in history, a magical day when even the police were on the side of the marchers." Some notable participates: Meryl Streep, Jerry Stiller, Carly Simon, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Roy Scheider, Susan Sarandon, Orson Welles.

On the librarian-military-industrial complex:

Quote:As part of a telephone survey afterwards, participants were asked to provide two or three words describing the experience. Of the 78 total words provided, 21 were the same adjective: ‘frustrating’. Participants had trouble signing on to the system and experienced unpredictable failures, ‘irrelevant output’ and, most of all, not knowing ‘what words to use in a search’. Yet they also found the system intriguing and exciting (‘fun’, ‘thorough’, ‘I dig computers’), and 94 per cent said they would use SUPARS (the Syracuse University Psychological Abstracts Retrieval Service) again if it were available. Several offered to keep the experiment running past its deadline by asking their departments to contribute funding to the project.

This group of academic guinea pigs, mostly graduate students in education, psychology and librarianship, were part of a radical online search experiment run by the Syracuse University School of Library Science. SUPARS was one of many ambitious information-retrieval studies that took place between the late 1960s and mid-1970s on US university campuses. A number of factors led to the surge in this research. Developments in computer-processing capability for speed and storage had allowed academic databases and catalogues to be digitised and moved online. Computer terminals were newly modular and could be placed around campuses for decentralised access to mainframes. And military and industry funding for computer-based research was more abundant than it had ever been. Given the opportunity, academic librarians took advantage of the chance to explore this expensive new technology. In turn, universities offered unclassified environments for collaborations with corporate technology firms and military groups; SUPARS was sponsored by the Rome Air Development Center, the laboratory arm of the US Air Force.
....
SUPARS was designed by a librarian named Pauline Atherton (who goes by the name of Pauline Atherton Cochrane today). In 1960, aged 30 and early in her library career, she had been the cross-reference editor of that year’s revision of the World Book Encyclopedia, ensuring thorough and accurate cross-linking between different articles. By 1966, she was working at the Syracuse University libraries and in the library school, where in 1968 she demonstrated the first use of an online decimal classification file to aid in search (AUDACIOUS). That same year, she established the first computer-based teaching lab that integrated online search into regular classroom teaching at the library school (LEEP). (In the context of the world before the internet, ‘online’ meant establishing a networked, real-time connection between a mainframe computer and some other remote device, such as a terminal.)

For example, one of the most celebrated figures in this history is Joseph Carl Robnett ‘Lick’ Licklider, whose idea of a universal network directly inspired the invention of ARPANET, often described as ‘the first internet’. (Licklider was also deeply involved with similar 1960s and ’70s campus experiments for online search; he both funded and advised on several studies at MIT libraries that ran during the same period as SUPARS.)

In 1968, the year before SUPARS was designed, Licklider’s paper ‘The Computer as a Communication Device’ declared that: ‘In a few years, men will be able to communicate more effectively through a machine than face to face’ and described a rewarding, blissful society mediated by human computer interactions. Licklider predicted that ‘life will be happier for the on-line individual’ and that ‘communication will be more effective and productive, and therefore more enjoyable’. Licklider’s essay is typically both predictive and rosy for this futuristic genre about the potential of information technology.
...
In 2022 and 2023, as the first generative AI search engines, including academic search engines such as Elicit and Consensus, were introduced to a wide set of users to both great excitement and scepticism, it is similarly useful to analyse what will be lost when researchers come to rely on these tools. When we can simply enter research questions to create instantaneous literature reviews, for example, there will not be merely a great positive leap forward. This new technology will create a lack of grounding and context, even as incredible new discoveries are made – a different loss than what Atherton saw, but similarly both intangible and deeply consequential. Being able to predict these consequences in advance, not mourning them as Luddites but actively considering how to help researchers overcome them, is a lesson we can learn from the SUPARS team.

Ingenious librarians

Rome Laboratory established in 1942 (Rome Air Development Center until 1991) is the US "Air Force 'superlab' for command, control, and communications" research and development and is responsible for planning and executing the USAF science and technology program. In October 1997 the R&D lab became part of the Air Force Research Laboratory. Some of the technology developed here gradually leaked out into the consumer world.

Monique Corzilius Luiz (The Daisy Girl) had also done a Susan Spotless ad around the same time as the 1964 Daisy ad.

