I have stood upon the cliff overlooking the Pacific where Japanese women, kids, and a few remaining soldiers jumped to their death rather surrender to U.S. forces as Guam was being retaken.

If you understand what the Japanese had been told about America and American soldiers then you might understand the "WHY" of their actions.

Polar opposites of how Japanese POWs were treated verses American POWs.. One things that helped immensely after Japan's surrendered was the word of mouth the returning Japanese prisoners revealed  about their treatment by the Yanks.

Ukraine is using the same humane treatment of Russian POWs as a calling card to get Russian soldiers to defect and surrender instead of die for the motherland.
