Rogue-nation attacked. What is going on? - BodhisattvaStyle - 11-06-2023

Rogue-nation was just hit with some sort of attack over the weekend. After logging in Saturday I started having problems with my phone. I've had to completely wipe and clean it.
Ats was attacked recently, as we all know.
Facebook was also attacked this weekend.

Are we under a full scale cyber attack? Is our information safe now, or have we been compromised? Is this our government, or a foreign enemy?

These are some questions that have come to my mind. I'm starting this thread so we can discuss what's been going on with these attacks.

I, myself, wondered if it was time to unplug for a while.

Can anyone explain what exactly happened here the last couple of days? Are we safe being on these sites anymore?

What say you?

Was on ATS, not on RN, hit and miss throughout the weekend.

Might hop on Discord later to see if there's chatter.

The Dark Funding is active. Political specifics and exposures will not be allowed.

Even sites considered to be "small potatoes" are not spared.

I say don't jump to conclusions or conspiracies.

The folks in charge here are very open and transparent about issues and I am sure will offer an explanation. Having been privy to some behind the scenes goings on when the old site was clobbered and knowing how much work went into getting this site up, I can tell you the powers that be here really care and work their asses off to keep the lights on and the fridge stocked.

No site on the Internet is safe.

Is they want your information they already have it.

I just figured it was a DDOS attack, possible not even aimed at RN but at the host site. I mean, all the "too big to fail" banks were FUBAR all weekend (may still be for all I know, I just woke up). We were warned there would be cyber attacks from Iran- I just happen to think they're coming from our own government and they're blaming the "other guys".

RE: Rogue-nation attacked. What is going on? - BodhisattvaStyle - 11-06-2023

RN,
I use cuttingedge.org for my daily news briefs. I have been looking at that site for a good long while. It has always run like clockwork. The site does not post news on Sundays (Christian news forum). But they didn't even post news Saturday this week, and all the articles posted today are articles from last week that have just been reposted.

This is not an isolated incident with just one site. I'm seeing several sites that have gone wonky very recently.
R3 was down as well. I just figured that it was the same MyBB server issues.

I don't believe in coincidences.....and especially when things start to fall like dominoes.
I may have my tinfoil hat on too tight, but something seems fishy with all of this happening in sequence.

RE: Rogue-nation attacked. What is going on? - Ninurta - 11-06-2023

I'm still in the dark as to what happened myself. I spent several hours in chat with the hosting provider last night, waiting for a response that never came. So, I went to bed. Got up 4 hours later, and it's working again. All I've gotten so far is an e-mail that says "the Site is responding again. please check", with still no explanation yet. I'm back on hat with them now, asked what happened, and am waiting on a response again.

and waiting...
and waiting...

So I've no idea what happened yet.

The initial outage was down to an "htaccess" file in the site that was blocking access and returning a database error, so the htaccess file was name-changed to stop interfering, but this outage was different in that the internet couldn't even find the site, so I'm still waiting to hear what the problem was. I even went so far as to check the domain registration with ICANN, and everything was good there, so I dunno yet.

The site is "safe", at least as safe as anywhere else on the internet. About all the can get here would be your registration e-mail address to spam it up, and I've not noticed mine getting spammed yet. You don't really leave any retrievable tracks here other than that, so You're still safe here. Just make sure you're using a different password here from your e-mail password, and you'll be fine.

Will update as/if I get more information.

ETA: The RN3 archive site was down at the same time, so it might have been the host under attack. That would also explain why they were too damned busy to talk.

Thank you!
So weird how the internet couldn't find the site at all. It was if it just disappeared. I'm not sure I've seen that before. I wasn't getting any error codes. It just never connected to the site. As if the entire "cord" had been cut.

Good point about the banks having issues as well. I noticed a lot of banks having late deposit problems over the weekend.

There's a server's place where one can check if there's a problem with a particular Hostek hosted website.
The address is: http://www.websitedown.info/
and if one types in the RN's URL (https://rogue-nation.com/) Check-Bar, it scans to see if the RN site is
working.

Usually when that happens it's one of two things: either the domain name expired without being renewed, or there is a problem with the DNS servers. It was not the domain names - I checked both of them at ICANN, and both are still good. That leaves a DNS problem or some other obscure thing.

With so many sites having trouble, I have to wonder if Iran hasn't been mucking around in the DNS servers, but that's just a stab in the dark.

Because I'm still in the dark.