Found at Univ of Chicago Press - Seeing Green

For anyone not familiar, she was featured in an advert for Lyndon B. Johnson's 1964 campaign against Barry Goldwater...known as Daisy ("Daisy Girl" or "Peace, Little Girl") which showed a young girl counting daisy petals, from one to ten. Immediately following this scene, a voiceover counted down from ten to one. The child's face was shown as a still photograph followed by images of nuclear explosions and mushroom clouds.

The same year, "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (1964).

In his unsuccessful 1996 presidential campaign, Republican nominee Bob Dole used a short clip of "Daisy" in his "The Threat" commercial; with a voice-over emphatically states "Thirty years ago, the biggest threat to her [the 'Daisy' girl] was nuclear war. Today, the threat is drugs."

Ironically, in 2016, Hillary Clinton recruited Monique Luiz to participate in a sequel of the ad used in her unsuccessful campaign against Donald Trump. In the ad Monique said, "The fear of nuclear war that we had as children, I never thought our children would ever have to deal with that again. And to see that coming forward in this election is really scary."

June 12, 1958, Arthur Hailey's Air Force One thriller "Course for Collision" aired as the final live episode of NBC's MATINEE THEATER. The premise of AF1 nearly colliding with a Soviet bomber in the near future of 1968 was controversial.

Matinee Theater was an American anthology series that aired on NBC during the Golden Age of Television, from October 31, 1955, to June 27, 1958. Its name is often seen as Matinee Theatre and the series had many notable guest stars.

“We are aberrations—beings born undead, neither one thing nor another, or two things at once … uncanny things that have nothing to do with the rest of creation, horrors that poison the world by sowing our madness everywhere we go, glutting daylight and darkness with incorporeal obscenities. From across an immeasurable divide, we brought the supernatural into all that is manifest. Like a faint haze it floats around us. We keep company with ghosts. Their graves are marked in our minds, and they will never be disinterred from the cemeteries of our remembrance. Our heartbeats are numbered, our steps counted. Even as we survive and reproduce, we know ourselves to be dying in a dark corner of infinity. Wherever we go, we know not what expects our arrival but only that it is there.”

“The major part of our species seems able to undergo any trauma without significantly re-examining its household mantras, including “everything happens for a reason,” “the show must go on,” “accept the things you cannot change,” and any other adage that gets people to keep their chins up.”

Them! is based on a story by American screenwriter George Worthing Yates. The story was made into a screenplay by Ted Sherdeman and Russell Hughes. Them! is credited with being one of the first "nuclear monster" films and the first "big bug" film, spawning a host of movies in the 1950s about bugs, spiders, and other creepy crawlers, (aside from Godzilla) most often the result of radiation from atomic testing.

Included among the American Film Institute's 2001 list of 400 movies nominated for the top 100 Most Heart-Pounding American Movies.

The flamethrowers used in the movie were standard World War II weapons and were loaned by the U.S. Army. The actors handling the weapons were World War II combat veterans, who had used them in battle.

The Trinity nuclear weapon test conducted in total secrecy on July 16, 1945, about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, did more than unleash the power of the atom. It opened a portal to hell and unleashed "THEM!" You think I'm joking...

June 18, 1983, NASA Astronaut Sally Ride [May 26, 1951 – July 23, 2012] became the first American woman in space and the youngest American astronaut to have flown in space, at the age of 32. She died of pancreatic cancer and her obituary publicly revealed for the first time that Tam Elizabeth O'Shaughnessy had been her partner of 27 years...which made Ride the first known LGBT astronaut. Two years ago, The Guardian revisited the case and talked to the Rosenberg’s children, Michael and Robert Meeropol (now 80 and 76, respectively), about their long quest to officially exonerate their mother.

RE: Meme Scholar with Madness (PhD) - EndtheMadnessNow - 06-21-2023

Today is summer blockbuster Batphone day, err Red Phone, err Hotline Day.

June 20, 1963: the "memorandum of understanding" that established the "Hot Line" was signed by U.S. representative Charles C. Stelle (L) and his USSR counterpart M. Tsarapkin ® in Geneva. The Hotline quickly established a footprint in popular culture.

