@A51Watcher2 - Hawaii (Oahu) is where I met my wife, a Canadian, in the Honolulu airport bar. I spent 11 hours with her at the airport while she was waiting for a standby flight back to British Columbia. I got marked down as AWOL, my ass reamed, nearly put on hard labor duty, but after telling my story (actual truth mind you) to my chief he said Ok, that one is original and you're granted a free pass for this time only! My nickname onboard was "Lucky" and I always somehow managed to live up to it.
Myself and a few sailor buds were judges at Waikiki beach swimsuit competition, every Sunday afternoon. Free beer & rum, surf & sun, & plenty of college girls...them were the days! I was so freakin dark tanned I blended in with the locals. My wife worked at Denny's right around the corner. She was the only female who worked the night shift, the others were all muscle bound beach blond males. At first I had a slight issue with that, until I learned they were all gay.

I do miss Hawaii. I was offered a tech job with the FAA at Diamond Head before I was even officially out of the Navy. Plus I had a fantastic Hawaiian landlord that kept my apartment rent fee low. However, 18 months earlier my wife had developed serious allergy/asthma issues...yep allergic to paradise!! WTF??!! C'mon, why me? Doctors said no drugs, vax, or therapy would suffice (and we seen every specialist on the island) all recommended she had to leave tropical paradise. Landed in Oregon at the onset of winter and I spent 2 years in deep depression (brah, where is the sun?!), meanwhile her ailments disappeared. San Diego area was an option but the cost of living was a definite No can do.