Don't let it worry you, using terms like 'DNS server' and 'ICANN' leave me completely in the void,
but I'm grateful that you and others are here to help in such matters.

I didn't try to get on here over the weekend, but noticed some other websites running slowly. Even my cable TV was acting up. Not sure what is going on, but it seems to be attacking multiple sites.

Okay, now that you mentioned it, my satellite service was having issues as well this weekend. Especially Saturday night.

This may give someone some Insight. I looked into data breaches this year to see if I could pick up on any trends.
What I did find is the month of Sept saw the most cyber attacks.

https://www.itgovernance.co.uk/blog/list-of-data-breaches-and-cyber-attacks-in-2023

September saw the biggest data breach of the year by far, when the digital risk protection company DarkBeam exposed an astounding 3.8 billion records thanks to a misconfigured Elasticsearch and Kibana interface.

Elsewhere, the effects of the MOVEit Transfer breach are still being felt.

_________
https://www.reuters.com/technology/internet-companies-report-biggest-ever-denial-service-operation-2023-10-11/
WASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Internet companies Google, Amazon and Cloudflare say they have weathered the internet's largest-known denial of service attack and are sounding the alarm over a new technique they warn could easily cause widespread disruption.

Alphabet Inc-owned Google (GOOGL.O)said in a blog post published Tuesday that its cloud services had parried an avalanche of rogue traffic more than seven times the size of the previous record-breaking attack thwarted last year.
_______

Not sure if any of this helps, but from what I'm seeing there was a big rise in cyberattacks starting in September.

Ps. Discord is having issues as well. There's an ats post about it that just popped up on the feed.

https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/discord
Discord went "dark" Friday Nov 3rd for 50 mins.

Im a complete novice but I follow the Cloudflare site and always check there when service is spotty, nice overview. Lots of numbers and graphs I don't understand but there's enough that I do where you can spot something that's unusual. This weekend seemed to be a heavier flow, but with the instability throughout the world, it makes sense.

https://radar.cloudflare.com/

https://cybermap.kaspersky.com/stats#country=213&type=OAS&period=w

the wild part to me is not only do we have individuals and groups always probing our cyber security, but we no doubt have hostile governments and our own government sniffing around.

and none of it is really secure...

I meant safe from viruses or anything that looked our of the ordinary.
I take so many precautions it's ridiculous. My phone barely has any "permissions." I stay off of social media. I watch every word I type on this site (and ats when I was on it). After this happened yesterday and my phone started acting up. I am also tech illiterate when it comes to the inner workings of the internet/computer's. So, I rely on you all to keep me apprised of whether or not it is "safe from viruses or anything that might crash a phone or laptop. I knew there were other readers like me who may of been spooked by all of this, and not having a working understanding of it makes it harder to comprehend what has happened..

The internet has never been completely "safe." I'm asking mods here if the site itself has anything out of the ordinary that might harm its members equipment. What I read about ddos attacks is they usually hide a bigger attack within. I was hoping someone would really look into it and let us know if everything is copacetic or not.

RE: Rogue-nation attacked. What is going on? - NightskyeB4Dawn - 11-06-2023

When RN was down and I was checking with "Is It Down Right Now", I saw a lot of well known sites down at the same time. I don't remember then all but Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, Twitter, and Netflix were among the other sites down. they were only down for a short spell.

I was just beginning to think that we had gotten hit by the "Big One", but the big boys came back, so I figured, it had to either be a Beta test, or something else, not quite as serious.

I think that where Im coming from this was just an overabundance of the now normal phishing malware and ransomware we now face. That said all that's out there is an email address from this site, this isn't a bug thats gonna jump to your phone or laptop, this is just a high level of multiple kinds of attacks across the board, which slows down the internet access no more no less

Go look at the links because yes internet service was degraded over the weekend, but it wasn't an independent attack on Rogue Nation or ATS

My bad!

"DNS" is "Domain Name Server". It's the system that translates the name made of letters (rogue-nation.com") to a series of numbers called an IP address that computers actually use to find sites on the internet It's usually what the government buggers up when they seize a domain, and if you already know the IP address, that can often be bypassed.

"ICANN" is the "Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers" They are the fine folks who keep track of your domain name, whether it's still alive, and what IP numbers it is assigned to.

If either of those goes wonky, and your domain name either expires or is otherwise dissociated from it's IP address, then your computer can no longer use the domain name to find the IP address, and your browser reports back that the site "cannot be found".