This Washington-Moscow Hotline became operational on August 30, 1963 and served as one of the most famous top level communications systems in modern history. In popular culture, the Washington-Moscow Hotline is often called the Red Phone, and therefore many people think it's a telephone line, with a red phone set on the president's desk. However, this is false: the Hotline was never a phone line, but instead set up as a teletype connection, which in 1988 was replaced by facsimile units. Since 2008 the Hotline is a highly 'secure' computer link over which messages are exchanged by e-mail.

On July 13, 1963, only a month after signing the agreement, the United States sent four sets of teleprinters with Latin alphabet to Moscow for their terminal. This was done via US ambassador Averell Harriman's plane (son of railroad baron E. H. Harriman). Another month later, on August 20, the Soviet equipment, four sets of teleprinters with Cyrillic alphabet, arrived in Washington. The cipher machines for encrypting the Hot Line messages came from Norway. According to the agreement, all these machines should be accompanied by a one years supply of spare parts and all the necessary special tools, test equipment, operating instructions and other technical literature.

News report of the Russian teleprinters being installed at the Pentagon:

On August 30, 1963, Skynet went active, err I mean the Hotline transmitted the first test messages. Washington sent Moscow the text The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back 1234567890, which is a so called pangram of all letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet. The Soviets sent back a poetic description of Moscow's setting sun.

When the Hotline was established in 1963, it was a full-duplex teletype channel, which was routed through telephone cables from Washington, across the undersea Transatlantic Cable No. 1, to London, and from there to Copenhagen, over Stockholm and Helsinki to Moscow. In London, the Washington-Moscow Hotline cables were connected by a secure telephone exchange, situated in a huge underground tunnel complex, The Kingsway Tunnels, built during World War II.

In Moscow, the terminal of the Hotline was supposed to be in the Kremlin, somewhere next to the office of the prime minister. However, Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev once told a group of Moscow-based American journalists, that their terminal was on the opposite side of Red Square, in the Communist Party headquarters. The Russian terminal was manned by civilians, the American one by the military.

On the American side, there are Hotline terminals at these four locations:

  1. The National Military Command Center (NMCC) in the Pentagon
  2. The Alternate National Military Command Center (ANMCC) in the Raven Rock Mountain
  3. The military communications center in the White House
  4. An unknown location in the State Department (probably on the 7th floor in Hillary's wunderland bathroom)

The primary US terminal is at the National Military Command Center (NMCC) in the basement of the Pentagon. There, the Direct Communications Link is a joint staff operation under the control of the Joint Chiefs of Staff J-3 Operations Directorate. The NMCC is responsible for routine testing of the Hotline and for the receipt, transmission and translation of the messages by highly qualified translators.

The terminal is manned by six teams of two man each rule, working in 8-hour shifts and led by a commissioned officer acting as Presidential Translator (PT). For the routine shift operations, the Hotline personnel falls under the command of the flag officer in charge of the NMCC. But when a real message from Moscow arrives, the doors of the terminal room are closed and locked and the personnel becomes subject directly to the president himself.

The nosy, Brits of course felt left out and wanted in on the Hotline:

Quote:The establishment of a direct link between Washington and Moscow caused some diplomatic upheaval in western nations, specifically the United Kingdom. Since the physical line between the two capitals ran through London, the British proposed that they be allowed access to any conversation taking place on it. They could then consult with Washington, instead of being informed of disagreements after they had been settled. While this would have gone a long way towards strengthening the special relationship that exists between London and Washington, the administration of President Kennedy believed that a three-way conversation in times of crisis might be counter-productive. It was also obvious that if London were given access to the hotline, other NATO member nations would want the same thing. The tension that arose was abated, however, when both the Soviets and the Americans made it clear that the line was only to be used in the event of an emergency where the failure to communicate directly might lead to an all-out war. It would not be used for situations that called for regular diplomatic channels.
Matt's Blog

1963: Establishment of a land line teletype link between the Kremlin and the Pentagon
1967: Ancillary terminal installed at the White House.
1978: The land line replaced by a satellite link.
1980: Old teletype and encryption machines replaced by newer ones.
1988: Teletype equipment replaced by facsimile units.
199?: Further modernizations
2008: E-mail capability established

The Washington-Moscow Hotline is often called the Red Phone, because many people think it's a phone line with a red handset on each side. This was never the case.

