I dunno. I believe Erlich is correct. While we will never accumulate enough human biomass to destroy the planet itself, we are certainly capable of destroying ourselves - an "eat ourselves out of house and home" sort of thing. The planet, and nature, will of course go on, all the happier that we are not constantly tearing at it's skin any more. The world WAS before us, and will merrily roll right along after us.
Nature has ways of handling over-populating organisms, which usually involves a population collapse back down to manageable levels - but during that collapse, life gets mighty rough for the individuals going through it... which is also Nature's way of strengthening the remnant population.
It "weeds out" the useless eaters and individual organisms that are too dumb to live.
While Erlich says we would need "five more earths" to maintain the current lifestyle for everyone on Earth currently, I think he hasn't factored everything in - not everyone lives the same First World lifestyle. I think, right now, we could maintain what we have with a mere 2 to 3 more earths... but they can't be found anywhere within reach, so that point is really moot.
Musk and Peterson (together with the WEF) are infamous for promoting continued and accelerating human over-population. I think they believe we need more serfs and more people to create more brains to come up with innovations, but when they allow the population to increase to the point of collapse, where we are now, that point, too, becomes moot as their cultivated masses fall over and die anyhow those carefully cultivated masses and minds fall over an die in the collapse as well.
When you are running a herd - of cattle, of sheep, of anything - you cannot allow the herd to get out of hand, or you run the risk of not being able to feed them all during hard times. Humans are not so very different in that respect. They, and the WEF, want to overpopulate the planet with humans, but will not be able to feed them all past a certain point. I think they may be coming to realize we are at that point, and that is the reason they are driving eating bugs and "manufactured" meat so hard currently. It will not be enough. While they are feeding us bugs, and lab-grown meat, and soybeans disguised as meat (soybeans are for cattle, not humans), you can bet your ass they will be living on real steak and real potatoes.
Substitutes are only for the serfs.
Additionally, a great number of the minds they have cultivated for "innovations" are nothing of the sort - they are simple collectivist enforcers, enforcing the rules handed down from on high - they are promoting the "cancel culture" rather than any real innovations. Those people are the expendables - to both normal humans AND the Elites. They will be among the first to go in the Great Culling, as they are among the "too dumb to live" faction. Their only function in this world is to act as enforcers for the Elites, and to eat the rest of us out of house and home.
They are "too dumb to live" because they are not bright enough to recognize their precarious position, no matter which direction they turn. Survivors will kill them off, and their Elite Masters will just keep throwing them at the malcontents to be killed off, until they are no more. Then the population will be reduced, and the herd strengthened... the only thing left to determine is how many of them will be eaten as steak by their Masters, and how long the masters will survive after the culling, when the survivors tell them to fuck off and find their own tucker.
The Masters are just not set up to find their own tucker without serfs to find it for them.
