The Air Force’s new T-7 Red Hawk training jet flew for the first time Wednesday in St. Louis, Missouri, the company said in a release.
Its flight marks the beginning of the T-7′s final development phase before Boeing starts producing military-ready jets. Red Hawks will replace the Air Force’s six-decade-old T-38 Talon trainers as the main platform that prepares American and foreign pilots to fly fighter and bomber aircraft.
Over the course of the hour-long trip from St. Louis Lambert International Airport, Maj. Bryce Turner, a test pilot with the 416th Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base in California, and Steve Schmidt, Boeing’s chief T-7 test pilot, gauged how smoothly the plane maneuvered and tested secondary systems like the auxiliary power supply, Boeing spokesperson Randy Jackson said.
The pair vetted how well the plane handled positive and negative g forces, as a pilot experiences when accelerating or flying upside down, and practiced in high-altitude airspace, Jackson said.
“The stable performance of the aircraft and its advanced cockpit and systems are game-changers for U.S. Air Force student pilots and instructors alike,” Turner said in the release.
As the first Air Force training jet designed in the 21st century, the T-7 offers students a digital cockpit, more realistic simulators and software that can be updated as real-world threats evolve.
The airframe that flew Wednesday is one of five test aircraft that will be delivered to the Air Force before it starts receiving fully finished jets at its schoolhouses. The Air Force plans to buy 351 Red Hawks starting in December 2025 under a $9.2 billion contract awarded in 2018.
But design problems with the escape system and ejection seat have set the production timeline back by multiple years.
Air Force officials now plan to decide in early 2025 whether to begin building operational jets, meaning the service would start receiving aircraft two years later than originally intended.
Some problems stem from an effort to make the jet more accessible to pilots of any race or sex. Earlier airframes were primarily designed to accommodate men based on body measurements from decades-old military studies. That means many women’s torsos or arms are too short to safely operate the jets or to eject.
The Air Force has said that testing showed T-7 pilots could be at high risk for concussions, unsafely speeding up when their parachutes open, or losing their visor. Further tests earlier this year aimed to resolve those concerns.
Jackson said a successful high-speed test in February laid the groundwork for future rounds to ensure the escape system is safe, but did not say whether specific issues remain.
Boeing claimed in the release that the T-7′s cockpit egress system is the “safest of any trainer.”
“This first flight with the Air Force represents our team’s commitment to delivering a new level of safety and training for fighter and bomber pilots,” said Evelyn Moore, Boeing’s T-7 program manager, in the release. “We remain focused on engineering ways to better prepare warfighters for changing mission demands and emerging threats.”
Meanwhile, T-38 maintenance issues have slowed the training pipeline amid a longstanding fighter pilot shortage.
Air Force Times reported in March that a private contractor’s delays in restoring the T-38′s J85 engines threatened to slow pilot production for at least another six months. The engine enterprise may not fully recover until April 2024, despite improvements in the supply of spare parts and repair rates, the service said.
“It’s an old engine. … There’s a lot of moving parts,” Air Education and Training Command boss Lt. Gen. Brian Robinson said Feb. 16. “But as a customer, I just want to produce pilots.”

Meyer's 98-year-old mother — Record co-owner Joan Meyer, who lived in the home with her son — collapsed and died Saturday, Meyer said, blaming her death on the stress of the raid of her home.

Meyer said he believes the raid was prompted by a story published last week about a local restaurant owner, Kari Newell. Newell had police remove Meyer and a newspaper reporter from her restaurant early this month, who were there to cover a public reception for U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner, a Republican representing the area.

The next week at a city council meeting, Newell publicly accused the newspaper of using illegal means to get information on the status of her driver's license following a 2008 drunken driving conviction and other driving violations. The newspaper countered that it received that information unsolicited, which it verified through public online records. It eventually decided not to run a story, because it wasn’t sure the source who supplied it had obtained it legally. But the newspaper did run a story on the city council meeting, in which Newell herself confirmed she'd had a DUI conviction and that she had continued to drive even after her license was suspended.

. . . A two-page search warrant, signed by a local judge, lists Newell as the victim of alleged crimes by the newspaper. When the newspaper asked for a copy of the probable cause affidavit required by law to issue a search warrant, the district court issued a signed statement saying no such affidavit was on file, the Record reported.

Newell declined to comment Sunday, saying she was too busy to speak. She said she would call back later Sunday to answer questions.

Cody, the police chief, defended the raid on Sunday, saying in an email to The Associated Press that while federal law usually requires a subpoena — not just a search warrant — to raid a newsroom, there is an exception “when there is reason to believe the journalist is taking part in the underlying wrongdoing.”

So I had another dream about aliens. I don't remember a thing I just know it was grey aliens and they were complaining about me    I woke up much later than usual , more than an 1.5 hour later and still felt groggy and like I could have slept longer.

I don't think it's more than just a dream, but from what I remember, everytime I dream about aliens I wake up much later than usual .

I think so called abductions are nothing but vivid dreams , perhaps dreams in another dimension that some of us are able to do?

Remember the methane plumes that have been detected seasonally on Mars?? If life got a start then as the water went underground (supposedly big underground lakes have been detected) I would assume any bugs/bacteria went with the water...

Mars may be a dry and barren wasteland now, but new evidence has emerged that this wasn't always the way – and, moreover, that climate conditions changed, perhaps seasonally, in a way that may have been conducive to the emergence of life.
A pattern of hexagons at Gale Crater hints at a history of repeated cycle of wet and dry conditions, allowing minerals to dry out between wet spells to create the specific formations that have since fossilized into rock.