Also president Obama used the popular myth of the red phone, when at a joint press conference in June 2010, he joked about how social media might help to move past the traditional Cold War communications. Speaking of the Russian president Medvedev starting a Twitter account, Obama said: "I have one, as well, so we may be able to finally throw away those red phones that have been sitting around for so long".

The United States first official use of the "hotline" was on November 22, 1963, after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The Soviet Union’s first official message was sent on June 5, 1967, following the start of the Six-Day War between Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and Syria.

On October 31, 2016, President Obama used it to warn President Putin to stop interfering in the US presidential election: “International law, including the law for armed conflict, applies to actions in cyberspace. We will hold Russia to those standards.” Seems Obama violated hotline protocol, but the night before they probably amended the Hotline usage protocol.

In 2021 Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs commemorated the anniversary with a tweet (although its graphic misstated the year the "hotline" was converted into an email platform). This year, so far, it has been silent...

Quote:During World War II, troop trains stopped in Reno and many a serviceman was introduced to legalized gambling.

After the war, the Smith family started the first nationwide advertising campaign for Nevada gambling. Signs sprung up along major highways, proclaiming "Harold's Club Or Bust," or "You May Lose Your Pants But You Will Have a Barrel of Fun, Harold's Club."

The casino was sold in June 1970 to Howard Hughes, who dropped the apostrophe from the name. "It went down hill then," said Powers. Winnings from Harolds, he said, were siphoned off to help the other Hughes casinos in Las Vegas.

Harolds Club in Reno went 'Bust' after a demolition party in Dec 1999 that ended the family fun.

Probably acoustic sensors that listen for TransAtlantic cable snoopers/cutters.

But, but, what about that knocking they heard?

I met to post the below today, but got entangled with the Titanic.

June 22, 1941: Three million German troops invaded Russia, launching Operation Barbarossa. Mobile killing units began the mass murder of Soviet Jews. German military policies led to the deaths of millions of Soviet POWs and civilians. It was the largest land offensive in human history, with over 10 million combatants taking part lasting 6 months, 2 weeks and 2 days. The operation, code-named after Frederick Barbarossa ("red beard"), a 12th-century Holy Roman emperor and German king, put into action Nazi Germany's ideological goal of conquering the western Soviet Union to repopulate it with Germans.

The German map is to be expected. You show a German a map of the Ukraine, and they have flashbacks to Operation Barbarossa and start fantasizing about how to invade it. LOL.
This is why Putin's codename in German is "Einkesselungmeister" (containment master).

June 22, 1942: The Pledge of Allegiance is formally adopted by US Congress.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

12 years later "under God" was added on June 14, 1954 by Pres Eisenhower.

Removal of the Bellamy salute occurred on December 22, 1942, when Congress amended the Flag Code language first passed into law on June 22, 1942.

What event happened between the time that the top (2) photograph's was taken and the bottom one? Are you sure that you were told the truth about the "facts" surrounding that event? How do you know? What would it be like if that event turned out differently?

June 22, 1973: Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev signed the Agreement on the Prevention of Nuclear War, committing to "refrain from the threat or use of force" against each other, allies, and other states "in circumstances which may endanger international peace and security."

Quote:Town Car Diplomacy

Brezhnev wanted to go for a ride.

Nixon recorded the scene in his Memoirs:

He got behind the wheel and motioned me into the passenger seat. The head of my Secret Service detail went pale as I climbed in and we took off down one of the narrow roads that run around the perimeter of Camp David….

At one point there is a very steep slope with a sign at the top reading, ‘Slow, dangerous curve’….

Brezhnev was driving more than 50 miles an hour as we approached the slope. I reached over and said, ‘Slow down, slow down,’ but he paid no attention. When we reached the bottom there was a squeal of rubber as he slammed on the breaks and made the turn….

‘You are an excellent driver,’ I replied. ‘I would never have been able to make that turn at the speed at which we were traveling.’

Diplomacy is not always an easy art.

A film clip of the day’s events here shows Nixon presenting the car to Brezhnev as the two speed off.
I wonder how thoroughly the KGB swept it for bugs before letting Brezhnev use it.

