Science Professor Fired For Teaching X And Y Chromosomes - Infolurker - 06-28-2023

Oh, too good not to share Clownworld news.

In today's "Asylum News" we have a Professor fired for teaching that X and Y Chromosomes determine an organism's biological sex. Appears some students got offended and complained that this is not correct.

Texas Prof. Fired for Teaching X,Y Chromosomes Dictate Sex

Four students reportedly walked out of the professor's class when he stated that sex was determined by X and Y chromosomes

Quote:"When teaching the human reproductive system, Dr. Varkey also stated that human sex is determined by chromosomes X and Y, and that reproduction must occur between a male and a female to continue the human species," First Liberty stated in its letter. "In the course of teaching Human Anatomy and Physiology, he made these statements in every class for 20 years, without any incident or complaint."

A Texas community college fired one of its biology professors for teaching his students that sex was determined by X and Y chromosomes, according to a new report.

On November 28, 2022, four of Varkey's students walked out of his class when he stated that sex was determined by X and Y chromosomes, just as he had dozens of times before.

As an adjunct professor, Varkey taught Human Anatomy and Physiology at St. Philip’s College to more than 1,500 students for 22 years, where he taught the same principles he was fired for this year

Quote:A biology professor at a Texas community college has claimed he was fired for “religious preaching” after he taught a lesson about how sex is determined by X and Y chromosomes.

Johnson Varkey, who has taught at St. Philip’s College in San Antonio for 20 years, claimed he was accused of “religious preaching” and let go after he discussed the human reproductive system during a lesson on Nov. 28, 2022, which led to four students walking out of the lecture hall.

“The college fired him for teaching basic and widely accepted concepts of biology. We’re asking the college to immediately reinstate Dr. Varkey to his position and clear his record of any wrongdoing,”

Varkey, an adjunct professor, has taught human anatomy and physiology to more than 1,500 students since 2003, according to First Liberty.

“During Dr. Varkey’s 20-year employment as a biology professor at St. Philip’s College, he consistently received exemplary performance reviews and was never subject to discipline. Throughout that time, he never discussed with any student his personal views — religious or otherwise — on human gender or sexuality,” it said.

This is the real issue  Cool

On researching this, it seems there was more to the story than just x and y.

Unfortunately none of the articles seemed to want to look past the claim that he was fired for teaching x and y, while the school is saying that he was proselytizing and going outside of the schools purview.

So much for "follow the science" I reckon. It appears that science doesn't count if it goes against the opinions of certain "protected groups"... but it's good to see that Christians finally have the inside track on science!

Back in the day, they called the temple acolytes "priests" and "high priests", and "priestesses" and "high priestesses", and they magically found opinions that supported to preferred narrative of the kings.

Now "scientists" have filled that niche in the modern world - Scientists, the High Priests of Woke Religion!

What used to be science is now passe - it dealt in facts, rather than opinions, and facts have fallen out of favor in Woke World, so scientists have had to adjust, adapt, and overcome - at least their grants will still come rolling in, so long as they've got their minds right!

If not, it's the unemployment line for them!

He needs to sue for wrongful termination. This is outragious!

So they fired him for teaching nature, an attribute of any deity who is blamed for creating the world?
Or maybe Darwin is on trial here?

Strange that major religions and science don't come out to counter these asinine beliefs that human
evolution has suddenly decided to produce multiple genders or God keeps screwing-up and putting
souls in the wrong bodies!
Surprised

All evidence points to Dr. Varkey preaching to the students and we all know southern Christian religious values now don't we, such as restricting women from becoming pastors. Dr. Varkey loves to preach just look up the doctor on youtube Int'l Bible College and watch the doctor do his thing.

And once again the right spins the spin and loses their minds.

These religious people are hypocrites...they say 'the only way to unity is to love diversity' then they do the complete opposite. As for their reasons why women can't be pastors, it is in a passage of the Bible where women shall not adorn themselves etc. Well the Christian women adorn themselves, so they pick and choose their interpretations. Shameful.

Oh my.

So I guess we are in agreement that X and Y determine the sex of the individual, correct?

And all the hate towards the prof was because he was religious, amirite?

You won't get any argument from me if we're talking an 8th grade level of basic understanding.

In humans there are 6 common sex karyotypes: XX, XY, XXY, XXXY, & XYYY. & there are 4 rare sex karyotypes: XO, XO/XX mosaicism, XY/XXY mosacism, XXY/XXXY/XXXXY mosaicism.

In most cases, the sex of an individual is determined at birth by visual examination of the genitalia, not by karyotype testing.

Sex is also determined by the production of or the potential to produce small gametes (sperm) or large gametes (eggs).

In cases of CAIS (complete androgen insensitivity syndrome) and many with 5-alpha reductase deficiency are born with genitalia that appears female although with XY chromosomes. These (intersex) conditions are not usually discovered until puberty.

At first, I was curious as to what we were defining as "common" - 1 in 2? 1 in 5? 1 in 10? 1 in 100? One branch of my family tree had a history of intersex up to around the turn of the 19th to 20th century, when it seems to have bred itself out. Since genetics was not a thing back then, there were no records of why, and I was curious. So I looked it up, and found this:

Quote:NUMERIC ABNORMALITIES (ANEUPLOIDIES)

Aneuploidies are abnormalities affecting the number of chromosomes. The most common sex chromosome aneuploidies are 45,X (Turner syndrome); 47,XXY (Klinefelter syndrome); 47,XYY (XYY syndrome); and 47,XXX, which have birth frequencies of approximately 1 in 2500, 1 in 500 to 1 in 1000, 1 in 850 to 1 in 3000, and 1 in 1000, respectively

So in a room of 100 people, you've only got a 10% to 20% chance of finding even one of the most common of those, which is 47, XXY at 1 in 500 to 1 in 1000.

But how do those combinations affect "sex", as in the sex of an individual? Not to worry, I also found this explanation, the bottom line of which is:

Quote:In mammals, which includes humans, the Y chromosome carries a gene (SRY) that encodes a testes-determining factor. If an individual has a Y chromosome with a functional SRY gene, they will develop testes and therefore will be biologically male. Absent a Y chromosome and functional SRY gene (unless the SRY gene has been transposed to an X chromosome), an embryo will develop ovaries and will therefore be biologically female. What’s important to note is that the presence of a Y chromosome, or two, or three, etc., all result in the development of testes and therefore these individuals are biologically male. Likewise, individuals with additional or fewer X chromosomes, in the absence of a Y, all develop ovaries and are therefore biologically female.

With this in mind, the chart in the above tweet can more accurately be rewritten as:

    X – Female

    XX – Female

    XXY – Male

    XY – Male

    XYY – Male

    XXXY – Male

So no, these different chromosomal compositions are not new sexes, but rather represent natural variation within males and females. To illustrate by way of analogy, a person with Klinefelter syndrome (47, XXY) isn't a new sex in the same way that a person with Down's syndrome (who have 3 instead of 2 copies of chromosome 21) isn't a new species.

That article explains that biological "sex" is determined by the type of gametes an individual produces, or has the organs to produce, whether sperm or egg, rather than external genitalia, and that gamete production is governed by the SRY gene, usually found on the Y chromosome (but occasionally transposed to the X chromosome), rather than the chromosomes themselves.

Technically I reckon, it's really the type of sex organ - whether testes or ovaries - that an individual has, and it doesn't really matter if those testes, if present, are internal or external, or even whether or not they functionally produce gametes as far as sex determination goes.

FWIW, I never claimed there were more than two sexes. Hoomans are sexually dimorphic binary creatures classified in the sub-group of primates known as the Great Apes.