"We observe exhumed centimetric polygonal ridges with sulfate enrichments, joined at Y-junctions, that record cracks formed in fresh mud owing to repeated wet-dry cycles of regular intensity," writes a team led by geochemist William Rapin of Paul Sabatier University in France.

"Instead of sporadic hydrological activity induced by impacts or volcanoes, our findings point to a sustained, cyclic, possibly seasonal, climate on early Mars."

The implications of this go beyond a more Earth-like climate. They add more weight to the pile of evidence that conditions on early Mars were conducive to the emergence of biochemistry – the molecular foundations of life.

Because the surface of Mars hasn't been renewed by tectonic activity, it retains a pretty comprehensive geologic record of Mars' history, dating back as far as 4.3 billion years. In this record we've found ample evidence of a soggy past, of lakes and rivers and oceans that shimmered across the Martian surface eons ago.

The hydroclimate of early Mars is a little trickier to piece together. But Rapin and his team have shown that it's possible if you know how to look. On the floor of Gale Crater, where the Curiosity rover explores, they found a series of well-preserved hexagonal patterns in sedimentary rock, rich in salts of calcium and magnesium, dating back to around 3.6 to 3.8 billion years ago, straddling two time periods known as the Noachian and the Hesperian.

We know, based on what we see here on Earth, the kinds of processes that can produce these patterns in a dry basin. And the researchers, after studying the options, concluded that the most likely explanation is wet mud drying.

And not just drying once, either. Wet mud that dries once cracks in T-shaped intersections. It's maturation over repeated drying cycles that produces the Y-shaped crack intersections, resulting in a hexagonal pattern.

The salts in the patterned rock are at a much higher concentration than the host bedrock, too, suggesting that the salts were deposited there – likely by saline water permeating the mud, then evaporating and leaving the salt behind.

Finally, the thickness of the patterned rock suggests that regular wet-dry conditions persisted on Mars for a long time – thousands to perhaps millions of years.

We have, as yet, no evidence of microbial life on Mars, but these cyclic conditions would have been favorable for the organization of organic molecules into complex compounds. We know there are organic molecules on Mars, and that they're likely widespread. Weather cycles are another piece of the habitability puzzle.

"The addition of direct evidence for a series of repeated wet-dry cycles presented here supports the conclusion that conditions in ancient Gale Crater were conducive to prebiotic polymerization processes," the researchers write.

"Our findings suggest that the Noachian-Hesperian transition period could have been favorable for the emergence of life – possibly more so than the earlier Noachian eon, with its potential for perennially wet surface environment."
The research has been published in Nature.

India's space agency has released the first images of the Moon taken by the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, which entered lunar orbit on Saturday.
The images show craters on lunar surface getting larger and larger as the spacecraft draws closer.
Chandrayaan-3's lander and rover are due to reach the surface on 23 August.
If successful, India will be the first country to perform a controlled "soft landing" near the south pole.
It will also become only the fourth to achieve a soft landing on the Moon after the US, the former Soviet Union and China.

My personal project since about 2020 has been to transfer to print publication (on the theory that print might last longer than the internet) as much as possible of the material that I've been publishing on ATS. I've been discussing it from time to time on the other site.

The first step was made last year, when Advantage published "Silence in Heaven" and "The Unseen Husband", covering Revelation and the Song of Solomon.

There are now new developments in this important venture (I think it's an important venture, anyway).

I went to the London Book Fair earlier this year, which was something of a damp squib for me since I did not realise the need to make advance appointments to meet people. But when i first told them of my plans to go, Advantage offered to publish one more book for me free of charge, so I'm taking them up on that offer with respect to a book on Daniel.

And since then I've been in touch with Austin Macauley, who are taking on Prophets, Priests, and Politics, to be published next year. They are "hybrid publishers", and I'm still in the world of self-publishing for this book anyway, but at least they should be doing some marketing, as compared with Advantage who leave me to my own devices. They ask for "first refusal" on my next book, and if all goes well I could ask them to take on "Christ died for the ungodly", which is the most important manuscript I've got.


But there at at least a dozen in the full set, and I'm by now "an old man in a hurry" (which historians will recognise as Lord Randolph Churchill's description of Gladstone). There's still a long way to go.

Large’ creature — with 20 arms — found lurking in Antarctic sea. 

So, we've found a new species swimming around that is a around near the Antarctic. A strawberry shaped squid looking creature with 20 arms.

"Researchers trawled the Southern Ocean on several research expeditions between 2008 and 2017, according to a study published July 14 in the journal Invertebrate Systematics. They were searching for a group of “cryptic” sea animals known as Promachocrinus, or Antarctic feather stars.

Antarctic feather stars are “large” animals that can live anywhere from about 65 feet to about 6,500 feet underwater and have an “otherworldly appearance” when swimming, researchers said. Although both are invertebrate ocean animals, feather stars are distinct from more well-known sea star"s."

The Antarctic strawberry feather star was found throughout the Southern Ocean from depths ranging from about 215 feet to about 3,840 feet, researchers said.

The new species was identified based on its body shape and DNA analysis, the study said.

The research team included Emily McLaughlin, Nerida Wilson and Greg Rouse. Researchers also documented several other species of Anatarctic feather star, including three more new species.

Pretty neat, IMO. A new deep water species classified lurking around near the southern Indian ocean area.