A Memo PDF from the CIA's Western Hemisphere Chief stating Nixon authorized $10 million to prevent Chilean Marxist Salvador Allende from coming to power in 1970, or to unseat him at a later date if he won. The project was codenamed FUBELT. On 9/11/73 a military coup d'état commenced, and later that day Allende committed suicide in his office...And then the country got free helicopter rides courtesy of General Augusto Pinochet.

RE: Meme Scholar with Madness (PhD) - EndtheMadnessNow - 06-24-2023

June 23, 1943: Rep. (D-Kentucky) Andrew Jackson May (June 24, 1875 – Sept 6, 1959) bragged to reporters that the Japanese were setting depth charges too shallow because they didn't know how deep U.S. subs could dive. VADM Charles Lockwood said the revelation caused the Japanese to adjust, costing the Navy 10 subs and 800 sailors.

Assuming Lockwood was correct in his claim, Rep. May should of been tarred & feather, whipped, then forced to walk the plank with cinder blocks over the Mariana Trench.

However, in a 1945 letter to Congressman May, Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Commander in Chief of the United States Fleet wrote: "Everyone in general appreciates the superb job you have done for your country in connection with Army legislation, and Naval officers appreciate in particular the cooperation you have given the Navy."

May was convicted by a federal jury on July 3, 1947, on charges of accepting bribes to use his position as Chairman of the Military Affairs Committee to secure munitions contracts during the Second World War. Murray and Henry Garsson also received prison terms. May would appeal his verdict all the way up to Supreme Court which refused to hear his case. May was forced into prison at the age of 74 and served nine months in federal prison.

President Truman decided to grant May a full pardon in 1952.

Nothing has changed since...only got much, much worse.

"The mechanism used blocked brain centres to make its subjects incapable of feeling sympathy."

Quote:Russians test a gun that turns people into zombies

It's been widely speculated that the U.S. military has been developing weapons with the capacity to scramble brain activity and basically turn your mind into mush. If so, we might be seeing a new kind of arms race as a new report claims that the Russia government has been testing a gun that does exactly that.

The weapon in question uses electromagnetic technology, such as microwave beams, to disrupt the central nervous system. Indeed, previous research has shown that certain kinds of low-frequency radiation can cause "a sensation of buzzing, clicking or hissing in the head," according to a report by MSNBC. So along that line of logic, taking it up a few notches would lead to weapons that can potentially fry eyeballs, stop the heart from beating and even turn people into zombies.

Right now there's no indication that anyone's perfected anything close to an actual "zombie gun," although the Australian publication The Herald Sun reports that Russia's main man, President Vladimir Putin, plans to have them ready within a decade as a defensive measure against enemies of the state or unruly dissidents, such as protesters.

According to their report:

Quote:
Plans to introduce the super-weapons were announced by Russian defence minister Anatoly Serdyukov. While the technology has been around for some time, Mr. Tsyganok said the guns were recently tested for crowd control purposes.

“When it was used for dispersing a crowd and it was focused on a man, his body temperature went up immediately as if he was thrown into a hot frying pan," Mr Tsyganok said. "Still, we know very little about this weapon and even special forces guys can hardly cope with it,'' he said.

But the effort to come up with something that can enable bona fide mind control has proven immensely challenging, despite decades of work by some of the brightest mad scientists. For instance, while the U.S. military has harnessed similar technology to produce a heat ray that creates a burning sensation hot enough to break up crowds, it still takes hours to power up and is a lot less effective when it rains.

MSNBC's science editor Alan Boyle says he's skeptical of Russia's claims and that we probably shouldn't expect a brain-frying gun for a very long time:

Quote:The bottom line is that Russia certainly seems to be on track to set up its own DARPA-like "Department of Mad Scientists,"working on heat rays, mind-altering electromagnetic beams and heaven knows what else. But there's nothing in the comments from Putin and Serdyukov to suggest that the Russians are anywhere close to having psychotronic weapons. In fact, Putin makes it sound as if the next frontier in warfare won't be the zombie ray gun but the coordinated cyber-attack. And that's scary enough for me.

On July 8, 1947, then-colonel Blanchard issued an official Army Air Force press release stating that the base intelligence office had recovered a so-called "flying disc" or "flying saucer" from a nearby ranch, it had been found "sometime last week," and they were flying it to "higher headquarters". The press release and the media feeding frenzy that followed it triggered the so-called Roswell UFO incident.
