It's my understanding that the ghost in the machine is to be the general, but the robots are to be the grunts - how else are they gonna get those AI-piloted drones fueled up to chuck missiles at humans?
So it's the robots directed by AI that are supposed to be the weak links in the chain of command. Take those robots out, and all AI can do is cut off your electricity and muck up the supply chain so that you can't get gas to move south to warmer climates. And, if you aren't growing your own food, then that supply chain can be cut off from you by AI, too. That's a hint to urban denizens that they might want to rethink their positions.
I don't like cities, obviously. They remind me of an old drill sergeant that used to say "Spread out - one grenade get you all!".
