So, I won't go into great detail on this one myself but there is rumblings of "an event" happening. Judgement? Rapture? Lots of theories but it appears there is an expectation of something coming. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, just search for the topic on youtube.

27 NBC troopers in OK are really not enough soldiers to spook me much. a callout of 27 vs. 330 million citizens seems a bit underwhelming.
I should probably point out, too, that the path of totality doesn't roll over Nineveh, VA. I don't know about the other Ninevehs mentioned, because they don't concern me at all since I'm in VA. It dies make me wonder why the guy tossed in Nineveh, VA - was it just because it has a Biblical-sounding name? If so, we've a lot of other towns with Biblical sounding names, too, none of which are going to get any totality. Nineveh MO, Nineveh PA, and Nineveh, NY are likewise not in the path of totality, either... but 3 out of 7 ain't bad, I reckon.
While mentioning totality, this eclipse is different from the 2017 eclipse. That one had a path of totality about 70 miles wide, whereas this one is nearly twice as large, with a path that is about 120 miles wide. Also, the 2017 eclipse was only annular at best, with a ring of sun showing around the moon at max totality, whereas this one will block more of the sun, and there is a suggestion that Bailey's Beads may be seen this time around.
Te duration of totality, if you are in the path of totality, is also going to be longer at about 4 minutes, 28 seconds. As I recall, the 2017 eclipse only had about a minute and a half of totality.
There is a certain class of superstitious folk who can be counted upon to "seek after signs" in the sky, it seems. Tecumseh, for example, used a prediction of an eclipse in the early 1800's to build a coalition of tribes, claiming that victory was nigh for them against the whites using that "sign". Unfortunately for him, he was killed - or at least last seen - as a result of that prediction in the War of 1812 in a battle in Canada. So, maybe for him, it WAS a sign of impending doom, even if only a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Regarding the advice to have two weeks supplies on hand, I personally think that is pretty good advice, even during those times when God is not smiting the sun by having a giant space-dragon gobble it up. I think you should ALWAYS have such supplies on hand, so by all means, if you don't have it now, get it as soon as you can. If it takes an eclipse to kick you into gear, then so be it.

There are a whole hell of a lot of people traveling to areas of totality to watch the eclipse and many small towns in the path will become overwhelmed with out of towners. That means the store shelves and gas pumps will be wiped out and the utilities (including wifi) will be overwhelmed as well- not to mention hometown people are likely to get a case of the ass with townies trespassing and acting like entitled jerks in general. It just makes a lot of sense for authorities to tell people to stock up and be prepared for anything. I think bringing in extra forces to keep people in line is a good idea too.
Personally we will get 97-98% coverage here so we wont be traveling but will make sure we have some extra supplies just to be on the safe side because people tend to act stupid during solar and lunar events. Hell, just watch the ERs fill up and listen to the police scanner on a full moon if you doubt it!

We traveled last fall for the Eclipse that hit the southwest. Turned it into a nice road trip. The town we stayed in (Richfield Utah) did the same thing and planned for the worst. Much ado about nothing. We had fun though!

As I'm close to the 100% coverage of the eclipse area in Texas all I can say is that day will be interesting. I'm stocked up to stay home for a number of days if the expected 1 million visitors make a mess of things.

I'm going to start digging my stone-lined bunker first thing in the morning. I have 3 days and 7 hours or so to the totality of the eclipse. I think I can make it happen. I have two shovels, one for each hand. That means I can dig it twice as fast as a normal mortal.
